This sounds like something you might have to do to maintain sanity or something. Do you live on really crappy roads? I never heard my clubs in my car unless I hit a major pot hole.

You swing these things into dirt, sand and rocks. A little bag clatter isn't going to matter. I agree that you should keep them clean however.

My philosophy is that if I use the iron covers when I am travelling and if I haven't used the iron in question, it will stretch the life of the clubs a bit more.  Maybe 11 years instead of 10 for example.  My dad has a set of irons he purchased in 1986 which is still usable today.  Yes, there is rust on the heads and shafts but it is usable.

My previous set of irons that my dad now uses was purchased in 2000 or so and there are no problems with them.

So, maintaining your clubs does matter.

My roads are good, but I find that even on the smoothest tarmac, any sudden movement in the vehicle (acceleration, braking, cornering etc) will cause the clubs to knock into each other (club chatter) so the club covers help prevent some degree of damage.  Consider it like this, your car will survive even if you drive it on bad roads but will survive longer if you drive it carefully on good roads

Bag clatter isn't going to make them unusable. Being from 1986 is. I think you might be a little hyperneurotic with this. I bought 14 year old clubs that played fine and weren't protected by covers. They might be slightly aesthetically more desirable for selling but I think you are wasting your time with covers. Cleaning is imperative however. What ever floats your boat I guess.

Thinking about getting iron covers purely to avoid the clatter noise which drives me nuts and also to try and minimise dings etc. I've read mixed reviews and read that they can cause rust etc. What people's thoughts on this? Apparently neoprane covers are best to get?

I have had iron covers on my last 2 sets of irons. I have Never had a club rust. not even a hint of rust,

I have won a lot more money from golfers that don't use them, than those who do.

That's because so few players good enough to even consider playing for money use them....

    • It’s possible the graphite shaft has a small internal crack or a delamination. Tapping it and hearing a vibrating sound is usually a sign the shaft isn’t behaving as it should. Since the store wasn’t helpful, consider taking it to a club fitter or a pro shop that can check the shaft flex and integrity. If it’s defective, you might be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
    • It’s interesting how much a 3D system changes your understanding. Observing top players in full detail and realizing the trail knee shouldn’t fully extend is a great example of why being open to new info is so important. I like your approach: not trying to be “right,” but trying to teach correctly based on actual evidence. Makes sense why golfers would benefit from this perspective.
    • I would say both are equally not the best for golf. Is it better than nothing, sure.  Golf is an athletic motion. Professional golfers are doing a comprehensive workout routine focusing on strength, power, flexibility, stability. They might include some yoga into the routine. I would put both of them in the recovery bin, not golf enhancement bin.  If you want to increase swing speed, core strength, longevity in golf and life, then lift heavy weights.
