For me it totally depends on the circumstance. I will use anything from 7I to my LW. Also I have been getting pretty crafty with my hybrid from off the fringe with a lot of green to work with.

Alot will depend on the course I am playing, but generally it is either my 54 or 58 degree wedge, depending on distance.

I will bump and run on a course with slower greens.

Was multiple but i purchased Phil's DVD and I have been using the SW for almost all hits around the green. He explains that you can use multiple but he uses 1 so I have been following his teaching to see if I improve any.

I use multiple but for the majority it's my 52. Only if I need to carry over something or there's not enough green to play a bump and run will i'll use my 56 if the lie is shaggy or my 60 if the lie is tight. Very occasionally I'll use my PW. I used to use an 8 iron a lot for chipping with some success so maybe i'll give it another go sometime.

Basic chip shot is with 8i (shorter grass) and PW or GW (longer grass, or going down hill). For a pitch and run, I use a PW (less likely to check up too soon) or an 8i.

Special situations:
* Hard greens with long way to cup (40' or more?), especially if up hill a bit: 6i
* For dense, deeper grass just off the fringe and near the cup, I'll do a chop-chip with a SW. (It had some fancy name a few years back, but I can't remember it.

The two special shots work best if I have practiced them earlier in the week.

Interesting thread....

I am nearly exclusive to the LW. Anything that needs a short carry and short run (about 10ft) I am solid with the LW...basically anything inside 30Yrds is going to be LW, and with my style of play (or lack there of) this situation plays into my game more often than not.

I guess my 2nd option would be SW, but I am not very confident on this method, and thus the crappy results, but I have used anything from 3h down with very mixed results. The one time that I "putted" from right outside the fringe with my 3h, had about 45ft to the hole, with a left to right downhill roll...got to 6" from the hole, and still managed to 2 putt...ratz (It was my second or third time out)
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

I used to use only my two wedges, but after practicing with other clubs, I use them as often as I can. Rarely something below a 7i.

I use to use a couple different clubs depending on the shot I wanted to make, 7i-SW. Now I just use my SW. I can open the clubface for a shot over an obstacle, or a short sided lob shot if I'm feeling saucy. And I can hit a bump and run with a square face and some forward shaft lean. It takes out one variable and allows me to concentrate on how I want to hit the shot. It's easier for me to practice with just one greenside club, and getting creative around the practice green is a blast.

I use my 54* and 8 iron the majority of the time... I feel that I can hit almost any shot with either of those clubs.

In different situations I will also use my 60*, my 5 iron and often from the cuff I'll use my 3 wood.

I try and keep it pretty simple, and really get to know 2 clubs so it takes over thinking what club to use out of the equation.

Cheers, Allan

I use anything from a 6i through 60*. As most others have said it just depends on the required shot. I love hitting the 60* and seeing it stop dead on impact, but that is an iffy shot for me. In fact I sculled a full swing 60 last weekend and sent it about 150 yards a foot off the ground, right at the club house entrance.

It totally depends on the ratio "distance from ball to green / distance from border of green to pin". As a rule of thumb (without slope or roll correction) I use : PW for 50/50, SW(56°) for 75/25 and 9i for 25/75. And then a multitude of variations depending on slope and roll or how low the ball has to stay to avoid branches. I think I regularly use any club between SW and 7i, and sometimes go up to 6i or even 5i.

DITTO!......could not have said it any better.

I voted one, but very rarely might use 7-8 iron uphill with long roll.

99.9% of the time I use this old Wilson JP Grind pitching wedge. I have no idea of the stated loft, but the way it is ground I can make it any loft I want. I am just more comfortable using the one club. It takes a lot of practice and I am certainly not always perfect, but just have more feel and comfort that way.

Depends on the length you want the ball to travel. Actually the swing should not change from one chip to the next. You should be able to use any from a 7 up to a SW depending on how far you staying from the hole. Practice is the only way out.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
