I realize it's very early to be contemplating this, but I thought it would be a fun discussion. The options I generated played in three or more Ryder Cups, with winning point percentages >.40 My choice would be Hale Irwin: Strong under pressure--Three US Open wins, Clinched US victory at '91 Kiawah in the final match against Langer Understands the team concept--Two all Big Eight cornerback for University of Colorado, Captained the 1994 President's Cup team to victory Excellent Ryder Cup record 13-5-2 over 5 Ryder Cups .70point % Well respected by others, the best Champions Tour (Senior PGA) player of all time.

Who makes the selection and what are the criteria?

It seems like most recent picks have been veterans that are still playing regularly.  This might give them some insider knowledge of the players games, but hasn`t really translated into victories (at least for the US).

It looks like Nicklaus was the last repeat Captain when he did it in 1983 and again in 1987.  Watson was the last US Captain to win in Europe in 1993.

Fred Couples, why not, they've won two Prez Cups with him as captain, give him a shot against the Europeans.

I voted "other" as this would be my choice as well, I don't know why Nelson hasn't been considered before.

Of the names on the list, I'd go with Miller.  Miller is familiar with all their games and is arrogant enough to not be intimidated by Tiger, Phil or anyone else that might end up on the team.

Larry Nelson is a great choice--forgot to put him as an option. Served in the military. 3 majors. 3 Ryder Cups with a record of 9-3-1 .73point %

I like the Couples choice because he has had so much success at the Presidents Cup. I also like the Hale Irwin choice, but his window for the PGA to pick him may have passed. Same with Larry Nelson, I think their times may have passed, neither of them were even vice-captains. I think the PGA will pick Jeff Sluman.

I think the PGA will pick Jeff Sluman.

--or O'Meara or skip straight to Furyk. I like your sense of humor. That would be typical of the PGA--Sluman never played in the Ryder Cup, but won the PGA and has been assistant captain a couple of times. Irwin and Nelson are ridiculously overdue.

    • Day 303 - Long travel day, so just some mirror swings. Still trying to find that special combination that doesn’t induce hip pain.
    • Day 54 - 2024-11-13 Played 18 at Tobacco Road.
    • ..maybe 1 shot HC change might be a good starting point..
    • Yeah, I have a similar view. I was in the team of 2 and we got down 5 after 5. Get 1 pt if win the hole - whatever that game is called. We lost it 3 down with 2 to play so almost saved it. After the first hole when the single did a putt, then dropped a second ball, made a slight adjustment and sunk it, we thought it wasn't right. We couldn't do anything with handicaps etc so we just made them wait between putts - usually just one of us to putt. We were a 23 and 25 handicappers (probably playing to about 28) and the single was a 16 handicapper, but somehow had a HC of 20 (so that is 1 HC pt already). In terms of making it fair, and changing HC (HC1 + HC2 / 4), I think maybe adding 2 HCs to the double (or taking 2 HC off the single (after the adding and div by 4) might make it fair. Also maybe making a rule that the single couldn't change clubs for the second hit. Hard to say from that one game but possibly: - 2 shot HC adding - can't change clubs for second shot - need to have other team putt in between their 2 putts   Not sure. Do you think you'd still win or have these rules made it unfair the other way? Cheers for thoughts..
    • In that case I double down on my comments - I'll take the single guy and I know if I'm in that match against two similar players I'm pretty confident that I'm the favorite.
