Today I was playing a very SLOW round of golf. 3 hour front 9, we left after the 16th right around the 6 hour mark. Anyway, it was very difficult to get a groove working, and as a result I had a few blow up holes. Anyway on the first par 5 of the back side, I hit a TERRIBLE drive, followed up by a brilliant 3h that a tree stopped dead in its track leaving me 300 yards away from teh green. a 7 iron and a pitching wedge and a skulled wedge put me on the green in 5. About 18 feet away. I proceed to sink the putt for a 6. I felt really good about the 18' that I drained, but at the same time felt very deflated to take a bogey after that putt.

Anybody else have those?

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I always do, I put little marks in the boxes on the card so I dont lose count, nor do I keep it in my mind. So I sank a 30 footer, got all joyous, thought I was the next Phil, looked at the card and figured out it was to save a double bogey.. I was like damn...

I've had some great bogies, although not necessarily saved by a putt. Last week I hooked my drive on 18 into a tree which deflected it farther left, all the way across the 9th fairway and in between a couple of trees. The GPS said 198 yards to the center of the green, and the last 60 is over water, with trees to hit between and 6" deep, matted rough on the greenside edge of the lake. I decided to go for it, because trying to layup back to the 18th fairway was just about as difficult. I hit a pure shot with a hybrid and landed in the edge of the deep rough, about 8 feet off the green and 30 feet from the hole. I hacked out of the rough and 2 putted for one of my better bogies ever.

Contrary to popular opinion, bogey isn't always a bad score.

long putts to save bogey are both thrilling and deflating at the same time, but not as much as chipping in to save bogey....

felt very deflated to take a bogey after that putt.

You get a shot on the hole becuause you play off 18. You made a great putt after some bad shots. What could have been an 8 ends up being a nett par.

What is the problem? And....a "brilliant" 3h does not hit a tree and get stopped dead in its tracks.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Still a lot more thrilling than pitching up and 2 putting for a triple on that scorecard.

I focus mainly on my good shots and what I did then. I may hit one left and one right, but standing on the tee box I think about that shot I hit straight. I'm as bothered by a bogey as anyone, but I try not letting it get to my head. If I make a good putt, great, I saved a stroke, doesn't matter if it was for par or bogey, a stroke is a stroke. Get that positive feeling going through the round and you'll see some good putting.

The worst one of those that I made was on a par 5 513 yards. (Now this hole is a special one. If you overshoot the green, you're looking at a 15 rolling hill.

Anyways, I sliced my drive shot about 180 yards to the left. 3H was horrible, another shot with a 8 iron. Seems poor so far....

2 below par with about 200 yards away from the hole. Took a shot with my 5I, and now I'm 50 yards from the hole, 1 under par, in the rough. Under estimating my poor PW, I took it out, shot, hoping for the best. Ended up overshooting by 20 yards.

Now I'm at par at the bottom of a hill. Take out the 64* and shoot. Two shots later I'm on the green faced with a 17 yard putt. Ended up making it for a Double Bogey.

Not my proudest moment as a golfer.

Would you rather miss the putt and get a double bogey? A stroke is a stroke.

The few times I have had a round with no double bogeys, I had a couple of one 1-putt bogey. And, a long putt or chip-in to save bogey reminds us to keep trying, not despair.

If we ever play together and you sink a long putt for bogey, I'll let you do it over again if you want.

--------------
One of my wildest bogeys: Playing over a lakeside par 3 with my boss. He hits shot 10 feet from the cup... I hook a 4 iron 30 yds. to left of green into a swampy puddle. I take an unplayable lie, and then loft a sand wedge over a tree and stop it 11 feet from the pin. I'm away, and drain the putt for a bogey. My boss gets flustered and three putts.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Ant example of a great bogie save with a up and down on your score card. The putter and good short game is the great equalizer.

Last week I had a chip-in from just beyond the fringe about 30 to 40 feet from the hole to save bogey. Just like how you felt, I was thrilled with my chip, and disgusted it was for bogey.

I think I actually have better putts when I'm trying to save higher scores. I think the pressure of avoiding double bogey is greater than the pressure of avoiding bogey, so I'm more likely to putt well.

I made a sweet putt for a 9 a couple weeks ago on an easyish 390 dogleg left par 4. 3 in the woods off the tee (kinda Tin Cup'd it), approach shot to 20 feet but left myself a tricky downhill slider, drained the putt. Still wound up shooting 36 on the front and 39 on the back .

Exactly. For me, i sometimes get a bigger rush (and sometimes some momentum) from these kinds of putts as opposed to a boring two-putt for par. Yes, the score is worse, but the fact that i salvaged a stroke pumps me up. Kind of like how Tiger often seem to get more pumped up from a difficult par save putt as opposed to a 5-footer for birdie.

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭

    • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
