The "good golfer."

Could their be an any more ambiguous definition?

I have an opinion, but I'd prefer to share it later in the discussion. (At least I hope there will be a discussion.)

At what point do you consider a golfer a "good" player?

Simple as that.

Depends on who your talking too, I consider myself ok.  others consider me good, some may say I suck.  I play off a guesstimate of 6-8, lowest round, even par 72 usually 76-82

Insightful, but the question was meant to be interpreted is what level do you consider a "good golfer."  Third person.

Semantically speaking…

Your post is asking for a first person response to a second person interrogative.

Here is my response: A good golfer is someone who can shoot in the 70’s from the tips on a championship course.

It's always going to be subjective based on your personal level as well as the type of players you often play with or encounter on the course.  I think a good player is anyone that breaks 90 on a consistent basis following the rules of golf.  They are certainly in the minority, so I think that justifies the tag of good.

Handicap 10 and below is in my eyes a good golfer from a neutral point of view. Once you get below 15, progressing towards 10, you must have a somewhat consistent swing.

A good golfer is someone who has fun on the course and is respectful of the rules/etiquette/other players. Someone that no matter what their skill level, I would enjoy playing with.

I consider a talented/skilled golfer to be someone who consistently shoots under 85.

As a professional golfer/golf instructor, I consider any player good if they regularly play to a 9 handicap or less from the regular tees.

It seems like it's all kinda relevent, especially when you look at the fact that the majority of golfers fail to beak 100 on a consistant basis.

I play with 2 different groups of friends, one group where I'm consistantly the better player (Mid 90s) and one group where I'm consistantly the worst player(HCs between 10-16). When I play with the first group, am I considered a good player? Probably not, but I consider the guys in the second group to all be good players.

my get up and go musta got up and went..

was just sarcasm, i meant nothing by it...my apologies. to answer your question, i'd say a good golfer who shoots in the 70's consistently and touches low 80's maybe 1/5 rounds...

There is an old saying that would address this question.  It is "what you see depends upon where you stand".  From my perspective anyone that can consistently score in the 80s or lower is a pretty good golfer.

On an earlier thread someone published some statistics from the National Golf Foundation on the distribution of golf scores across the US.  If I recall less than 50% of the golfers in the US can consistently break 100 and less than 20% can consistently break 90.  But that is just my recollection and you might find the older thread and look it up.

Score wise I'd say someone who regularly shoots in the low 80s and occasionally in the 70s. (This from a 13.)

Personally though I'd say that anyone with good golf etiquette, that maintains a good pace, and has a pleasant attitude, is a good golfer.

I think that if you can keep up the pace of play and not slow anyone down, you are a good golfer regardless of your handicap.

It's hard to say that "X" handicap is a skilled golfer.  It's not really what this game is about to me.  A 15 handicap can have a good match against a scratch golfer because of the handicap system.

That said, as a 6 handicap I still feel like I am not that good of a golfer.  I can skank the ball just as well as the 20 handicap, I just do it less often.

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
