I've never seen anything close to this, best wishes for a full recovery.

I'm guessing we won't hear much more in the way of details on this for fear of pending lawsuits.  It should never get to this.

It's not that hard to fathom, beer muscles cause people to do stupid things.  I'd guess it started as a insult shouting match until someone had their feelings hurt and then it was "go time".

I've gotten relatively upset on a course a couple times, and I have a very stoic demeanor.  I could easily see some of my buddies getting into fights under certain circumstances.  A few months ago I was playing with a group of strangers and the group behind us hit into us twice.  Course was packed, nowhere to go, and it was totally uncalled for.  I could see it happening, but then I always remind myself that it isn't worth it.

i've seen my fair share of *******s out on the course.  my feeling is that golf is like a dr.'s waiting room.  if you demand faster play, be there first in the morning.  3:30p??  again, like a dr. office, expect to wait due to all the build up of people in front of you.

Road rage, bar fights, you name it and one thing people have always been good at is being stupid.

I'm a member of a league with a lot of retirees.  You'd be surprised how many of those guys routinely carry a gun in their bag.  It can make sense when you think about it because a lot of urban courses run through bad neighborhoods.  I've even heard of guys being held up on the golf course and whenever something like that happens you can bet course regulars take whatever precautions they deem necessary.  I also think that older golfers might feel threatened if they got into some kind of verbal exchange with a group of younger guys, and as others in this thread have said disagreements on the course, while not the norm, do happen.  The truth is you face this situation anywhere.  You never really know who it is you're messing with.  Sometimes it's someone like you who is irritated and just thinks they are sticking up for themselves.  But sometimes the dude you're messing with is having a really bad day and happens to like the idea of taking that out on someone else.  As long as it remains the typical shouting and shoving match then no big deal, but there are people in the world who feel like their life is up against it and they've got nothing to lose.  That's the guy you might not want to ride too hard, and you can't always figure out who that guy is until he goes postal on you...

I'm surprised by the article that the police aren't pressing assault and obstruction charges against everyone involved for not coming clean about what took place.

So 0.1 percent of the daily arguments go this far? That seems like a lot.

Quote from article: "People get in arguments every day on every golf course in America," Carpenter said. "But 99.9 percent of the time no one takes it this far."

I can see a guy I "met" on Saturday being involved in something like this. We showed up at Golf Town at the same time 9:00 AM and as he was checking his watch and pulling clubs out of his car, I assumed the 09:00 AM lesson I had was double booked. When I asked if he was there for a lesson he took offense to my question and within ~ 20 words I felt threatened. Our encounter was only one hotheaded weirdo short of a brawl.

There is a lack of detail in the article, but I don't think that necessarily means the participants have not been forthcoming to the police.  The police may just be filtering what they share until things are sorted out and charges are filed.

Interestingly, within the last hour the article has been changed to omit the name of the victim, which was originally there, as he "did not want to be identified for fear of retaliation". Retaliation for what, I wonder?

Also interesting is that the victim may have had the upper hand when he was stabbed: "The victim said he was astride his attacker's body when the man stuck the golf shaft through his leg..."

I'm not saying I think this happened, and I certainly feel bad for the man with the injury, but even before the article was changed I had thought to myself, "Hmm, for all we know the victim started the fight and was stabbed in self defense."

Yup, I'm pretty surprised that this kind of stuff doesn't happen more often.  I played a round once where the group behind us just kept hitting into us as we waited for the guys on the greens to finish up.  After a few random holes of this, my bud jumped into our cart and went back to tell them to knock it off.  Right as we pulled up, one of their players jumped out of his cart, grabbed a club and headed directly towards us.  My buddy started to get out of the cart when I grabbed him and said, "Keep seated."  At that point, he simply told them that we're waiting too, so please stop hitting into us.  On the very next hole, we're sitting there next to the tee box with two other groups waiting (it was a par 5, so that tells you how bad the back up was).  These yo-yos pull up behind us, see all the groups and start cursing and screaming.  One of them throws in cart in reverse and stomps on the accelerator.  Well, he goes too far and backs down a gulley and gets his cart stuck.

Another time, one of my buds was playing his first round after he had both knees replaced.  So, the course gave him a handicap flag so that he could go a little closer to the tees and greens.  At one of the tee boxes, he parked his cart several yards off the path, but still more than 30 feet away from any tee box.  As we're leaving the tee, we hear a player yelling from the green next to our tee box.  As we approach our carts, the guy looks at us and says, "So you guys think you own the place?  You think you can park your cart wherever you damn well please?"  My bud points to the handicap flag on his cart and asks, "Do you know what this means?"  The guy says, "No."  My bud replies, "Well, maybe you should learn.", and we drive off.

Very plausible. I remember my father telling me a story about his friend back in the 1970s. The guy was in a road rage incident where the other guy was beating the living crap out of him, so he stabbed the guy in the neck with the car anttena. His friend was eventually cleared of all civil and criminal charges because all witnesses said it was self defense.

I worked 5 years as a prison guard and have spent the last 10 working as an ER nurse.

I can say one thing with certainty. People are capable of anything. Don't write checks your arse can't cash.

You just never know when some crazy fool is in your midst.

Sad stuff. Truly.

I saw a fight on a golf course once. A guy rammed his cart into the one in front of him, thinking it was his buddy. The guy in front was pretty steamed, but it was a total baseball fight. Some shoving, a couple missed punches, shirts and hats all messed up, but nothing too bad. • Played Musgrove Mill today. 72.3/155. +9 for 15 official holes as 2 holes are closed, and the par 5 16th plays as a converted par 3. We played the first three holes over to finish 18, and parred 1 and2 amped bogeyed 3. The good: hit every fairway. 1 less than normal for the converted par 3, but the second time I have done that this year. My sand wedge approach on 10 after a monster drive hit the pin in the back left corner hit he pin and spun away to 9’, and I missed the putt.   The great: hit 8 GIR and 7 were inside 10’. Needs work: Missed every birdie putt. No lip-outs. Just struggled on fast greens. Three-putted the par-5 9th with the pin on the back tier and jut missed hitting my approach to the proper level and it spun all the way to the front of the green.
