btw, why is it dangerous to play in lightning?

Hold up a 1-iron! You'll be safe! ;)

Lightning is much too powerful for a simple golf grip keep the charge away from your hands. Also, graphite (graphite itself a conductor) shafts are really made of carbon fiber, which conducts electricity.

Also, the lightning doesn't have to hit the club, it can hit you pretty easily.

I'll generally play unless it's already raining before I go out or the forecast is for continuous bad stuff (i.e., lightning and thunder). It also helps that I don't mind playing in a light rain or waiting out a passing storm.

Yup, I'd agree. Light riain isn't too bad.

Yeah, to me, light rain is actually good. Fewer people play. More open tee times, faster pace of play. I'd easily put up with a little water for that.

Steve

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

I will play in the rain if I am walking. I hate staying on the cart path. It just makes the game take too long. I can walk it faster and its better for me.

Lee Trevino got struck by lightning once and it almost killed him. It didn't strike him directly either. It hit a pond that he was sitting near during a rain delay in a tournament. Lightning is not something you want to take any chances with, if you see any in the distance or hear thunder clear the course right away. I've always heard that golfers as a group get struck by lightning more than any other single group. Whether that is true or not I can't say but I do know it can kill you. As to conductivity have you ever seen what lightning can do to a tree? Trees don't conduct electricity, but I've seen them be literally blown to bits by it. I've also seen where lightning struck the top of the tree, ran down the tree trunk, stripping the bark off in one long piece the whole way down to the ground. That happened to a massive pine tree in my yard and I found the 150' piece of bark laying against the fence probably a hundred yards away. It killed the tree and I had to pay a tree service to come and take the tree down because it was so big. This pine tree was in my fairly heavily wooded yard, but it happended to be the tallest tree in that part of my neighborhood. That's why they tell you not to take shelter under a tree.

Check the weather out just to see if I should be prepared to get wet. Other than that; no thunder, no problem.

I always check with tv weather channel and accuweather on the net.

We still got caught yesterday in a rain/lightning & light hail storm that came out of new york state. We walk so it was not a pleasant walk in.

type in your zip code up top, click enter
at the bottom left of the page, look for hourly weather graph

Should show a good represenation of what might happen. Given occasional is pretty much screwed, Likely i think is like 60% chance there might be rain, not that will rain 60% of the time, big misconception on weather percentages, Chance i think is 40-60%, something like that..

Or you can go to Weather.com and check out the hourly, they giver percentages.

Weather.com has a pretty decent future cast radar as well.

Every morning, while laying in bed, I always check the weather on my ipod touch. I usually have the golf cities around me in my favorites, and then I check the radar. If it's windy, then I usually don't feel like playing. The temperature generally tells me what to wear.

    • Day 85 - 2026-03-17 30 minutes of putting work, 15 chipping. Getting reacquainted with the Scottsdale green and greenside terrain. Really freaking hot here.
    • Day 9 (17 Mar 26) - Worked with alignment today to work on getting properly lined up with target point using alignment rods.  Worked on getting takeaway parallel to alignment line.  Solid session.
    • Day 212 3-17 Flow work and arching. Hit some foam balls. Recorded
    • Im struggling to hit a 3 wood any distance. Im 67 now and used to use a 3 wood all the time. My swing speed with the 3 woods is between 80-84. I am only 5'5" tall. I currently have 4- 3 woods in my used club selection. I have an old Titliest 910FD, a Taylormade Sim2, a PXG gen 4 and a Ping G430. None of these can i hit more than 180 yards and often much shorter. My driver which is a Ping G430 I hit about 210-225. Heres the crazy thing, I carry a Taylormade Sim2- 7 wood that I hit 175-185. I carry an older titliest H1 Hybrid 23* that i hit 165-175. All yardages are with carry. When i hit both the Hybrid and the 7 wood they feel like very solid strikes yet I never feel like i hit any of these 3 woods solid. All of these clubs have regular shafts of different manufacturers. I would like to be able to hit a 3 wood 200 yards. Im thinking I need to start playing with shafts, Maybe even shorten them some. I have equipment to pull shafts and set swingweights and reglue. I have a bunch of reg flex old driver shafts that i could shorten. My driver, 7 wood and Hybrid are all D3 Swingweight. The 3 woods are D3 as well.  Where would you start? Thanks Rod
    • This was a great read from start to finish. Ive been watching the LAB putters for 3 or 4 years now. Ive never been a good putter and Ive worked at putting but i just dont seem to get better at it. I play at least 3 times a week with a 11.6 Hdcp and i have owned probably 20+ putters over my last 10 years. Ive even tried the broomstick putters which at first I thought helped but as time went on i missed just as many putts. For me it comes down to nerves which i struggle to control when putting. I always feel like i have someone leaning over me watching my every move when i putt. I had a friend I play with this fall go get fitted for a LAB and he came back all excited, he bought one and he was already a player that probably averages 32 putts a round. So i think I would say hes a good putter. I used his putter a few times and the feeling i get compared to my putter which right now is a Ping Vault 2.0 Piper and just before that an Evnroll ER5v and before that Spyder Ghost........anyway the feeling I notice was that i can take the putter back without it twisting some. At least thats the feeling i get. I dont know if i would be a better putter with a LAB putter but after this year i will know as I went and was fitted and have one on the way. I can only hope it makes a differnce. If not ive got plenty of putters to fall back on!  Rod
