Or Sensory Awareness! I'm looking forward to getting back onto the fairways this season and working hard on some fun awareness exercises that quickly improve my golf swing. There are many that I use but my favourite is probably the drill I call, 'seeing the arc'. I usually do this with a nine iron at first and start by swinging the club without a ball. At first I intentionally don't make contact with the turf and swish the club slightly above it. My first task is to be aware of the path the club head is following. For me this is 'In to Out' and I will adjust this until its something between 3-5°. I will then turn my attention to the club face and heighten my awareness by specifying if the face is open prior to impact and progressively closing through this arc. Once I can pick up these fine details, I will begin swishing my club through the turf and expect to see the path and face details every bit as clear. Normally this takes at most 5-10 swings to master and I also get up to my desired swing speed. I now add a ball to the equation and also use some feedback numbers. I take a practice swing and from 1-5 rate how well I was able to see the arc through impact with the grass and also the club head conditions. With the practice swing this is normally a 5. Now I address the ball, take a swipe at it and what usually happens is my awareness for seeing these two conditions drops to a 1 or 2. What's wrong with my eyes? The swing without a ball, I can see everything crystal clear but with it as part of the process, I begin experiencing levels of blindness. Why? Its simple really, my concentration has been diverted to swing results, e.g. the ball's flight, instead of what I intend to experience. I do however persevere and before too long I can see the arc clearly with the ball. When I get to this stage my ball striking reaches very satisfactory levels. However, have I been working on improving my swing? Definitely! I have subconsciously given my body the task of creating a swing path between 3-5° in to out and of being alert to the angle of the club face through impact. As I am a sweeper, any deep divots will obscure the clarity of these conditions. This drill is a very effective learning tool and because a high level of awareness is required, deep lasting learning takes place. I have been working with these awareness drills for many years and I also use them when I am playing on the course. This video has some good slow motion stuff with a driver and nine iron showing the arc and conditions I am able to see at top speed... P.S. There is also some rubbish on it but the slow motion stuff is OK

LMAO....I think this going to be a really fun thread!!

Yea I do this all the time too.  I sometimes push the wrong button on my disembobulator doo dad configuratior and accidently gives me xray vision instead of slow motion.  Might have to send it back to get another one.

Wow, what a fantastic way to spend 3:36. Very enlightening, which part was the rubbish bit again?

You know, Fred Shoemaker wrote a pretty interesting book about this type of approach, but somehow he managed to do it without coming off as an a-hole.

You need to work on your delivery, and I'm not talking about your golfswing.

You mean watching his swing in slow motion over and over didn't teach you anything?  Also that backswing is a little to upright might want to flatten it some.

Fred wrote two books on this actually and also Timothy Gallwey. Was my delivery too complicated for you or unclear? I'm not sure which part makes me sound like you, (an a-hole). So you can see an angle of 3º different from parallell at the point where you would hit the ball by the swish of a club through the grass? A clubhead moving at perhaps 90 miles per hour. And the face angle of the club during the swing? At which point is it 3º? At the start, some part in the middle, toward the end, or just a medium of the entire swish?

You're right I do need to get onto the course but I don't understand why you would want to tear your eyes out.
how in gods name is this guy still around?
What? Do I want to know you?
So you can see an angle of 3º different from parallell at the point where you would hit the ball by the swish of a club through the grass? A clubhead moving at perhaps 90 miles per hour. And the face angle of the club during the swing?
Yes 3-5° but its not an exact science. I land shots with my 9 iron at a 125 metre marker on the driving range but I don't lose sleep if its really only 122 metres. I tend to swing too much from in to out and my simple aim is to reduce this path to less than 5°. I have carried out plenty of NJF exercises with this drill and am fairly accurate at estimating this path. Its not difficult to see at even the fastest of club head speeds. Seeing open or closed face angles are quite clear once you get the hang of blocking out other non specified criteria. I see more precise criteria than this with this drill
At which point is it 3º?
You're obsessed with 3° although I clearly said somewhere between 3-5°, you do however seem happy to accept the exact directions issued in the NBFL. I hope I have at least made this simple awareness drill clearer.
Enjoy your thread. Every time I see a new thread with his name on it I have the exact same thought. Thing is when he is banned he creates aliases and posts that way. So it is one of those things where it is better to deal with the devil you know rather than the devil you don't. One thing is for sure, you must admire Patrick's sticktoitiveness.

Many of the threads on TST are dull, some are just answered with a link to another thread, many are - yawn - about equipment, but my threads are a little out there. E.g. I would definitely have won the Kickstarter award for March if I hadn't been banned and Penalty boxed for most of the month. To rub salt into my wounds, they even locked my favourite and most viewed threads. I enjoy discussing golf and as far as I know there isn't a better board on the internet for doing this than TST. I'm sure if you all keep complaining about my opinions I will probably get banned again but after next Friday, if my course is open by then, my presence will be very infrequent. I work all day every day. Believe it or not my students enjoy learning from 'inside-out.'

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…
    • TV ratings  continue to drop. Stop the endless wiggles and waggles.
    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
