Tiger as Captain's pick for Pres. Cup?

What are your thoughts on Couples thinking about picking up Tiger for the President's cup?

I disagree with Fred picking him as his 'captain's pick'.  You don't field a second string player just because of their past history.  There are many more golfers that have their game in better shape then Tiger's and will get better results.

He should be looking at some of the rookies or young guns that bring some excitement to the game.

I am sure it is a very political position that Couples is in and Tiger has to be picked for many reasons that don't make sense on paper.  None the less, I don't feel that Tiger will make an impact on the team.  Who knows, perhaps this is what Tiger needs to find the fire again.

Bad Idea.  I'm a fan of Tiger, but he isn't playing well enough now to have any business being on the team.

I agree Bubba..

However, as one poster mentioned, the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup are more like All-Star publicity events then they are real competitions..  A ton of politics comes into play, and it's all about ratings and money then it is about the sport and winning.. Maybe it's why we have such a hard time beating the Euro's.. But this is a weaker field with the international and we normally win, so I guess we can afford to toss in some 2nd stingers.. LOL

You know it's a social fun event when one of your Cpt Assistants is Michael Jordon!.. However, I know that Freddie and Mike are good personal friends.. I am a little curious tho about the comment Fred made that Tiger has to play more?  Play what events?

In Europe and/or Asia. As another poster detailed in another thread, there are plenty of events overseas that Tiger could (and if he wants to play in the Presidents Cup, should) play.

I hear that sometimes there are events outside the USA. I thought that was crazy...but I googled it and found out it was true. It blew my mind.

Tiger will be on the team if he wants and will have plenty of motivation. The International team is currently a 6:5 favorite. Adam Scott (ie Stevie Williams), is a lock to be on the International Team. Tiger has a good track record in the President's Cup (13-11) and has played well in Australia (Australian Masters). I can't fault Freddie for choosing Tiger, but I'd choose Bradley, Woodland, and Haas first.

Are you that much of a fanboy to not detect sarcasm? lmao   C'mon people.. Have you checked the dates on when the Austrian Open is?  Same weekend as the Tour championship..  Like Tiger will have any real challenge there.. It'll be interesting to see what scrub events he signs up for..

How does my above post make me a fanboy? A fanboy of what? ( I was also being sarcastic, by the way)

Funny also that you pick the weakest event over the next few months on the Euro Tour to prove a point.

He could/should play the Omega European Masters (Westwood, Kaymer, McIlroy etc all playing). But that's just a scrub event I suppose...

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is also a prestigious tournament and will feature 3 of the worlds top 5 also.

Another option would be The KLM open (Also will feature 3 of the worlds top 5, I see a trend here)

Perhaps a few Fall series events would be a nice warmup also if he doen't feel like travelling across the Atlantic and playing against players who wouldn't give "any real challenge" to him.

You talk about quality Euro events.. Is Tiger entered into them at this time?  NO..  So lets wait and see what he actually (if any) he plays in and what he does.. Instead of giving him the win already like you just did..  Have a great day.. I have steaks to cook now

"Instead of giving him the win"? Who said I think he would win these events? The way he is playing he wouldn't even make the cut in all likelihood. All I said is that these events across the pond have good fields (Which you seemed to dismiss with your previous post), and that they would be good events to play if he wants to play a few tournaments.

Cheerio. Enjoy your steaks.

Couples has said that he needs Tiger to play more in order to convince him to pick him.  IMO, the way Tiger is playing now there is no reason why he should be the captain's pick.  Face it, Tiger isnt the best player in the world anymore.  The Tiger of old is gone and we havent really seen anything that would make us believe that he is coming back to dominance any time soon.

Tiger was in bad form going into the Ryder Cup, but played well.

Tiger's record at the Pres. Cup is very good, he has a lot of experience which also helps beyond golf.

Don't see an issue with picking him.

I don't think it matters who is playing in the events and how tough the competitors are.  Tiger needs to play in events period to get reps in under tournament conditions. I don't see an issue with Tiger being picked as long as he gets more reps in first.  Like the above poster stated, he would bring a great deal of experience to the table which is just as valuable as playing well for some. Maybe being picked and feeling the support from his fellow players is the spark he needs to get to good form. IMO, he is close to being there anyway.

I guess I think Tiger has done enough for golf that he deserves "one freebie" if he wants to play the President's Cup.   I don't believe his current play earned him a Captain's pick so this would be charity and not sure Tiger would accept such an offer.

Best thing that could happen to Tiger is that Freddy commits to him and says he will be on the team......Tiger is a very, very proud person and I think the will absolutely be 'ready' to play well at the President's Cup........With all this 'should he, shouln't he' talk, I think that gives Tiger a little "told ya so" motivation......

He will play....he will play very well......

Would be a pity if he misses it. Anyone remember the Tiger - Ernie playoff for the cup in 2003 in South Africa? That was epic. Actually, Ernie is also quite lucky to be at this one. If the OWGR wasn't so back weighted ...

I think if Tiger had any class he would notify Freddie that he wants his name withdrawn from considertation. His game is nowhere close to being good enough to deserve to be on the team.I don't think it's fair for Freddie to have to be under any pressure at all to select Tiger. You should base your selections on the how well a player has played in the last 12 months.

True, but he has 3ish months to get ready

    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
