I ran into this issue last year. There were a few things I noticed myself doing. I wasn't being aggressive enough with these shots. I was allowing my head to come up instead of staying down on the shot. And I wasn't making a good chest turn. These are just the things I had going on with my swing.

I was shanking a lot of wedge shots the other day, which is rare for me. I did it about 5 times on the course..it started to get to my head.

DO. NOT. DECELERATE. I did it forever and I shanked every wedge I held.

My own shanking causes (YMMV):

Took club outside swing plane. More like above/outside hands.

Kicked right knee towards the ball on the downswing. Basically moved the body towards the ball on downswing.

Locked and cupped left wrist thinking of "preserving lag".

If I keep on plane, start the downswing by kicklng the left knee 45* left, my right knee moving towards the target, not the ball and think of preserving the flying wedge, no more shanks.

This is shot that can bite me at any moment and once was a plague on my short game. The only thing I have found to prevent it is this (and it might not apply to you, but here it is): take the club straight back (not inside) and turn on the downswing. If I turn back, then slide through, the clubface doesn't have time to close and I'm leading with the hosel. I have to make sure I turn back and turn through. You can forget to do that on a short shot. Not only does that eliminate the shank, it lets me hit a pitch VERY straight.

I know what you're going trough. Good luck.

Don't overdo that swinging from the inside (in to out) motion that is so nice to have with a long iron or wood. With a LW a down the line, or even slightly out to in path, is a good thing. You don't need to hit a draw with a LW and the hosel is very close to the sweet spot with short irons.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
