I don't have a 3W, but I consistently hit my 5W well off the fairway to about 220-230. If there is a hazard anywhere near that distance, I'll lay up.

A good 3w fairway shot for me is almost 200 but lately I've been struggling with it.

I dont usually like to hit my 3 wood off the fairway. I tend to push it or when I do get ahold of it I can fly the green completely or the occasional good shot will just roll rite off the green. The next club in my bag is my 3 hybrid and I hit that about 223 on average but can hit it low and run it out about 10 yards further........so thats about my max from the fairway unless I have my 2 hybrid in the bag I can hit that about 238 on average but can hit it low and run it out about 10 yards further......never been a good wood player outside of the tee box so I know my limits. I would rather lay up and take my wedges into the greens anyday.....

I hit my driver 240 yards if I rip it.
Probably 220-230 is a good hit.

For par 5's I'm left with around 200-220 yards to the green so I hit a 3i to give myself a lob wedge at the pin.
I hit a 7-5i for most par 4's.

You have 440 to 460 yard par 5s?

yes, I play off the visitors tee's since I'm a junior (stupid rule)

And my new course is pretty short.

If I have 250ish or under and a lot of room I can take my 3 wood and usually get it close to the green. Holding the green is tough though.

I really feel comfortable with 215 and under, because I can hit my hybrid straight, high, and get it to spin.

Max for me would probably be 215 if I really mash a 3-iron. Anything 175 and in I feel good about getting the distance right (just maybe not the direction).

Apologies to all, I ended up with a duplicate thread, lo siento.

Thanks for all the feedback, I was feeling a bit like a weenie, but now I feel more average.
I've been playing lately with some long hitting, low handicappers, who are also much younger.
Been getting in my kitchen a little. :)

Hitting well, I can probably put my 3W to 210-230, and my 5W to 190-210. However, I don't really trust either of those enough to go for the green with them; I mostly use them from the tee or after a flubbed tee shot to try to get out to the fairway on my second shot. They're both too erratic to aim for a small, protected target. In practice, from 200+ I'll probably try to put myself a 9I (120-130 depending on the day) away, so I can use a 9I if I hit as intended, an 8I if I come up short, and a PW if I'm a bit long.

I'm pretty happy to use any of my irons to go for the green, though, so I'd say I'm going for the green if I'm 180 or less, and have a good chance of hitting on or close from about 165-170 or less. Lately my distances have been good but I tend to pull a bit, so I've been finding myself ~ pin high but 20 yards left a lot.

230 yards if I fully crush a 3 wood and I get some roll (def. not carrying a 3 wood 230, probably carrying it 215)...

But most of the time I won't even hit that because of how good my short game is I'll just hit a 19* hybrid like 215 down to the front of the green and try to chip and putt on.

There's only a few holes every now and then that I'm that far away on on a par 4 anyway. I drive the ball about 260 yards off the tee so I don't usually have that long in.

I think iacas can merge them and clean up the thread (like removing this part of the discussion) in pretty short order. He'll probably be around later today (I think he actually works at work - weird).

    • Day 118 - Spent some time working on the full swing. Need to film some swings for Evolvr tomorrow.
    • playing with cleveland hybrid irons have friends that use hybrids anyone using hybrid irons or hybrids would appreciate fwwdback
    • I dont know if I really have a favorite, but there are two that have stuck in my mind for a very long time. #15 at Erie Golf course during the Finals of the EDGA Matchplay. Was up early and then lost a few holes in row so the match was close again. My opponent had a short putt for birdie. I hit past hole high, but 35 feet right. I drained the putt and looked over at my opponent who was in disbelief.   #8 at Whispering Woods during another year of the EDGA Matchplay. Was playing a very cocky opponent who made sure to mention on the first tee how many times he won the club championship at this course. I hammered this 30 footer that clanked off of the pin and dropped. My opponent was disgusted and that made me weirdly happy. I went on to win 5&3 or something like that, so that entire day has stayed in my memory.
    • Day 20: Did 30 minutes after getting home from work, before kid's baseball practice. This session was piecing out the new hip move in transition, doing 2-3 rehearsals from the top, and then hitting a ball from between P5/P6. Did another 45 minutes after baseball practice and dinner. Did 30 more minutes of what I did earlier, and then about 15 minutes of full swings trying to incorporate athletically.
    • Day 296: did a stack session.
