When I started golf 2 years ago, I bought everything Mizuno.  Now I'm transitioning to buying whatever I like or suits me best.

I don't think that I have ever had a matching bag...sometimes the woods, sometimes the irons and wedges.  I never found a company that had everything set up the way I liked it so it never happened.

Sun Mountain doesn't make clubs so neither of those bags have a matching stick. There are no Wilson clubs in my Wilson bag. They're good bags designed for traditional club set ups. 3 woods (or a driver and 2 hybrids), 8 irons, a couple extra wedges, and a putter.

I have only ever been inclined to match my bag to my irons.  However, that will change this winter when I get rid of the crappy mizuno bag I currently have and thown my Mp-57s into a brand new Ogio carry bag.

My driver and fairway woods match, I like them to have similar shafts.  Irons and hybrids match because they came as a set, and for consistent gapping.  And my wedges always match.

Plus,if I have a few brands in the bag, it gives me a much bigger selection of hats to choose from in the pro shop!

Nice!  Always something to think about... I can't stand the guy wearing the Titleist hat but not playing a single piece of Titleist equipment.

My regular playing partner wears 2 different Titleist hats, but his entire setup is Taylormade, I mean everything, from driver through putter, to bag, to towel. He doesn't even play Titleist balls, WTF!!?

I go for name brands but I don't look to match necessarily.  TaylorMade woods, hybrid.  Mizuno irons.  Cleveland wedges.  Odyssey putter.

Most important is getting the right shaft flex.  For me it's regular.

Not really, but I like my driver and 3W to match. When I started playing again, I had all Adams stuff...but that's just because I was able to get a deal.

I used to think that matching was very important.  Thought that my driver had to match my woods had to match my irons had to match my wedges etc.  I still like to match to a certain extent (will finish out the ping g10s next summer, will purchase a hybrid to match my cleveland launcher driver and 3 wood, and a matching cleveland wedge to go with the 56*, probably 60*) but willing to go with whatever works best for me.

It all depends upon if you are interested in show or results.  I've started with matched sets and usually end up adding and deleting over time. The result is a mismatched set.  It' all whatever works best and what club you feel most confident with. After reaching a decent level of play, a golfer should then consider custom fitted clubs.  Variables such as player height, length of arms ( distance from the wrists to the ground ) swing speed, etc all need to be factored in. Only then will you know whether to use steel shafts, or graphite,  degree of loft, etc.  Even non-brand name, mismatched, but properly suited clubs in the hands of competent players can often result in better scores at the end of the round of golf.    Hope this helps,,,,,, Coach Joe

Jdalton it makes good sense what you posted. I am still learning and glad to hear peoples opinions about golf equipment. It is good to also know as a beginner you will not be laughed off the course for the clubs you have if they don't match. No one likes to feel out of place or uncomfortable. That is why I keep playing in the winter I want to feel more confident once the season begins when there will be people watching waiting and judging me.

Nope, got Nike Woods, Mizuno Irons, Ping Wedges and Putter, all in a Ping Cart Bag.

I used to have Ping Irons in my Nike carry bag, both bags were bought on features I wanted and not make.

Like I said earlier, I'll use what works but each "group" (or whatever you what to call it) of club in my bag match.  The driver is on its own... if I carried more than one FW (I only use a 3W right now) they'd be the same... Irons are on their own... Wedges are all the same... and the putter is on its own.  As far as bag, I'm kind of picky there, either have to be something that matches some piece of equipment in my bag or, if not, by a company that doesn't make clubs at all (i.e. Ogio or Sun Mountain).

I'm not really opposed to matching everything though... If I had money for all new clubs I could easily see myself with an all Titleist bag... I really like the irons and wedges, I love my Scotty and I hit their woods pretty solid too (at least in store).  Mizuno could possibly happen, except I'm not sure about a Mizuno putter.  Other than those two possibilites I really don't think I could match an entire bag.

I don't think I consciously match brands, but I do think that certain brands do certain things well, and that comes into effect. Taylor Made, for instance, makes better woods than Mizuno, but Mizuno makes better irons. That's totally general though, and how the clubs performs is the final determinant.

I know we are in the clubs, grips, etc forum but since the topic is name brands what about the apparel that you wear on the course? Shoes match shirt or hat or whatever fits works.
