It may be a simple question, but I've sometimes found it amusing to see what people do/don't do when they hear fore, and I was curious what all of your reactions may be.  (Personally, I duck and throw my hands up above my head, and if I know the direction from which its coming, I'll turn away as well.)

When out on the baseball or football field, or playground, the equivalent warning phrase was always "heads up!," which seemed a little counter-productive unless you wanted a baseball between the eyes.  (But I always liked to follow directions, so when I heard that, I looked up)

Luckily for me, I have never been nailed by a golf ball before, knock on wood..

I Don't really duck, but I turn away from the sound and cover my head. I'd rather take dozens of body shots before 1 head shot, but hopefully neither, of course.

I make sure my temples and the back of my head are protected by my arms and turn away from wherever I think the yell came from.

A few years ago a buddy got hit in the back of the head with an errant tee shot.  He just collapsed to the ground out cold.  We seriously thought he was toast, never seen someone do that before.  Paramedic said he was really lucky.

Turn & cover my head.

I've been hit a few times, the most recent in 2008 at The Quarry in Canton, Oh. Sixth hole, a downhill par 3. My group was on the green & waved the group behind us to hit up. I stood about 30 feet to the left of the green while they hit. One guy hits his shot & yells 'Head's Up"...a split second later his ball hits me in the side on the fly - just below my ribs. Left a huge bruise that turned all yellow & purple. I mean, it dropped me like a sack of potatoes. Had he yelled Fore I would have turned away & probably not been hit cuz I would have moved.

Anyway, he gets to the green & comes up to apologize to me, and I just hissed, "The term is FORE, not Head's Up."

'Head's Up' to me, means, 'Get ready I'm about to hit.'

'Fore' means 'Look out, a ball is coming right at you.'

This. I just make an arm helmet and keep walking. If I hear a chorus of "fore" then I will hit the deck or try to put my golf bag between me and the voices.

I protect the back and sides of my head and try to turn away from where it is coming from, then hope for the best.

I got some good advice once. When you hear someone yell fore run next to the flagstick, it is the safest place on the golf course.

    • ..maybe 1 shot HC change might be a good starting point..
    • Yeah, I have a similar view. I was in the team of 2 and we got down 5 after 5. Get 1 pt if win the hole - whatever that game is called. We lost it 3 down with 2 to play so almost saved it. After the first hole when the single did a putt, then dropped a second ball, made a slight adjustment and sunk it, we thought it wasn't right. We couldn't do anything with handicaps etc so we just made them wait between putts - usually just one of us to putt. We were a 23 and 25 handicappers (probably playing to about 28) and the single was a 16 handicapper, but somehow had a HC of 20 (so that is 1 HC pt already). In terms of making it fair, and changing HC (HC1 + HC2 / 4), I think maybe adding 2 HCs to the double (or taking 2 HC off the single (after the adding and div by 4) might make it fair. Also maybe making a rule that the single couldn't change clubs for the second hit. Hard to say from that one game but possibly: - 2 shot HC adding - can't change clubs for second shot - need to have other team putt in between their 2 putts   Not sure. Do you think you'd still win or have these rules made it unfair the other way? Cheers for thoughts..
    • In that case I double down on my comments - I'll take the single guy and I know if I'm in that match against two similar players I'm pretty confident that I'm the favorite.
