After being that pleased with my 909 D2 and 909 Hybrids, I bought a 909 F2 3W ..... but although it should be an easier club from the tee at narrow holes .... I have a lot of trouble hitting the 3W from the tee.

Second shot on the long par 5's from the fairway .... great, but from a tee I tend to slide it under ball, balloooooning the ball ....... I am about to leave the damn thing in the bag or even at home.... maybe the F3 would have been a better choice to hit it from a tee.....

Just remember it's not a driver, meaning don't set up with it off your front foot. Depending on your swing the 3wd should be off the inside heel and you don't need to tee it up super high either. I've been playing mostly 3 wood off the tee (except for saturdays round where I him a new 907D2 I just got). Also, remember Tempo don't try to kill it or you'll end up really getting aggro!

Anyways, I have an older Titleist 3wd that I freaking love, I can only image how the 909 is.

Good luck!

Are you teeing the ball up when you use it from the tee? If that's the only difference between the tee and fairway, why not just hit it off the deck instead?

great thinking, but when striking let's say an iron off the deck ..... I always tee it up 0,3 cm (about 1/8") or even less.....

Great quote from Merry Mex to I think it was Johnny Miller about playing the ball off the deck in the tee box "it's the only advantage this game gives you kid, why would you take it away?" or something along those lines.. Plus I had a local pro say that to a buddy of mine more or less.. he said it's not like your hitting a 1 iron you know.

Hit down on the ball, don't try helping it into the air. If you still balloon it, tee it lower. I tee it as low as a short iron to make sure I don't get the club under the ball.

I agree with the advice offered-when I have trouble with the 3 wood it's because I start swinging it like a driver (probably because the shaft is 43"). It's more of a sweeping motion than a hybrid or long iron, but still have to hit down on it.

I do think that the F3 is supposed to be a little easier to hit off the tee than the F2. I have an F2 myself, which has a shallower face than the F3 so it's easier to hit off the deck. I hit both and noticed a little difference, but I liked the versatility of the F2 (which is much easier to hit off the deck than the F3, IMO). But I agree with the other suggestions in this thread; if you hit the F2 well off the deck, give yourself "the perfect fairway lie" with a tee on the tee box, and let 'er rip.

If it's a new wood and it's not a custom job, it's probably too long. Choke down on it a bit and play it more like your hybrids than your driver.

I'm gonna use that this weekend.

Yup, this helped me. I wasn't hitting my 3 wood for the longest time, completely took it out of my game. 2 weeks ago I decided to spend range time learning to hit it again. It wasn't until I gripped down a bit that I felt that "a ha!!" feeling.

Hold on, hit down on your 3 wood off the tee? My 3 wood mishit is a skyball which I was sure came from hitting down on the ball. I tee the ball up where the bottom of the ball is just below the top of the 3 wood. Could it be too high possibly? How high are people tee'ing their 3 woods?

I hit my 3 wood off the tee more often than not and the only time I tee it up is if the tee box sucks, besides that its off the deck. If I do tee it up is very low, just enough to hover it above the grass. I find if I tee it to high my shots are more likely to go errand. If I hit it off the deck I lose 10 yards distance but am usually in the fairway or maybe 10 ft off it.

Yes, if I stand behind it ...... it is like what a driver was in the old days, just checked at Titleist ..... it is 43 inches !!!!

I tee low to prevent skyballs, bottom of the ball around the top of the 3 wood is automatic sky balls.

General rule, top quarter of the ball above the 3wd head. So you want it pretty low...

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
