I my catch flak but it seems to me that Jack was a little disappointed that TIGER tied his record...

Now, I make that statement knowing that the "greatest" golfer to have ever played "the game" would not want to see his record tied/broken, I got it! Most will say that "records are made to be broken" but I know no one ever wants to see their record broken...

Was I the only one who looked at Jack and thought that? Maybe he was just exhausted after the tournament...

When they mentioned it to Jack on air yesterday that Tiger could tie his record he seemed completely unaware.  I'm sure he was a bit bummed that he will soon drop a slot in the record books.  He seemed very gracious towards Tiger at 18, even called Tigers shot at 16 the best he ever saw on that course and hole.

I don't think Jack was disappointed. Jack even said during the post round press conference - sitting beside Tiger... That he knew Tiger would do it, and was happy that he did it at the Memorial versus somewhere else. Jack has a lot of respect for Tiger. It's evident in his post round interview IMO.

I would chalk it up more to just being 72 years old & it being a long day.

I dunno but I kind of thought Jack kept criticizing Tiger. I think he could've played at the hole there, I think that shot was the most risky shot ever, etc...

No I think any human would be a bit sad to see their own record broken, but Jack probably takes at as well as anyone possibly could.

FWIW, it didn't seem that way to me. They shook hands right after Woods came off 18 and they showed them chatting later as well.

Tiger got #71 in 2009, so Jack had plenty of time to reconcile himself to Tiger passing him. Jack actually got a couple of bonus years at solo 2nd in career PGA wins, so I don't see why he would be bummed about it happening now. It now seems pretty likely that Tiger is going to go back to averaging five wins a year, so Snead's record is also doomed. I thought Tiger was sticking it to Jack a bit, when he kept hinting how much faster he got to 73 than Jack. But he's right, he got there faster, and he did it the hard way. He could have had 100 wins by now if he had played a lot of weak-field events, like Snead, or Vijay. Instead, he's averaged only about 16 events a year, and except for the old Buick Open, which was a sponsor thing, they were generally the toughest fields of the year.

I watched the exchange on 18 and the post-round presser, and Jack seemed very complimentary.  He was classy as always and seemed genuinely appreciative that it happened at his tournament.  I didn't really get a hint of any sour grapes, although I could understand if a competitor such as Jack showed some slight disappointment publicly.

Jack sarcastically said "[Tiger] had to rub my face in it" at the beginning of the presser; a reference to Tiger doing it at his (Jack's) tournament, but it was just a joke and met with laughter.  It seemed like a pretty comfortable and good moment for both.

I saw the same thing, Jack was pure class and Tiger was respectful and appreciative of what Jack had to say.  As I said earlier and others have said, it had to be a bit semi-sweet for him to know he wasn't alone at #2 and would likely soon be #3.  No competitor wants to see their life achievements surpassed so I can imagine that Jack was a bit saddened by Tigers accomplishment, especially given how many #2's Jack had in his career.

Mr. Nicklaus looked worn out and older than his age today. Jack, the ultimate competitor, wants to host the best tournament he possibly can. I'm sure he was up early all four days in a jacket and tie shaking hands, appeasing the media, spending time with players, politicking in warm, sunny, humid conditions on a hilly golf course. My advice would be for him to take a few days off, then start joining Mr. Player in the fitness trailer.

No. Jack was not disappointed. In fact I would imagine he was glad it was done at his tournament. The ratings must have been very good with Tiger in the mix. It was just a matter of time before he tied it, what better place to do it.

First, I agree that Jack is way too classy to root against Tiger tying or breaking his records.  Also regarding the 73 tour wins, Jack knew that was going to happen sooner or later and was probably happy they could share the moment at his course/tournament.

I don' think Jack cared one way or the other about Tiger tying his number of wins. I don't think Tiger cared either. This was something overblown by CBS. Jack's goal was to win majors, the same for Tiger. While winning tournaments is of course why they play, winning majors is what the Pro game is all about. What's amazing is that Tiger is only 36 and has 73 wins on the PGA Tour. He may end up with over 100. And he wins 25% of the tournaments he enters. Holy crap that's amazing.

If he ties it yes, if he passes...not so much.  Tiger has very consistent in his position that the number of major wins is the SOLE factor in determining who is the best of all time....he has repeated, repeated and repeated this statement and has done so very deliberatily.....the reason is that he expects to pass Jack on the major list and wants everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) to acknowledge that there is no doubt he is the greatest of all time.....

Tiger knows exactly what he is doing..........personally, I would love to see Tiger win the US Open and get a step closer....would make the rest of the summer that much more compelling......one of the best golf seasons in  a long while so far
