Which golf balls do you use?

Maxfli U/4 and U/4x.  The U/4x is for the higher swing speed crowd, and is my personal preference.  I have found it to be the longest off the driver and have just the right spin off the irons and wedges.  You can make it check nicely on short pitches and chips, too.  These balls are BOGO on the Dick's Sporting Goods website right now, so you can pick them up for less than $20/dozen.

Wilson Smartcore NuClear orange - no complaints ... at my hcp, feels fine off the driver & has a far better feel around greens than the harder covered distance balls (Slazengers, XL's, etc.).     I used to use the Q Star yellow and have spent alot of time comparing the two balls ...  the covers feel about the same using the "fingernail test", balls sound the same and feel the same around the greens ... the Wilson is 1/2 the price & is far more visible in flight, so it's my ball.     Wilson balls are the Rodney Dangerfield of golf balls ... get no respect & thats ok - I like finding my ball in any foursome !!

I recently switched to the Yellow Srixon Z star because I have trouble seeing the ball when it lands however I have played a lot with the Nike PD Soft and it was a very good ball considering it can be found for less than $20/dozen. It has a nice feel off the driver/irons and it will back up on full shots.

played Titleist for most of the last decade, mostly DT SoLo and ProV1s when i was feeling flush. tried out the Bridgestone e6 and i'm converted.

workability is a bit compromised, but misses (left or right) aren't nearly as bad. good feel with scoring clubs, and a slight gain in distance throughout the bag. for $27/dzn it's a hard one to beat. i kinda like the little arrow alignment tool on the ball as well.

I can't say I've ever subscribed to the theory that a mid to high handicapper should play tour priced balls (i.e. Pro V1's).  The original question doesn't call for debating the merits of tour priced balls for 85 MPH swing speeds, but I digress.

I alternate between the following, depending on sale price:

1. Callaway Diablo Tour

2. Titleist NXT Tour

Ive never subscribed to the theory that a mid-priced ball is worth spending the money on vs a distance/budget ball.  Ive found NXTs on the course a few times, played them for a few holes and never found anything special about them.

There are differences. The problem is that by the time you're good enough to tell the difference, you're probably more likely to benefit from a premium ball. :P

I primarily play the Penta TP3.  I hear they're being discontinued, but if you can still find them they usually are on sale.  Not the equal of a ProV, but a VERY good all-around ball.  I'd rate distance, spin, workability and feel all about 8.5-9 on a 1-10 scale, and pretty durable.

OK, fair point, and I should have emphasized "sale" price in my original post.  For instance, my local retailer has the Callaway Diablo Tour's on sale for $19.00 a dozen.  I'll probably buy five or so dozen, and use them over the course of a summer or two...At this price, there's not much difference between my rookie ball (Top Flite Titanium TI X-Outs - how's that for accepting my status in the golfing world), and the ones I'm gaming now.

Over the years, I've moved along the following golf ball path from rookie to poser:

1. Top Flite TI X-Outs

2. Top Flite TI

3. Top Flite XL2000 Magna

4. Top Flite XL2000 Exceptional Spin

5. Top Flite XL3000 Super Spin

6. Top Flite Strata Tour Soft (underrated ball)

7. Titleist NXT Tour

8. Callaway Diablo Tour

There's no denying that the hardness and spin of my original ball choice is somewhat muted/softened by the newer balls I'm sporting.  But I personally can't tell the difference between the mid-level balls I'm using now, and the high priced tour ones.  As a +14, I'm not exactly a "player".

A golf ball is a golf ball until your 60 Yards and in. Ill loose 2-4 strokes a round if play a another ball because i know exactly how much the Pro V1x will roll or bounce from short shots. Any other ball would require months of practise to figure out its tendencies.

Look at Rory, he's going to Nike gear now. All he's worried about, is the switch to the Nike ball from the titleist ball he played since he was a junior, and I'm sure he's not talking about how the ball will effect his distance. Its all about the short games ladies, that's why the soft covers where designed. I can get a rock to stop and drop from 125, but not even tiger can get a Top Flight to check from 25 yards...

Im using the Bridgestone E5 right now.  I love it!  Its got a urethane cover, so it spins really well and they only cost $27 a dozen.  Youd be hard-pressed to find a better ball under $40 a dozen.  The Srixon Q-Star is really nice too and feels very soft but it doesnt have the spin of the E5.

Where are you guys buying your golf balls?!?! I have never paid over 20 bucks a dozen for Bridgestone E5. I always get the latest year model with no logos. There are some great sellers on EBay to buy new balls from. I see no sense buying from a pro shop or sporting good store and paying those suggested prices. The only brand you won't find a huge discount on is Titleist unless you buy 12 dozen at a time in some cases.

I agree with what shooter said 100%. I play a ProV1 when I am serious and have not found anything else come close from 60 yards in.

While Titleist makes a good ball, for me I can't justify the price, especially with all the different balls out here. I haven't found that they spin any more than the TM Penta or Srixon but I am certainly in the minority.

wilson DX2 mostly or any low compression ball i find.

I get medium/long distance shots working better with a soft ball easy to compress. I keep tour quality balls for short game practice and pitch and putt rounds.
