Tiger isn't the only one has has done this...Is it wrong, yes.Β  Is it a unique situation, no.

I would think anyone caught spitting on a green would be brought to task. Spitting elsewhere on the course is not as offensive.

Is he a member of the Euro Tour now?Β  From the article:
The code of conduct states that when a player becomes a member, he "voluntarily submits himself to standards of behaviour and ethical conduct beyond those required of ordinary golfers and members of the public".
He probably will, but I wonder if Woods pays the fine?Β  And what the Euro tour would do if he didnt.

E BO

If he refuses to pay the fine, then I would say total ban from all events over-seas is in order. However I could not imagine him not paying the fine.

I am sure he will payΒ it too.Β  Do you honestly think the Euro tour would ban him from all of their events?Β  Don't you think they would get major heat from the sponsors of the events that Tiger plays?

I wonder if any cultures represented on the European Tour have similar regard for spitting as for serial infidelity?

I disagree.Β  Others have spit on the Greens while on TV with far less reaction from the public than we are seeing now with Tiger.Β  Tiger is news, good news for that matterΒ and people are capitalizing on everything he does for a story to tell or to write.

The only other player who got this much flack was Sergio when he spit into the cup / hole which IMO is worst.

Again, is it wrong, yes.Β  Should others who do the same get as much flack as Tiger, yes.

Should Tiger be held to a higher standard, because he was paid a huge appearance fee by the organizers. I'm not sure but I suspect even Bill Murray would find Tiger and Sergio's behaviour childish and disrespectful.

Other players Β spit, but rarely on the green, and they don't then go and smear it all over the green with their putter. Β He's a real class act, our Tiger. Β It was absolutely disgusting.

The best punishment was the commentator who really stuck the boot in. And rightly so, saying how Tiger can be "petulant and arrogant" and how this act was about "as low as you can go".

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Fairly certain they just take it out of his winnings. The European Tour, like the PGA Tour, just deposits winnings into an account.

Or, this happens all the time and we just don't see it. Not saying it does, just playing devils advocate here.Β Its hard to imagine anyone thinking that's ok unless it's regularly practiced? For all I know, this happens all the time at tournaments and we just don't normally see it. Personally, If I really need to spit, I'm going to spit but I'm not going to do it on the green. Regardless, definitely not a very classy move by Tiger.

What are you kidding? Its basically akin to spitting on your office carpet, or even slamming your club down into the putting surface. I could not imagine hocking a wad even on the worst kept muni green.

I can't imagine myself doing it, but I can certainly imagine it happening considering all the trash I've seen on some greens.

There is a big cultural divide between Europe and USA on this. Spitting is kind of acceptable from what I can tell in the US, although definitely not on the green. In Europe, especially the UK, spitting is seen as the act of a neanderthal. If anyone did it at my club, they would be escorted off the premises without their feet touching the ground.

I see he has now tweeted that he is sorry ... as if anyone actually cares whether he is sorry or not

Got to say, Tiger's general behaviour and demeanour throughout the week was totally abject. I've defended him many times before, including here, but the time has come to call him out for what he is - a miserable, poor loser with nothing else to offer apart from the quality of his game. Watching both Westwood and Kaymer stand there, autographing for children for ages, as opposed to Woods, who signed about 2 things whilst on the move post round. That pretty much summed him up for me. Well, he's just lost a long term fan.

I'm sure Tiger will comtemplate that loss the next time he is in his vault!

Anywhere off the green would have been fine. I've always tried to root for him regardless of his personal dealings, but it just keeps getting harder. He really is just an ahole.

There are plenty of areas about whichΒ to condemn Tiger, but how much he has "donated" is NOT one of them, imo.Β  Whether it's PR-motivated or not, the guy has been responsible for a lot of donations to charity.

Yeah it's pretty nasty to spit on the green but take it for what it is.....a breach in ettiquette by one who's morals has been questioned on a daily basis for the past year and change.Β  This is overblown in my opinion (not to say that I do this).Β  Just take this into consideration, yeah....spitting on the green is bad, but people did #2's in the cup to discourage people of my ilk from playing on the tour....think about it.

Yes, he's done it before along with countless others, but that's no excuse.Β  I don't care for it, mainly because my "manners" I guess are different from his.Β  I would never spew a loogie on the putting green anywhere.Β  In the rough, fairway, trap, wherever else, fine.Β  Spew to your hearts content.Β  Come on Tiger...

    • Imma throw a dart in the dark as no one can tell what is happening once every fourth iron shot per your OP. This might sound counterintuitive but if ball position is too far back in the stance folks are known to throw down clubhead steeply. Could be happening. And yes, @billchaois not wrong; clubhead tends to bottom out wherever your pressure is. So slide forward (not sway), then hit.
