This may have been debated before, but what the heck . . . I know golf is a game of tradition - gentlemen's game, etc. But I'm of the mind that PGA Tour players should be allowed to wear shorts on tour. I'm a public course guy so it may be that my perception is skewed, but 99% of the players I see on the course are wearing shorts in the summer. So why shouldn't the pros wear them? Wouldn't a relaxed dress code on the tour make these guys more accessible to the public and put some personality in the game? I'm not advocating dressing like slobs, but I think more leeway in what is acceptable would be great (and might cut down on some of the stupid color ensembles we've be seeing on some of the pros).

I guess the one place where I might not want to see shorts would be the Masters. And maybe the British Open. Usually it's cool enough there so you probably would't see many shorts anyway.

Thank God the LPGA allows some latitude to its players when it comes to dress code. Don't get me wrong - I admire the ladies' athleticism and ability, but its also nice to admire the entire package as well.

... But I'm of the mind that PGA Tour players should be allowed to wear shorts on tour. ...

The guys look like dorks in shorts. I can't put my finger on the reason but I think the dress code as-is helps the game.

It looks more professional to be in pants. The PGA tour is never going to change that rule I don't think. Some PGA sections allow shorts though in the section tournaments and Pro-ams. The Sun Country Section where I live leaves it up to the hosting head pro to decide the dress code. Most of the guys let the club pros wear shorts.

greenie-i don't think you want to see some of these guys in shorts. and to take it one step further, how long do you think it will take before a player shows up on the first tee wearing shorts with white shoes and black socks, and not as a fashion statement. it has only been a few years since they started letting the caddies wear shorts. with the advances in fabric technology, the long pants aren't that uncomfortable anymore. IMO.

Point well taken on dorkiness, etc. Some people are always going to look better covered up. I don't feel very strongly about this, but I was interested in what fellow golfers think.

I still think a dress code on the LPGA would be a bad thing though.

I think the LPGA changed their dress code rule to draw more males and sponsors to watch and help their tour. and it's working. Do you really think they wear those short skirts (with shorts) on the street when they leave the course.

Jesper Parnevik instantly came to mind, although his would probably be as a fashion statement.

I wouldn't mind seeing shorts on the PGA Tour, but it's probably best to leave it the way it is. Let the amateurs wear shorts if they want, but keep the professionals in pants. Either way looks classy to me, but there really isn't any reason to change things.

Yes there is: it violates the PGA Tour's dress code. That's what's "wrong" with it.

Whether or not you agree is a topic for another forum thread (which we already have).

What'dya mean, that's what is being discussed on THIS thread as well ....

What is being discussed is what ought to be the case, not what the present rules of dress are - I think we all know that ...... Golfers will all look like dorks in shorts for some reason - is that the argument? .... whereas I'm assuming this isn't being said about tennis players etc (they stopped wearing long pants ages ago, didn't they?). Then exactly WHAT is it about male golfers that makes them short-incompatible, aesthetically speaking? Are they, as a group, highly bow-legged, or knobbly-kneed, or what? OK, they are often hairy-legged, is that verboten with the leg-police? Of course there is the tradition argument, that I can understand and to some extent agree with. But what other argument is there, exactly? Me, I look rather fetching in shorts, or so my wife tells me .............

Oh yes, you're right. THIS is the duplicate thread.

Golfers will all look like dorks in shorts for some reason - is that the argument?

It ain't mine. Mine is that shorts aren't very professional.

I don't want the PGA to wear shorts! I don't even wear them myself even in the Ohio summer. It just does not look professional.
No problem with the LPGA wearing them. In the past I wouldn't watch them without shorts but now they got GAME!

    • Day 55 -Β 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). πŸ™‚Β Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
