I understand that the guy at the top of the leaderboard typically plays more conservative to maintain his lead while the guys that trail have to take chances to catch up.

In watching the final round today, I was perplexed at the severity of risk Phil was taking to climb in the rankings. Is he at the point where he's playing only for the win, and the difference between 4th and 21st doesn't matter? Was his +5 today completely due to risk taking or did his game fall apart too?

His game fell apart. He didn't play any more aggressively than normal so far as I can tell.

Thanks, I thought I heard the commentators say that he was "really going for it", which I thought meant he was taking more risks. Scary that a guy at his level can have his game fall apart that bad. It's not real encouraging for a noob.

"Falling apart" for him, though, is +5 vs. -2, a 7 stroke difference. We high handicappers would be thrilled to have consistency where "falling apart" means shooting 97 instead of 90.

Pretty obvious he feels this might be his chance and maybe only chance to take Tiger's number 1!

I agree 100%, I was in now way comparing myself to Phil. I was commenting on the fact that some of his hits, especially off tee, were way off the mark. It demonstrates how humbling a game it is, when a guy at that level isn't always sure where his ball is going to end up.

I only really thought his second on 18 was dumb. From the rough, with a hybrid (I think), over the ravine, then into the ravine. Good 4th shot though, he saved par.
