It's a bit cooler in Georgia now it's November, so I've dusted off my pull-cart and am loving walking golf. I'm playing better, too. About 3-4 shots a round.

I also play in a regular weekly foursome, and I mentioned to my buddies that it would be fun for them to walk, but they ain't buying it. I'm not going to persuade them out of their carts.

Of the four players, I'm right in the middle, typically shooting in the mid 80s. I reckon the other players range from one guy who typically breaks 80 to an another guy who typically breaks 100.

Do y'all think it is possible to be a walking golfer playing with 3 guys who are riding and still keep up? The public course we play is around 6700 yards, but there is no substantial distance between any holes - walk off one green and the next teebox is adjacent.

Has anyone else tried walking alongside guys who are riding?

I have done this.  I think it helps if you are NOT the shortest hitter in the group.

On courses where there is a substantial distance between holes, I would usually "ride" on one of the carts but try to walk as much as is practical- if you are hitting it decently and are familiar with the course, often times you can hit your tee shot, grab a few clubs and walk to your ball, then grab what you need after hitting your approach.

I walk/push a lot, and quite often get paired up with someone who is driving.  I almost always get the "roll eyes" when they think the have to wait for me, but I've never had any problems keeping up.

i ride and have played with several walkers, everyone of them have stayed with the pack, no problem with that.

Ya, if every hole everyone is waiting on you then it could be a problem, but that is probably the only time I could think it would be a big deal.  I am cheap...I mean frugal :) so I like to walk whenever I can.  More often than not when I play the course is all backed up so I am waiting at every hole so its no rush and walking is fine.  I also sometimes think a cart is slower when I play with one of my friends - he often hooks while i often slice, always going off in opposite directions ends up in driving back and forth

You should have no problem keeping up. Your group will play no faster than the group in front of you plays and on most public courses that will be not much faster than you if they are also a foursome.

It shouldn't be an issue....

If you play ready golf, you'll be waiting on them.

I think the biggest thing is that you always have to keep moving. If it's practical, hit your ball when you get to it, and try to keep walking while other players are hitting (stop walking, of course, as they are swinging, but you can still walk while they clean their clubs, make practice swings, etc.).

You know what? You will tee off at the same time, and putt at the same time....after 18 holes you will finish at exactly the same time... They will have gone left, right, left, right, etc... all day. keeping up will NOT be a problem.

So true. I walk whenever possible and I'm always waiting on the green for the riders who are crisscrossing the fairway.

I did the walk-on single routine for many years in the past.....and I always walked.   I occasionally saw the dread in the faces of the guys I was paired with........LOL    Riders are sometimes ignorant and don't know any better.  They think.... "Oh geez, we got stuck with a walker" , but their concerns are unfounded.  They don't understand it's possible to walk 18 holes in 3hrs or less.  I'd play ready golf and walk straight to my ball and they soon found that they were slower golfers riding carts than I was by foot.   Usually after 1-2holes......that dread disappeared when the obvious became clear when they see you won't hold up play.

lol Last w/end I played as a walk on single with a couple guys somewhat older than I, and in their 70's. It was a par 60 course; they walked, I was on a cart. I felt it necessary to explain on the first tee that I generally ride due to my foot neuropathy (from chemo). No, even these guys didn't slow things down really. We had a fine time. I much prefer to walk. Next time I'll try walking the short course and take my "shooting stick", i.e. folding seat-on-a-post. Then I won't look so silly with the old codgers :-)

I do the walk on single too, and i usually enjoy the faces riders give me when I join a few of them with jeans and t-shirt sometimes. I play honors golf with them, but I'll be ready to hit when its my turn and not waiting next to the previous guy.  Most of the time, I'll be up near the green when the last guy is hitting their 2nd into the green.  I'll be out of the way of course, but I don't see the point to wait next to the other guys.  On empty days, I've played through a 2-some riding together.  Of course it depends on the person, but I think there is a misconception on people who walk.  I also find that I play better when walking, I'm not entirely sure why though.

Not a prob to be a walker, unless lost in the tall grass.  Then I just have to man up and drop a ball and take the strokes.  I find it’s more enjoyable than making ppl wait on me.  And for sure, if one rider hooks and the other slices and your game is on, you are waiting on them.  (6900 yards)

Sure,I've done it.  I will say that I never really liked that situation, as I always felt like I had to rush to keep up with them if they had a clue about cart usage.  Even when there was no need to hurry as we kept up with the players in front of us, it still felt like I was holding them back (I'm not sure just how to explain it, but it did).  I also seemed to get tired midway through the back nine, even though I never did when playing with at least one other walker.  Usually if I got paired up with 3 riders, I'd just bite the bullet and ride too.  Now when I ride with other walkers, I make a point of not rushing ahead of them.  I'll drive slowly, often right alongside of them and try to be companionable to avoid giving them that feeling that I used hate.

I play with a walker every week and I ride and we never have any trouble.  We keep the same pace and play ready golf so I will usually end up hitting shots first.  Lots of times I will just cruise along with him having a conversation and waiting back until he hits and so forth.  Never any issues and we are usually always waiting on groups ahead when its just the two of us.  He's a high 70's shooter and I'm a low 80's.

Every week? Do you have trouble walking or extra money burning a hole in your pocket?

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
