Brilliant, the topic I am looking for!

I am looking to get a Vokey Spin Milled wedge after trying a SM60.04 on Sunday

I am torn between the finishes; tour chrome and oil can.

Tour chrome is swaying me as it wouldn't look different compared to the rest of my clubs.

Oil can - not sure if I would notice the benefits of the feel?

Any advice, or is it a personal preference thing, and is the difference so noticeable between the 2 finishes?

From golfdigest.co.za
"Vokey also has developed a new finish he calls Tour Chrome specifically for players who don't want the glare of a chrome wedge or the rust or gunmetal look, either. According to Vokey, the Tour Chrome is a satin (as opposed to nickel) finish that doesn't reflect the sun nearly as much as chrome. And because it is a finish -- as opposed to leaving the clubhead "raw" -- it helps prolong the life of the club by nearly 50 percent. "It's by far the most popular finish with our players," said Vokey, "because it gives them the look and feel they are after, but they don't have to change out their wedges as often.""

Cheers

Edited to say... that I am heading to the pro shop after work tonight to try out the 58.08 and 60.08 to compare to the 60.04, and will come home with the best one, but am still undecided on finish..... tour chrome or oil can?!?!?!?! Anyone?

Chrome Finish. I really can't stand the rust. Unless you are a PGA pro and maybe have a handicap in the + region, the chrome finish will give you enough spin compared to the oil can finish. Besides chrome lasts longer too so better investment choice for golfers who are not sponsored by Titleist...

I just got a spin milled 56º with the chrome finish. I don't like brown or black finishes on my clubs.

I'd prefer just a normal satin finish... However, If the Vokey wedges came in a black (i'm not sure if they do or not), I'd love to own them!

no doubt. oil can or raw. love the rust. soft feel and lots of bite. the uglier the better. in fact, when i play in fla. love the fact that they rust over night. rusty gunk is hard on my golf towels but they work good.

I had a set of Titleist oil can wedges (52, 56, and 60) but played my friends Titleist Chromes while mine were being regripped, and found his nice at address. The Chrome also seems thinnner and more blade like which I found gave me more confidence. I now have a set of Titleist Tour Chromes (50, 56, 60) and love them.

They made them in a black nickel finish. It's more gray than black. I have the same wedges you do and would have gotten another tour chrome for my sand wedge but I picked up the black nickel on fleabay in near mint for $35 shipped.

I can't decide, I've got both oil can and tour chrome sets (54.10's, 58.08 in the oil can and 58.12 in the tour chrome). I'll know more this spring which one I like better. I haven't played the tour chromes yet but I liked the oil cans. I also have a black nickel gap wedge I use instead of my pitching wedge - it's money on approach shots. Ultimately, I will probably go with the ones that feel softer around the greens. It may well be the oil cans in the end.

Gotta love the oil cans. Strip off the finish with some Coke and the wedge looks beautiful. That's just my opinion...

Looking to finally get serious with some wedges. Currently only have a PW and an american open 56 sand wedge.

Just started to try to understand all the technical jargon around wedges. I have my mind set on the oil can bob vokey's. Thinking I'm gonna go ahead and get the sand, gap, and lob wedge.

Wondering how often a gap wedge is used on avg.

Not sure about the lie and bounce I should get. What are the the pros and cons for the different variatons?

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
