I have recently been thinking about buying a 3 wood. The only problem is I don't know if I really need one! I currently own a 10* Callaway X460 and a Callaway 17* Hybrid that equals a 2 iron / 4 wood. I am pretty decent with the driver and I am surgical with the Heavenwood off a the tee. I never use the heavenwood other than off the tee. So I was just looking for some opinions as to wethre or not I actually needed the 3 wood? Any help you give would be great!

I've learned the hard way that I need a three wood, and I'd damn well better learn how to hit it properly. I tried the route of buying a Nickent hybrid (20 degrees), but it plays like a much less accurate five-iron for me. When you hit a perfect drive on the par 5 and realize you still have 300 yards to go, there isn't much option left, except to grip it and rip it with a 3 wood.

There are plenty of options left. I hit my 4H about 160-170 yards; if I had 300 yards to go, I'd hit that and then have a 7I or 6I left. Until I get much better with my 3W, I'd rather be in the fairway with an iron for GIR then who-knows-where and possibly sending out a search party.

I should probably do that, but I think I'm getting an inferiority complex, or something, when I don't hit the ball far enough. I'd rip it with a 3 wood and then have a wedge shot into the green (the one club I can reliably make the green with). As it is, I'll risk the search party.

(if I don't hit a gopher burner with my 3 wood).

For all my talking about that, I'd probably hit 3W in that situation too. Especially now that I have one that I like.

I wouldn't say you neccesarialy need a 3 wood, but I use one and really like using it, find it easier to hit than a 5 wood, which is the opposite to a lot of people. I get a lot more distance, and just generally find it easier, you should demo one and see whether you like it.

Where I find that a 3-wood is indispensible is on long par 5s. Sometimes with these 550+ holes you will need that club just to get close or on with the second shot.

Also, on severely windy days I'll hit 3-wood rather than driver because my shot balloons less.

Nevertheless, play what fits your game.

My friend uses a 5 wood that he hits consistant and he's a 3 handicap golfer, I personally prefer the 3 wood, I have a 15 degree to help me reach the par 5's, but, I also agree that you must be confortable using one.

I was having trouble with my 3 wood, so went to a demo day that had a launch monitor, and I found that I hit a 5 wood much more consistently than the 3. The Ping rep snuck in the 5 wood on me in between hitting different 3 woods, and the numbers were much better overall. He recommended putting a 3 wood shaft in it to help get a few more yards, and I've been very happy with it. Hit it pretty good off the tee and the turf.

In your case, I wouldn't say you need a 3 wood. Sine you hit the heavenwood like a fairway metal, you already have what you need. I think your set is just fine.

3 wood replaces the driver in hard to hit fairways . It is very common knowldege that this is a superior club as compared to long irons and hybrids . With distance in mind the 3 wood outdistance all other clubs except the driver . Now if you are not comfortable hitting it then you must be hitting the wrong club . Try some out at the proshop and see what fits your game .

i had a driver, cobra dws 18 degree hybrid, and a ben hogan 4h that i hit like a 3 or 2 iron. i couldn't hit that cobra off the tee well, or work it off the deck. i traded it in for one of those new cobra 3 woods, and it goes further of the tee, and to me is as easy to hit of the deck. but why listen to a 25 handicap who thinks he can wok the ball off the deck with a three wood?

It's worth learning to hit a three wood. Good off the tee when driver might be too much, long second's, thirds, fourths (bad hole), windy days, etc. You can always fall back to a 16-19 deg hyrbid if needed for poor lie, un-even footing. I find I need a real flat surface to be consistent with the three wood. Also (for me) it seems to be easier to swing when your a bit tired.

I don't care how good you are with your driver, you need a 3 wood.

What's your backup plan when (1) the driver just won't work or (2) you can't afford to drive it through the fairway? Harvey Penick would take your driver out of your bag with a 17 handicap. Well, he'd probably take mine at the same time. If you can hit that hybrid 230 off the tee, forget what I just said. Sounds like the biggest problem is being in love with tees.

I still carry one, but I hardly use it.

Take your average long par 5 hole ... 500 + yards. For me it is driver 220-240, then 3 wood 200-210...that still leaves me at 420-450 yards...50 or more yards short, I'll never hit a long par 5 in 2 shots, even in my best 2 shots in my wildest dreams. Even on a hole that is par 4 or short par 5 I will still be short.

Better for me to take driver and maybe 5 iron twice or some similar strategy. I hit my 5 wood almost as long as my 3 wood, anyhow, and much more accurately.

I don't use the 3 wood off the tee...the driver is more forgiving for me. I still carry the 3 wood, but it isn't used much.

Before you give info you should have your facts right. the driver has a degree number, not somewhere between 4.5-7.5 . Hitting a 10* driver off the deck all the time must be pretty tough as the pro don't do it very often with their 10* drivers. If it was a smart play I'd think more of the pros would not be coming up short on par fives.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
