I finally got one right!  I've got a ton of respect for a bounce back like that, and feel the pain of a steamrolled Levin.

I was impressed up through yesterday but think he did a poor job with his emotions today.  And of course thought it was tacky that he was walking around smoking.  Actually the first time I have seen it other than Daly.

Well shorty I hope you're eating a little humble, pie after last week's "no sympathies" post.

The kid's a gamer and a class act!

Not at all. I am really impressed with his performance this week. Seems like a great guy too. Couldn't happpen to a nicer guy.

I still don't like caddies trying to hog limelight and lining players up.  It's a bad look, but this week I forgive him.

Beats watching Webb Simpson's caddy trying to hog screen time.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

He's not the first guy to lose a big lead in the last round of an event, and he surely won't be the last.  He played some great golf this week, but it just a poor round.  Maybe he'll never win a PGA Tour event or maybe he'll win a major someday, but a guy that can go 65-63-68 is definitely no hack.

Spencer is a tough competitor.  I played some amateur golf with him in Northern Cal a few years back and I tried to recruit him to play for USF when he left UCLA.  Same exact swing and swagger we saw last week.  The only difference is the temper has gotten better.  He was always friendly to me so we got along fine, though I'd be surprised if he remembers me lol

I personally never thought he would be good enough to play on tour, don't get me wrong he was always the guy to beat but the PGA tour is a whole other level.  He always had the best short game but I thought he hit it too low and a little short to compete out there.  So I'm happy he proved me wrong and is cashing some nice checks out there.  He'll come back from thie

He didn't have to play from it, he could have declared it an unplayable lie and dropped under penalty.

I agree, you could see the pressure was getting to Levin by the end.  I think smoking made his nerves worse, as those last 4 or 5 holes he seemed to constantly have a cigarette in his hands when he wasn't swinging a club.  Definitely not a good image for the sport or youth watching.

I'll have to take your word for it. When I saw who was(n't) in contention, I decided not to record it.

I agree Brandon, this type of behaviour has no place in professional sports. So embarrassing, I couldn't watch more than 10 seconds of it.

I agree with both of those.

If they make it a Wasted Management only tradition, crank it up ... but it would be tragic if it permeated into other tournies and golf in general.

And I was thinking the same thing about the white noise.

It's always been a mystery to me why guys like Tiger, who seem to get very upset at the slightest camera click, seem able to ignore noises from birds, frogs, cars, planes, trains, etc. I've never heard a camera as loud or jarring as a crow, let alone a train whistle. And if it does bother them, why not put on some headphones with white noise playing? Is there a rule against that?

There is now, new rules prohibit prolonged use of headphones for the purpose of blocking out noise.

Rule 14-3

Wearing Headphones or Earplugs During Stipulated Round

Q. May I wear headphones or earplugs while playing in the state amateur?

A.

The use of headphones or earplugs to eliminate noise or other distractions is prohibited under Rule 14-3.

Decision 14-3/16 covers listening to music or some other broadcast during a round. Here is the text of that Decision:

Rule 14-3a states that a player may not use any artificial device or unusual equipment that “might assist him making a stroke or in his play.” Listening to music or a broadcast while making a stroke or for a prolonged period might assist the player in his play, for example, by eliminating distractions or promoting a good tempo. Therefore, the use of an artificial device to listen to music or a broadcast, whether or not through headphones, while making a stroke or for a prolonged period of time during a stipulate round is a breach of Rule 14-3. However, it would not be a breach of Rule 14-3 for a player to listen to a device briefly, for example, to obtain the results of another sporting event or traffic information, while walking between the putting green of one hole and the teeing ground of another hole.

There is no restriction on listening to music or other broadcasts while practicing (whether on the practice ground or on the golf course, and whether by oneself or while playing with others), although club rules and disciplinary codes could apply in such circumstances.

newtogolf, Thanks for posting the rule about headphones. The part about gaining information, though, brings up another question. The big names usually have a TV announcer following them around, and they can and do ask him what's happening elsewhere --- what was that roar for; what is Phil's score; how many shots back am I? The no-names can look at the scoreboards, but they might be several minutes behind real time. Seems like that gives an unfair advantage. As for the noise thing, I wonder if a really dedicated golfer might deliberately hang around jet engines or something to naturally ruin his hearing. Don't laugh --- there was a survey done some time back that asked Olympic athletes if they would take an undetectable drug that would guarantee a gold medal, but would also shorten their life by several years, and a surprisingly high number said yes.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
