Hey guys, I'm having a little trouble with my iron game. After a month off from swinging, I have now picked up a rather large draw. Sometimes I can play it, other times it's just too much draw. I believe my problem is that I'm turning my hands over too much during the follow-thru. What are the best drills to help fix my problem? Thanks.

Where does the ball start?  If it is starting out to the right of target and over drawing you are going to need to work on path and try not to come so much from the inside.  If it's starting online and drawing I would focus more on the face.  Also where are you playing the ball in your stance?

It's starting on target and drawing. I play the ball in the middle of my stance on 9-7, little more forward 6-4, and 3 iron a little more forward then that. I've been told that it's a result of my short backswing (due to multiple shoulder injuries/surgeries) and being used to taking a slap shot for 20+ years instead of a golf swing.

For me, when I start hooking the ball (starting online, hooking left), it's usually because I'm not shifting my weight forward sufficiently. When I focus on making sure my weight goes forward during the downswing, my shots straighten out. Hope that helps.

open the face a touch and see what happens.  should start just right of target and come back.

or you could swing left a little bit.

If your stock shot is a push draw and your problem is closing the club face too much, maybe just go to the range and hit a bunch of exaggerated low cuts. I find that going to the range and really exaggerating the fix to remember the feel of NOT doing what I'm doing wrong, then dialing it back to a realistic place, often helps me. Try hitting the cut with a slightly open stance, keeping the hands forward (hence low cut) with the face open to the path and and really exaggerate not releasing the hands, feeling like you're keeping that impact position, hands well forward and face open, well into the follow through. Then maybe slowly let back on the exaggeration until you can hit a dead straight ball.  Then try sprinkling in a few of your stock shots and see if either the problem is fixed or if you're still hitting straight over draws, maybe being able to go back and forth between a solid, playable cut and your problem shot will help you figure out why exactly you're over closing the face on your stock shot.

This strategy really helps me.  For example, I've always struggled getting the club face closed with longer clubs.  I can't tell you how many long par 3s I've played where I aim left or left center, start the ball at the right edge, and watch it fade to pin high 20 yards right of the green.  The fix I'm working on now is more hip slide and turn (by impact) and loose shoulders.  I've fallen back and hit everything longer than 7i way right in my last round (WAY worse than before I started fixing of course), so at the range last night I started out just way overdoing it, pushing and turning my hips so hard that I pretty much had no choice but to spin the upper body and come over the top, but what I was really going for was remembering what it felt like to use the lower body to put me in a position to let the club face get closed, and I succeeded in doing that, hitting a bunch of hard straight pulls or pull draws.  Then I toned it down and was able to get back into the groove, finishing with a string of really great 3i and 4i shots, straight or baby draws and with an excellent dispersion cone for me with the long irons.

hes not hitting a push draw.  hes starting it at the target.  he needs to either get it started a little to the right and draw it back or shift his plane to the left a little.

I recently struggled a bit with this. Ball would start straight or left and draw. Checking my grip and setting up with the face slightly open fixed it. Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2

2 Words - Face control

Drill:

  • Go to the range with about 50 balls.
  • Lay down an alignment stick that lies just below the heel of your club at address.
  • Using only your right hand (choking down on the club obviously), strike the ball while on plane with focus on keeping your right wrist firm at impact and in your follow-through
  • If you were to draw a line on your wrist, it should match the shape (parallelism) of the face of the club.

Strengthening/Controlling the firmness of your wrist will give you face control to which, with the right swing plane, you'll be able to shape your shots on demand.

I am perpetually on guard against this. Either on line w/big draw or pul w/ big draw. Thus I am always holding the face and not turning it over, and when I do it right the results are a baby push draw. However, every round I will still hit at least a few pull draws.

I know.  This is exactly why I suggested what I did.  I'm giving him the credit as a 5 HC that his stock shot isn't a straight over-draw/hook that moves too much to be a controllable shot.  I assumed given that this is the miss he's developed that his stock shot when he's playing well is a push-draw, or maybe a straight baby-draw and he just sets up aimed a bit right.  If it's the push-draw he's after, then what I suggested is just one way I'd try to remember how not to over-close the face.  If it's the straight baby-draw he wants, then obviously he needs to bring his swing plane back left, and hitting some low hard cuts and then slowly dialing it back to a baby-cut then straight could help him remember how not to swing with a hook swing plane too.

I also have this problem once in awhile. I worked it out that I was pulling the club ACROSS my body instead of out TOWARDS the target. So again, using the image of tossing something underhand towards the target helps get it back on line.

I totally agree that face control is definitely what the OP requires but having tried this, I am having trouble feeling the right wrist conditions at impact. Can you elaborate on this condition and how you manage to feel it?

    • I agree with @dennyjones, a suspension of some meaningful duration would be better than getting bounced from the Tour. They might consider experimenting each week. It might generate a bit of interest. I like the idea of a visible shot clock. If a player and their caddy can’t decide on a strategy and pull the trigger in XX seconds (30? 45? 60?), one stroke penalty. Give each player 2 resets a round. The clock starts when the last player to hit’s ball stops moving. Other pace ideas could be used every couple events until a consensus is reached to adopt or ditch an idea.
