Just wondered, who got you started, dad, uncle, friend, teacher, .....?
Mine was my 7th grade gym teacher who took a few of use guys out on the softball field and let us hit "at" a golf ball. We did not have a golf team in high school ( plus we are a rural school ) but that was 30+ years. ha ha

My dad showed me my interlock grip and how to swing a club about 28 years ago ( i was about 5). I didnt stick with it. at about 12 or 13 he took me out on the golf course with his heavy ass leather bag and 14 clubs and whatever the hell else he had in there and taught me how to caddy. I didnt make it a full 18. He had to have his playing partners caddy carry both for the last 6 or so holes. But every round after that I caddied I finished on my own. I still didnt really try and play until about 12 years ago. That lasted a few months. Then just started again about a year ago. If I could surf better I wouldn't golf but last winter the waves were over 20 feet for about 90 days in a row if not longer.

I went to the golf range with my dad and sister when I was younger but didn't really play then. I picked it up a few years ago on my own for the sake of picking up a new hobby.

My grandpa when I was 10 (I'm 30 now). He was a die-hard, he and my grandma would take many golfing trips throughout a year - and I plan to do the same when I retire. I thank him every time I tee off on the first hole.

My dad when I was 14. Went golfing once. I didn't play again until I was 32, last year in August. I've been hooked ever since. What got me started is I picked up Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for the Wii. I had always enjoyed golf games and I stayed up until 5am playing it the day I bought it. After that I figured, well hell...why don't I just try real golf again? Called up my dad, went golfing with him again. He had just picked up a new set of clubs for himself so he let me keep his old set. I've picked up new clubs since then and I've been playing 2-4 times a week ever since.

My Grandfather, who is now 94 years old. I started left handed, and he thought it would be better to switch to right. Needless to say, I have been swinging right handed for over 20 years on and off.

My dad did initially, he played a little bit as a young man and I would tag along. Other interest took him away from it, and me also. I picked it back up when several friends at worked played. By then my dad was older and about to retire so he also took it back up, now at the age of 78 he plays over 200 rounds a year and probably close to 300.

I was an Altar Boy for the church and one of the Priests took three of us up to visit a Seminary. They had a GC on the grounds and we went out with him for a round. Interesting, but I didn't actually start playing until I started my current job. It was peer pressure.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

Oddly enough, this kid on my block stole some old golf clubs from a yard sale and put them in my parents garage. I found them and just started messing around. From there, I got my own set and spent nearly every night at the practice green at the local course (since I didn't have enough money to play or even get a range bucket).

So it started for me around the age of 13 (nearly 10 years ago...WOW...)

I started caddieing in summer after sixth grade. We had a country club about a quarter-mile down the road from our house, and older gradeschoolers suggested I give it a try.

Switched to another club the following spring, and got to go to their rather elaborate on-course caddie school. Learned about playing golf from what caddies did for their golfers.

Only other person in our extended family who was interested in golf was my aunt, an Air Force nurse. She died before I got out of high school, however, and we never got to play together. Years later, one brother and several cousins now play golf.

Focus, connect and follow through!

As a really little kid I would watch my dad go to the range and the putting green. I think I was more fascinated with the fact that the range was two stories tall. When I got a little older I would putt with him then he started letting me hit ball at the range and I later progressed to the par 3 course. After failing to make the 8th grade soccer and baseball teams, I decided that I would practice all summer at golf and try to make the team in the fall. I did, and the rest is history.

My father back in the early 60's. I played jr golf for 4 yrs and quit cuz back then golf was a old mans game. Thru my sports, mainly hard core skiing for 40+ yrs I don't have a lot of cartilage left in my right knee. Couldn't ski, wind surf, rock climb or jog anymore. All I had left was fly fishing; then one day I went to the range with a friend on the goof and hit balls. It felt pretty good, bought a cheap set of knock off clubs and I was hooked.

That was when I was 53, soon to be 62 now. I like golf a lot more now b/c I can control my nasty temper much better now and have learned how to sublimate it constructively.

    • First (12 holes) round in a year, maybe the third round in five years. After prioritizing family for a long time, I’m ready to play more golf. We moved back where I grew up and started playing golf. The course is close, but only six holes and pretty short, so the longest club I bring is a 4i. It is very undulated, with a lot of elevation changes and 4/6 greens are blind shots. The long game was relatively good (relative to my game and swing). Got things to work on, but the current state is manageable. One OB. Wedges and short game was atrocious. Chunking like I was making a garden. On the worst hole I chunked a 58° approach, then chunked three chips in a row… Time to search up some chipping topics and start practicing. I’ll take this over bad long game and good short game. The short game is easier to fix. Shot a net +17(!), gross +23, over 12 holes.
    • Day 118 - Spent some time working on the full swing. Need to film some swings for Evolvr tomorrow.
    • playing with cleveland hybrid irons have friends that use hybrids anyone using hybrid irons or hybrids would appreciate fwwdback
    • I dont know if I really have a favorite, but there are two that have stuck in my mind for a very long time. #15 at Erie Golf course during the Finals of the EDGA Matchplay. Was up early and then lost a few holes in row so the match was close again. My opponent had a short putt for birdie. I hit past hole high, but 35 feet right. I drained the putt and looked over at my opponent who was in disbelief.   #8 at Whispering Woods during another year of the EDGA Matchplay. Was playing a very cocky opponent who made sure to mention on the first tee how many times he won the club championship at this course. I hammered this 30 footer that clanked off of the pin and dropped. My opponent was disgusted and that made me weirdly happy. I went on to win 5&3 or something like that, so that entire day has stayed in my memory.
    • Day 20: Did 30 minutes after getting home from work, before kid's baseball practice. This session was piecing out the new hip move in transition, doing 2-3 rehearsals from the top, and then hitting a ball from between P5/P6. Did another 45 minutes after baseball practice and dinner. Did 30 more minutes of what I did earlier, and then about 15 minutes of full swings trying to incorporate athletically.
