Match play is a great format, and I think I would enjoy playing it a lot more.  The Ryder Cup and Presidents Cups are great too, as is this ONE event.  But just remember what happens on the final day of a major non-team match play event.

We all complain all the time about Nick Faldo and Johnny Miller and David Feherty, and them only showing a small handful of golfers who are in contention down the stretch during a normal stroke play event.  On Sunday there are 2 guys playing golf for 4 hours.  4 if you count the consolation match, but they don't even show much of that thing, if I recall correctly.

There is a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooottttttttttttttttttttttttt of down time between golf shots.

What format do you play with your buddies?

We play match play almost exclusively.  Usually just a little nassau.  Individual or 4-ball depending on the group.  Easy to handicap, and it tends to speed up the round as it's easy for someone to pick up if they're out of the hole.  No one is ever grinding over a 5 footer for triple.  Plus a bad hole is just that.....only one bad hole.

Just about the only time I ever play stroke play is in tournaments.

It IS worth noting that it's important to be honest in posting your scores for handicap.  If you're not careful, it'd be easy to post scores that are too low if you're picking up when out of a hole or when a hole is conceded......

That's the thing ... I don't normally play any games with my buddies.  Next week, however, we are playing a fourball match that should be a lot of fun.  Hopefully, we can do that a lot more.

But typically I'm golfing with my dad and father in law that just don't have any interest in playing for anything.

With two little ones at home, I also have trouble finding time to play, so I don't have a regular game, and oftentimes when I do get out, I'm playing with strangers.

So, I'm just out there trying to score my best, and that's about it.

I've always said, I'd rather win $5 from one of my golf buddies than find a $100 bill on the ground!

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
