WOW this kid got robbed of an ace in a competition!  i don't think i have ever seen anyone play slow enough to penalize their ace!!! like some one in the article said he would have had to lay down and take a nap before i could make that call.  have you guys ever heard of such a thing?????

Keep it where the mowers go!

Seems good to me. Junior players are S-L-O-W. I'm all for enforcing pace of play policies.

I really, really dont understand how some golfers play slow. I can play 9 holes in 50 mins to an hour without anyone on the course, and still shoot a good score.

If he was the slow one, I bet it's lesson learned. If he wasn't slow, but had to wait repeatedly on a fellow competitor in the group, it's a travesty.

No Erik.  Slow players are S-L-O-W!  Juniors are J-U-N-I-O-R-S that learn slow play from adults and the Tour Players they watch on TV.

Most Juniors at my club play quickly and complain about the old farts plumb-bobbing every putt.

Still an ACE, just scored as a birdie.  kinda sux, but if the group ahead were on the 6th green or 7th tee box when he hit the shot, and had been warned ALREDY prior to the 5th hole,, shame; but the rub of the rules.

IMO Golf has NEVER been a speed sport, Where I work we require a 2 hour per 9 hole round, If it is cart path only maybe 2:10 or 2:15.

Not hard to plat 9 holes of golf on a crowded course in 2 hours or less.

No. Slow players are slow. Junior players can be just as fast as anyone else, you know. In fact, I've seen junior(13-14 year olds) 3 balls play rounds in under 3 hours when nobody is in front of them.

sorry guy, ACE means "1", it was a hole out from the tee.  Unfortunate

They had already received a warning and penalty by the fifth hole? They must've really been dragging their feet.

Definitely a hole-in-one. One swing, holed out. It's about the action, not the recorded score. Regardless of the term, he scored a hole-in-one that was penalized by the committee outside of the manner in which he conducted his swing. Once a legal hole-in-one occurs, you can't "take it away"; it's already happened.

Nope, junior players are slow. I stand by that. By and large, overall, juniors are the slowest people out there. They take everything so seriously, have to go through their checklist, have their routines, get distracted, and don't have a clue what "ready golf" is or how it works. Slow play has been increasing, and as new players enter the game, they are increasingly failed to be educated on how to play at an appropriate pace.

Duh "slow people are slow." That's a pretty pointless thing to say. Of course there are fast juniors and slow seniors. But the average pace of play of juniors is slower in similar settings than it is with any other age group. It's a generalization, folks, and you might not like 'em, but they're true.

I think everyone - everyone - deserves a kick in the ass. Get going. Hit the damn ball. Juniors need to see how to play quickly. I was taught - or learned on my own - how to play quickly. I know where to leave my bag, where to park the cart, how to do as much as I can before I hit my shot so I can fire pretty quickly after the previous guy's ball stops moving (or before, if it's a casual round i.e. ready golf). Everyone needs to speed up.

What was even more interesting was that the original article (here) indicates that all 3 players appealed the ruling and the other two player's penalties were changed and his is the only one that stood.  It doesn't say why, though.

Quote:
The three players appealed to USGA officials. Klein turned out to be the only player penalized, so his score of one became a two.

I believe that's fairly standard procedure and the intended result is that if one or two of the three people are responsible, then the players who tried to play fast won't be penalized. In other words, the committee must have decided that the one guy was solely responsible for the slow play, or responsible enough that he shouldered the burden all by himself.

Similar things have happened in U.S. Am qualifying, I believe, last year perhaps. I think two of the three players got a penalty. And the LPGA Tour has doled out some penalties too.

Semantics!  A HIO is an ACE...meaning ONE shot! Now put your feet in this kids shoes..."Hey TomTom, have you ever had an ACE"?  No, I holed one out from the tee for a birdie"  C'mon, be honest, you may have explained the birdie, but indeed an ACE!  SHoot, I'd go buy myself a HIO trophy!!  If it were a provisional, then I'd HAVE to say NO..IT WAS A HOLE OUT FROM THE TEE! this was an ACE...w/a penalty!  bet old Connor moves out smartly the next time he plays tho!

Have you guys ever played with someone that is horribly slow? Now imagine if he was warned about being so slow previously.. and then on one hole he continues to take his time, yet manages to shoot a hole-in-one. Don't you think a penalty is in order, regardless of the circumstances? I don't think I'd let the guy celebrate one bit.. Great hole-in-one birdie dude..

People seem to be giving him some sort of credit and i'm guessing its either, 1) for being young, or 2) for getting a hole-in-one. Yet they disregard the fact that he was warned and was clearly the guilty party in the group.

He isn't entitled to anything but a lesson learned.

I am seeing some irony in this. Maybe he was the slowest of the group, but then he get's penalized on the hole where he certainly was the quickest of the group. Maybe he should have tried to use that as an indication that he tried to catch up...

I thought it was odd that the article didn't explain any of that.  I agree, there should be some recourse so all players don't get penalized for one person being slow.  Yes, he could've been the one who 'caused' most or all of the slow play, but as one of the other posters said, he did apparently try to speed things up (unless he took too much time celebrating?).

    • Day 335 - More putting work, with the focus on setup and hitting the sweet spot.
    • Day 153: putted for a while using the 2 cups drill inside. Working on bead primarily. Contact was really good.
    • Day 8: 12/17/2024 Okay I took my new PPJ swing thought to the range today. I wasn't sure I was quite ready to do so, but I'm glad I did.  When I got it right it was good... really good. When I got it wrong it was a major fail. I hit lots of really ugly ones. But I didn't let that deter me. I stayed committed and focused on the PPJ and I avoided any temptation to go back to what I was doing before just so that I could "look" better at the range. I'm pretty excited about what I saw when I got it right.  I hit the 6 iron mostly (nearly all block work today). I also hit about 6 balls each with the PW, 8I, 5W and Driver. Those had varying degrees of success. I did crack one drive that let me feel and see what the changes will look like once I get fully trained.  Anyway, I'm going to go back to the mirror work for a couple of more days before bringing it back to the range. I do feel like if I can get this right my swing will improve a lot. So I think its worth the effort. I liked the way it looked on GEARs when I get it right, and I like the results I got at the range when I got it right. Now the goal is to work towards getting it right more often.
    • So I think it's that they can't just bend the shaft or hosel to get it to a new lie angle. They adjust that and it changes the weighting, so they have to then adjust all the weights to get it balanced again. I get the impression that it's a bit of an iterative process and they do it all in the US, so they're paying US labor costs to build it and make it work how it's supposed to. Whether you believe in the tech or not, I think that's a true statement.
