So I'm set to most likely get $700 dollar tax return this spring, was going to wait untill I graduated from school to get a new set of Irons as a present, but why wait that long when I can practice with a new set all spring on my college course for free?

I'm planning on going to the golf galaxy in Towson, MD, and i am looking for a new set of game improvement irons. Last year, I was consistently hitting mid to high 80's, only been playing golf for 4 years now. I figure if I get fit correctly, my 6'3 frame  will b finally be able to hit consistent iron shots. I have been living off my wedges and hybrid.

The question is, what irons do you all think would be best for myself?
Been looking at the Titleist AP1's, Nike VR full cavity, and the TM burner plus. Is there any other kind that would be good to test out (because I am testing as many sets as I want, I don't care if I have to go to golfgalaxy 4 times.

thanks for your help!

I would also try the Ping G15 for a more forgiving club or the i15 for a smaller head, but not as forgiving.

I own a pair of nike vr in graphite shafts and personally there awesome but id say go try ever iron you can just because what might work for me or another player might be horrible for yourself but id say try the nike's. ive used the ap1's when i went on vacation and i liked them but they were not a wow or I must have club and the tm's ive only tried them once or twice so they felt ok but i never used them on a course.

I am a bit biased toasted titleist products as my game really improved with my 907D1 Driver and my 906f2 3 wood. I have heard great things about the AP1's and plan on getting a set for myself. I've read that they're a great iron choice for most handicappers as they are forgiving yet workable. My pro had a mixed set of titleist irons, and compared to the ap2's and 710cb's he has, the AP1 looks nice and forgiving. I want to replace my Wilson PI7's with the AP1's soon. Just gotta save up for it. No use in buying something if you can't pay cash for it.

Your desire to change has to be greater than your desire to stay the same.

Take your time and choose what feels the best.

Thanks so far for your thoughts. I'll have to take a look at the new Ping g15. I had read that the g10's got such great reviews when they first came out, so i'm def. going to take my time with this choice. No rushing it, I plan on having these Irons for as long as I can.

Went to the St. Louis Golf Expo on Friday. The Ping rep, who is also a teaching pro, said he plays the G15 as do lots of his students. Said the G15 is quite workable and forgiving. You have some choices for shafts also, the other half  of golf clubs.

This past summer I went to a low-attendance demo day. The Nike rep had me hit the VR Full Cavity and Split Cavity irons. Both models felt good, although I'm not sure I have the swing for the Split Cavity. Again, see what shafts are available. At Friday's Expo, different sales booths had quite a few used and a couple of new Split Cavity sets, so you should be able to get a good price - if that's what you want.

After you test our the different models, don't be surprised if you end up with irons from two different companies which you really like. There's a lot of good irons out there, and you may end up making final choice on looks and set-up. I like my X20s, but I'm sure either the AP1s or one of the Nikes would work fine too, as long as I had the right shaft.

---------------------------------

Note on G10 irons: They get the ball up really, really high. Too high for some middle HDCP players, such as me. Being you are 6-3, you probably have enough natural leverage a mid-trajectory iron might work better for you. But, check it out to be sure.

Iron fittings are free at GG when you buy your irons there so take advantage of that.

You don't need full cavities if you're shooting in the mid 80's. Look at the Nike Vr Pro Combos. Awesome awesome sticks.

i've had nike ignites, r7 irons, and now AP1s and i must say these are by far best quality, feel, and performance than any of the previous, but those are all old models. you really can't go wrong with any titleist iron.

I had the Nike full cavity irons. I really liked them.

Ive since gone to the Adams CB2 forged. But if I were you I would really keep an open mind and try everything. I recommend trying the Adams A7 set. Its a great set and comes with two outstanding hybrids also. I cant help it, Im an Adams convert... Hahaha

In my Ogio bag.

I am also contemplating new sticks.  I have hit almost every brand out there and am likely to decide between the Mizuno MP 53 and MP 63.  Will make the decision soon and get properly fitted for the right shaft / grip.

With that being said, if I were you, i would at least take a look at the Miz line - possibly the JPX 800 or 800 pro (or the 2 I mentioned above).  I would also check out the new Callaway RAZR irons that come out next month.  The do look interesting.

Good luck!

Beat me to it-as good as AP1s are the best choice is the JPX 800 or 800 Pro.  I know there is no "best" choice, but these are the best choice.

I was intrigued when I looked up the new Mizzies line. I had thought abotu them before, but the places I was going to look for clubs at ie dicks sporting goods, don't carry them, but then I decided I might as well spend the time to drive down to GG to get fitted and ahve a larger selection. I currently have a Mizuno in my bag, don't know which one it is, picked it up at a play it again sports because it had an extra 2 inches in length, and i wanted to see what the length did for me. I threw out my other 6 iron and exclusivly use it haha Its a blade, so I don't always hit it quite right, but when I do, damn does that ball fly....

AP1/AP2 or the Ping I15's would be a good fit.

+1 for the mizuno line of irons.  I returned my titleist AP 1 irons because they were not holding up very well.  They performed great but the

quality of the chrome was not up to par.  After 1 month of use they looked like a 2 year old set of irons.  I went with the jpx 800 and find these

perform as well if not better than the AP 1's and the quality of the chrome is more durable.  I couldn't be happier with the jpx 800's.

Check out the new Cobra S3.  I haven't hit them yet, but loved the S2 which I tried at demo day.  The S3 has a great look.

I got new irons this past fall. I went to a course with an out door range and spent a day hitting different clubs. At the time I was playing MP-57s but I needed something more forgiving because I just dont have the time to play a lot anymore.  I went with the intention of getting into another set of mizzys. I hit about 15 diff. sets of irons and bought the one set I didnt want to even look at.  Thats right I went to the dark side , Taylor made.  I am a TM hater, just never liked them. But the burner 2.0 are just incredible, so easy to hit. VERY VERY forgiving in the long irons.  The 3 iron is actually fun to hit, heck I didnt even carry a 3 before.

Just get fit, it makes such a big difference. I'm 6'2" so I'm about your size and ended up with +1/2" and *2 upright.

One more thing, when you go keep an open mind and dont rule out anything.  Also do some homework and get an idea of the going prices.

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
