if you play a pitch and putt course you should still tee it up.

I don't on the pitch and putt (holes ranging from 48 to 85 yards) because I'll drop 4 or 5 balls on the mat and just go.

Well I think it comes without question why they use them. It gives them the perfect lie everytime they tee it up. You are not suppose to tee it up that much. Just enough to give you a perfect lie.

Amateurs should benefit even more because many casual golfer do not have the correct shaft lean at impact so teeing up also allows them to use their swing even it it is a flip.cast and still get it on the sweet spot albeit they still arent compressing the ball like they could.

I"m sure lots of people play sub 5000

You think mats and grass tees are the same?
A fat shot on grass still gets in the air on mats
sure you can feel it but a high capper isnt gonan think that
they're gonna see it go in the air and be like nice shot

If you're treating the round as practice, then by all means, play it from the turf. I don't tee up my iron shots on the range, and it's the same thing. But if you're playing for an actual score, then the above discussion applies: tee it up.

I don't agree with the range mats V grass thing.

Hitting off of mats can hide the fact that you are hitting the ball fairly fat. The mat will give and allow you to still hit a descent looking, straight shot.....however, off of grass, that same shot would have the divot going farther than the ball. There is a reason the pros dont hit off mats.......

99% of people hit balls on the range with their irons off of the grass/mats and then tee one up on a par 3 and struggle with control. Play how you practice and how you are most comfortable. If I saw a guy jumping up and down on one leg hitting great shot after great shot on the course I wouldn’t do it ‘cause he did it. I would practice it religiously and then if I saw improvement by doing it that way, I would do it that way on the course. Golf is supposed to be fun. Don’t try to copy what everyone else does, have fun your own way within the parameters of good sportsmanship and proper etiquette.

Any time I can use a tee, I do. On Par 3's where I use an iron, or a long par 3 where I might use a three wood, I tee it up just off the ground as was mentioned earlier. Why not give yourself a perfect lie 18 times a round? Any time I use a club other than a driver with a tee, I use a broken one I find on the tee box.

how can you not feel fat shots regardless of ball flight or grass or matt...?

also, sure, given a choice between matts and grass, pro's will pick grass...but in the case pro's only have matt access to practice, if they would practice or not. 100% will say YES PRACTICE OFF MATTS.

I always use a tee b/c I am not that good of iron player. It gives you a little margin of error and if you have a hard time taking a good divot it can help you find the center of the club face. I always tee it up if I can. With short clubs, not a big deal, but when I am hitting a long iron, hitting it higher is the way to hit it farther.

The tee gives you a perfect lie. The whole ball is exposed and should be easier to hit and get going. Irons are the best part of my game, but I tee up on every par 3. I do have trouble hitting a ball teed up high. So, when I'm hitting anything but driver, I find a tee stub and jam it almost all the way into the ground, just so the ball sits completely exposed.

I use a tee on every tee box. If I'm hitting sand wedge or five iron, I use a tee; exactly as imtomtomim said, only to create the perfect lie.

driver: FT-i tlcg 9.5˚ (Matrix Ozik XCONN Stiff)
4 wood: G10 (ProLaunch Red FW stiff)
3 -PW: :Titleist: 695 mb (Rifle flighted 6.0)

putter: Studio Select Newport 1.5

I'm tempted to simply drop the ball and hit directly off the grass

For many years, I did not use a tee with any club, including my driver. I would just take a ball, drop it on the grass and take a vicious rip at it.

So I would say do whatever works for you.

So, What I'm saying is this:

On a par 3 hole at the tee, one where you'd use an iron, do you tee up the ball?

Driver: :cobra: BiO Cell (10.5º)

Wood: :ping: G15 3 (15.5°)

Hybrids: :callaway: Diablo Edge: 3 (21º), 4 (24º)

Irons: :callaway: Diablo Edge: 5-PW

Wedges: :cleveland:588 RTX CB 50º, Paradise Black Chrome II Sand Wedge 56º

    • Day 137 - Upper back was tight today so I did some more pitching work. Really working on letting the club fall instead of forcing it.
    • Day 39: Same thing as previous post, with a 5-iron for about 15 minutes. Feel pretty good about progress so far, so spent another 20+ minutes working on short game shots, which I have been really struggling with on course lately.
    • Day 316: mirror work for a while. Working on getting my hips more open and my hands down faster in the downswing.
    • My short game is no longer a dumpster fire. It’s bordering on being the best part of my game at this point. I still need to stay out of the bunkers but I’m starting to hit shots to makeable distances (if only I could putt). I’ve pretty much gotten the three releases down. My feels for the releases: Drive the handle forward. I haven’t used this one too much lately. Left hand pulls the club. This is my standard motion. Right hand pushes the club. I use this occasionally for flop shots. I’m still in the process of learning how the ball reacts on the green with different shots so there’s plenty of room for improvement. The contact is clean so I’ll be able to dial it in with experience. The most important thing is to slow my tempo down. Way down. I need to bring the club back slowly so that momentum doesn’t put the clubhead in weird places. Not trying to create lag around the greens. Full swing has kind of fallen off but I haven’t practiced much lately. I’ll probably try to get some time in before the Ohio outing.
    • Day 146: 5/21/24 Putting through gates for distance control and chipping practice indoors.
