It must be nice to play in a state that isn't a humid hell so that walking could even be considered an option.

I'm in Dallas and walk 9 holes 2-3 times a week after work when it's still 100+. Walking is always an option! =P

Meh, off-topic but I walked 18 yesterday in 100 degree weather with high humidity.  It's not as bad as some people think, then again, I've gotten rather used to it so it doesn't bother me as much.  Actually managed to shoot one of my better rounds recently of 84.

As to the topic, OP, you come off as a dbag yourself.  As was pointed out, your post was taken at face value.  Next time, you may want to spend that extra time working out how your going to take your next shot or helping your playing partner by keeping your eye on his shot.

115 is pretty damned good for having started playing recently.  Keep it up and if this is really something you want to improve in, pay attention on the course.

Not really... at least where I am, all but maybe 2 courses will not let you walk. So walking is not always an option. I wish that it was around here, although in the heat, I'd still take the cart.

I'm not saying people don't do it. I see it most of the times, but I do think you could potentially be playing with fire (dehydration).

I don't mean to start a pissing match, but Texas heat has never bothered me before compared to what's just 5 hours east of you. I remember cross country meets and camps that I would work where the heat would be significantly over 100. I also remember thinking "man this dry weather makes everything easier!".

No match to be started... I worded in New Orleans for a year after Katrina hit. I've also got a buddy that lived in Shreveport and another in Beaumont. I refuse to visit them from May-Nov. Same goes for Houston. 90+ there is way worse than 100+ here, the humidity is unbelievable... Playing in NO the year I was there changed my view of playing up in here in Dallas a lot. I used to be an early time guy or not at all. Now it's not an issue, I've tee'd off the past two Sundays and 1pm and been just fine.

SO you fit right in by that comment! I hope to god you offered the guy to share your cart after you learned that.

I spent some time in Lakey, Leakey, or something like that. I think it's mid/southwest Texas? I was amazed at dry weather. Same concept applies to the cold! I remember being in Angel Fire, NM at -13 and thinking "I've deer hunted in worse than this".

For the most part, I'm cold natured and the heat doesn't bother me here. If I happen to venture onto a golf course, it's wrist slitting time.

I usually prefer to play alone.  I've been paired up before and its been fine, actually had some fun and met some decent folks.  But if i take the time to go golfing by myself, there is usually a reason.  Usually i want peace and quiet, want to practice particular aspects of my game, and have something stressful on my mind and would prefer to concentrate on something other than that stress, golf works wonders for taking my concentration.

As for the angry birds things, who cares?!  Not sure why everyone is getting their panties all bunched up because the guy made a joke about playing around with a smart phone.  I do it all the time when I am waiting for people infront of me.  Just grab the phone, check emails, send a text, google random things, and the occasional angry birds.  I don't hit the ball then automatically start flinging birds around, but yeah if there is a lull in the play i'll look at my phone.  I shoot the same either way.

Me too. The course paired me up with some arrogant young kid in a cart that looked at me and thought I was some old bag dragger. Kid didn't say much, hacked up the course and played angry birds on his phone. I proceeded to whoop his ass and he barely acknowledged me when I complimented him on his few nice shots. I don't know why he was out there if he just wanted to play with his phone.

Did you think it was the Angry Birds forum?

I'm KIDDING!  I'm very happy you posted about your casual, riding round with no apparent abnormalities or noteworthy circumstances.  It's like a "Hello Forum" post, just in the wrong section

I'm just giving you a hard time.  But I should point out that your definition of "hyperbole" is off.  You are suggesting you were joking, not being hyperbolic.  I don't believe you though

And you aren't truly a golfer until you learn how to be a d-bag.

I'm KIDDING again!

I have same compassion for you OP.  The fact that a bunch of people came on this thread to trash playing "Angry Birds" is a bit silly.  Why waste your time typing a response into the box if it's just a negative comment with absolutely no benefit.  I think this forum is full of grumpy old men who are bitter because their depends are leaky.

I do have to give you credit for playing solo after only picking up the game so recently.   I have always been more than happy to walk a round solo,  but in the beginning of the season etc.,  I find it quite stressful  (although it should be the opposite)  to go out and hack up a round alone.....  at least when I'm with friends I have company while I'm struggling,  rather than just beating myself up over every poor shot I take.

    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
