Actually, slope doesn't affect scratch golfers. Rating is what a scratch golfer is expected to shoot as his average differential (I believe it's differential).

Not the average, no. The average of his 10 best of his last 20.

By the way, what are you shooting for those 9-hole rounds that aren't being entered? If they're better than your index, you might want to google "sandbagging".

I shoot the same 9 hole rounds as a typical 18. One of my best 18 hole round included a +1 37 on the front. I have never shot below a 39 on just a 9 hole round.....Plus, if you declare a round "practice" before you tee off, you dont have to enter it. I dont enter 9 hole rounds, because golf is played over 18 holes. I could care less if the USGA can calculate my handicap based off of 9 hole rounds or not.

Plus, I keep a handicap because I am trying to see how good I can potentially get. Why would I not enter a round that is going to help me. Im not playing in any tournaments and when I play with friends we play straight up, since none of them have handicaps. I know what sandbagging is. I used to drag race cars. Well aware of the term. I would post the link to my handicap site, but it is a banned word on the sand trap. You could always go to Google and type in Kyle Paulhus. You can find my rounds/handicap there. I get excited when I shoot a great round and immediately change my handicap here on TST after each revision. I love seeing it going down.

Maybe if you actually read the thread you would know? Where does it ever say my low round is 82 with my best two nines combined? Does it say that anywhere? No. 82 is my best full consecutive 18. Everyone knows it's much harder to shoot your handicap over 18.

even if you put up low scores on 9 you should be able to break 80 as a 5.7 like you must be shooting right around par or under on your 9 hole rounds. if we all can take our 2 best 9 hole rounds for our handicap we would all be scratch golfers mixing and matching our best 9's.

jml22- is usually does take like 5 minutes to fix those problems or atleast bandade them until you can get to the range so they dont ruin a round. i can see it happening like once in a match i had the shanks so bad i shot 50 but i worked it out the next day. the other thing iv found is that if a good golfer is having a swing problem they dont want to talk about it or ask about it because usually for me the problems work themselves out with some time on the range and experimenting.

Yeah, differential, right?

That's not a differential... A differential is your score minus the course rating times 113/slope (and then * 0.96). You get a differential every time you play.

A scratch golfer's 10 best differentials should average out to 0.0 and their scores - if they were all on the same course - would average out to the course rating.

Going back to slope and rating.

A course within 20 miles of me has a rating of 67 but a slope of 121. How could there be such a big difference? I don't understand why it is rated below average, but the slope is above average?

Posted
Going back to slope and rating.

Rating is what a scratch golfer is expected to shoot, and slope is how much harder the course plays for a bogey golfer. The slope, therefore, is a measure of how much higher a bogey golfer will score above the rating of course, no matter what that may be.

Going back to slope and rating.

I don't think I've ever actually seen a course with a slop below 113. Is is really the average, or just the baseline?

So, 113 is a course of average difficulty, but 113 is not an average of all slope ratings in the world, it seems like. Although I do want to edit my last post. I have seen a couple courses at below 113. And I would imagine my slope ratings are all a little higher than average because I play the tips or the second farthest tees usually.

From that article you posted:
The minimum slope is 55 and the maximum is 155 (slope does not relate specifically to strokes played as course rating does). The slope rating for a course of average difficulty is 113.

Said perfectly well, yes.

A bogey golfer will play a golf course rated at 113 in 18 strokes more than the scratch golfer (10 best of 20 scores for each). The vast majority of golf courses are above 113, yes.

All of them. Each set of tees has its own rating and slope.

Sorry, I knew that, I asked the wrong question! :)

What I meant was, when people talk about their course's slope rating what tees are they referring too? It's one thing to say you're a 5.0 on a course rated at 135 but if you're playing the front tees it might not be an accurate depiction of your ability.

Um... You enter your score from the tees you played from. If the white tees are 72/113, and the black tees are 74/140, and you played from the whites, you enter your score at the 72/113 number. If you played from black, you enter your score and 74/140. Your handicap is calculated by the tees you play, not the course you play, so there is no that 5 couldn't be an accurate depiction of your ability.
