Never. I carry a low bounce 58*, that I can do pretty much anything with that I can with a 60* with a lot better consistency. Regardless though, my 52* gets most of the work done.

At the risk of pissing in a lot of bowls of wheaties, most mid-handicappers and above who do carry a 60* would save strokes in the long run if they didn't........

Just my .02 worth.

I am also a 58 degree guy and since I am often short of hitting GIRs - I would say it is used 4-5 times a round unless it is one of those days where I cant miss a sand trap - and then that number would be a bit higher.

For all of you that have a hard time regulating the ball flight (height) - do you have a hard time with your other clubs as it relates to trajectory??!?!

I don't see any reason to learn how to hit a high lofted club on a low arc when I can do the same thing with a lower lofted club without changing anything. On the very rare occurrence that I actually need a high lofted shot, I can simply open up my 56° and make the shot. That is far less common than the need for a lower trajectory shot. I practice and carry the clubs I need the most rather than using limited practice time on the shots I need the least.

By the way, I can hit most any club low if I need to, just don't see a need to carry the 60°.

Yep... that's what I've observed too.

I use my 58.12 wedge quite often, mostly when inside some distance to the green, and with greenside pitches. I use the Utley style pitch (like the one Golf Evolution video demonstrated) and use this shot very often when I want to carry the ball onto the green and close to the flag. I also use it for most of my bunker shots. No problem with the bounce in hard bunkers or tight lies.

Can you describe that pitch?

I'm with you... I only use the 60 degree because I feel like I am supposed to, but when I do play it... it isn't as accurate or I get under the ball too much. Been honestly thinking about trading in the 56 and 60 for a 54 and 58.

A lot of this discussion may be predicated by the speed of the greens you normally play. On very fast greens, chipping with a 60 to get bite is more commonly seen than on slow greens. When you cannot afford any hint of bouncing the club into a chip even the slightest bit early, a 60 off a tight lie might be difficult, but it will produce the best results, at least for me. On super fast greens, chipping with even a pitching wedge will yield a difficult to control run out distance whereas greens running only 9 or 10 might be just right for such a shot. Fear of having a 20 foot come back putt is a great motivator to learn to use your 60 or 58 for chipping.

Jim Furyk said in an interview today that of all 9 bunkers shots today, all were within feet of the hole, that he used a 60 degree wedge everytime.

I think he said that he hit nine bunker shots over the week, not just today.

I used to use my 60° for everything around the green until one day at practice my coach took every wedge higher than 52° out of our bag.

Ever since then I've used my 52° for everything around the green except I use my 56° for sand shots. The only time I pull out my 60° is for little flop shots over sand or water which will be two times tops during a round.

I use it almost exclusively from 96 yards in to where I would chip around the green with a less lofted club.

Alot, but less than i used to. I've got a 50* GW that splits time with the 60 now.

I practice with my 60 alot. From every lie & distance. It's definitely my 'go-to' in tight situations.

My in laws both use their 46* PW everywhere & hole out way more often than me. Shows what i know.

I only used my 60 for green side shots. I used it so little (I was much more comfortable with a 50, or 55 degree that I ended up taking it out of my bag. Now I have room for another club, and I'm not tempted to try and use it only to flubb a 50 yard pitch.

I use mine once every other round or so. It's in the bag mainly for getting the ball over something and stopping it right now, but that situation doesn't come up very often. For standard wedge work, the 5606 does just fine.

Never cause I don't have one. I'm thinking about getting this one

Only question is should I get one more suitable for my handicap? This is apparently what the guys on tour would use...

I use mine about 6-12 times per round. I use it to chip from the rough. Used to just use 56* but with my 60* I feel I don't need to open the club face as much as before.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
