So yesterday I go over to east coast golf to hit a bucket of balls. I'm doing my warm-ups when I hear the guy next to me bragging about how great he hits his driver to the kid next to me. After he does that he can't help but mention how he paid $500 for it yet it had the wrong shaft so he had to spend another $150 to fix that. Am I alone in thinking he is an idiot, I mean I could hit my $79 nickent just as long and straight as he was hitting his driver (it had a taylor made headcover but who knows wtf it was). I just hope I don't get paired up with him during a round ever, I cant help but imagine how much he wasted on his irons...

Anyone else run into this sort of thing on the range or at the course?

Guess I don't understand, sounds like the guy was happy he was hitting that club well. Then he was lamenting that he had to drop extra money to get it reshafted. What's the big deal.

If some guy drops $2k on his clubs, and is happy with them, I don't see the problem. He doesn't need to be a professional to own nice sticks.

I guess he was irritated at the guy bragging more than anything.

There are those that will always brag about how much they paid for a certain item. I know a few colleagues who like to mention how much he paid for this and that. I think their low self esteem makes them feel that they have to brag about $$$ (or name dropping for others) in order to feel superior.

I thought this thread was gonna be about the guy that is an obvious 50 handicap that wants to give everyone lessons....he's always next to me

I actually brag about how cheap I get stuff sometimes, guess I need to quit that....

Good thing you said that - I was going to brag about how little I spent on my Nickent driver (psst . . . $29).

I thought this thread was going to provide methods of annoying people at the driving range.

Sport Chek (Canadian sports chain - fitness, snowboards, bikes, hockey, the whole schmere).

I think it was old stock (Hyperforged 9* something or other). It didn't have a mark on it and for a stock grip it's really a nice one. Basically, it looks like brand new, but when I tried to find a review it came up with drivers from 2004. Only flaw - it's a bit loud.

Not as loud as my Cleveland HiBORE XLS. I don't know WHY they made it so loud... but if I'm on the right side of the range... the people on the left side can hear it like it's RIGHT next to them (about 30 stalls away).

I tend to wear headphones and listen to my iPod when at the range, so I don't really notice who's hitting what... but even WITH the iPod on... I can hear my driver. It's kinda annoying... but I hit it well and I don't want to trade it in for anything else just yet (unless I get the Callaway FTi).

Golf is the type of game where you can spend a lot of money on equipment if you want to.And unfortunately there's lots of people who like to spend as much as possible thinking it'll improve them, but also just because they want to brag about how much they've spent, sad as that is.Maybe he was one of those.Like others have said though, maybe he was just pleased about hitting it well.Personally, even if I was hitting it like Johnson, or Quiros I wouldn't be shouting it from the rooftops.'Cause you know come Saturday or Sunday you'd be hitting it short and out of bounds.
A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

I was more bothered that he felt it necessary to just out of the blue talk about how much his clubs were to the kid next to me. The kids look was priceless he gave a quick wtf look and shook his head once the guy started hitting again. I don't mind people talking about a good deal on something, but I'm sure the kid who got the comment directed his way was less than thrilled about how expensive the fellows driver was. I dont mind that he spent that much, his money :) but why do you have to blurt it out when your hitting drives and cant really hit the low irons (i watched it was sad)

Rockbottom has a nickent on sale for 50 bucks.

I love the guy who is giving advice and wants to show you how it's done with your balls. Let me shank in peace.

F dropping extra dollars... sure I have nice clubs & shafts...but I test everything... and then buy my sh** from a wholesale spot or a retailer...unless I get a discount from spots.
but maybe you do want to get paired up with him so you can show him that your $29 driver works just as well as his $650 driver.

There are a lot of oddballs at ECG. In the summertime, there is one member there literally everyday. He has a bright yellow Thunderbird, and he buys a jumbo bucket and brings his own colored balls to chip and pitch with. He spends hours a day pitching and chipping, I guess he is just retired and living the dream.

I would say yes, it has a nice flight with the stiff shaft and it's relatively easy to hit. I have the 4dx evolver (as you can see in the sig) so i cant vouch for the regular 4dx which I believe is the same price. The ball flight is nice, I don't feel it goes too high which is a problem I have with most of my clubs, so far every time I've gone to the range to hit it after warming up with my irons I hit it quite well. I used to have a problem of slicing balls well right but so far with the evolver I don't have that issue; as long as I put a solid swing on it it has a hard time not going straight or a slight draw.

They do have interchangeable shafts etc but that kit wont come with the one you get at rockbottom, you could always check ebay if you end up loving the head but want to try a few different shaft combos. I believe they are interchangeable and you can find a 6pack of shafts + tool without much difficulty for now i would think.

for 57.50 + 10 shipping I'm not sure how much better you could do for something that is new, although there are always deals out there somewhere. My one gripe is the ugly headcover, I just use an old Callaway one to cover it up I can't stand the bright green monstrosity they sent with it :)

It would do most people good to see their swing on film. It certainly keeps you from bragging about it. I've seen people talking about how their swing is just so great, and then watched as they appeared to use a golf club to try to swat an invisible fly, only to make contact with a golf ball at some point, which then slices 50 yards.

That's why I never go to the range without a camera. I know what my swing looks like, and what it doesn't. No need to tell other people for me though, I'll let results speak for themselves if I really need that fulfillment.

I guess at my local driving range, theres always so few people there when i go, which is during the day, that many times Im the only one there. There arent really individual stalls as some mention on here, and about 10 people is about all it would take to fill it up. If there is someone else there they usually just mind their business, might just smile and wave to acknowledge im there and just continue hitting. I usually wont bother them either. As far as being paired up with a stranger, that will never happen around here as courses just dont do that. If I want to play alone, I play alone, again playing during the day(as I work in the evening) there just arent as many people on course. And tee times, just dont need them, show up and play, first one to first tee goes first. I wont ever mention my clubs unless someone asks me about them. I only have about $200 in all my clubs(driver, 3 wood, hybrids, irons and putter) and they work for me and are nice looking clubs so nobody will know the difference.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
