how in the heck do people break clubs so easily?Β  i have given a couple of mine a beating or two before and never broken a club.Β  at least i figure when you bang a club on the ground or toss is up in the air out of frustration there is no way the impact is too much more intense than when you swing the club normally and take a divot.Β  i guess throwing clubs at carts or trees is different though, but why do that unless it's an accidental target?

A golfing buddy of mine broke his brand new Rocketballz 3W last year by holding it with a normal swing grip, but he went over-hand and axe-smashed the ground with it. The shaft shattered and the hosel snapped.

His nickname "Big Rich" suits him though because he is a big dude. It was funny for us because he's just a funny guy (not a typical hot head) and the break was clearly accidental. But to break it after owning it for only 2 weeks and repeatedly telling us how much he loved the club... hilarious if you were there.

In my life, I have broken 2 clubs out of anger ... and felt like a complete idiot both times.Β  One involved slamming it into the ground, and yes, I had to do it pretty hard.Β  The other time I whacked my bag with my wedge after a crappy pitch.Β  When I stepped up to hit my next tee shot, during my first waggle, my driver broke in two pieces because I had basically severed it with the wedge.

Lesson learned.Β  Don't break clubs.

1.Β  You look like a jackass to everybody else on the course.

2.Β  You'll feel like one too.

3.Β  The bad shot you just hit still exists.Β  (It doesn't magically go away)

4.Β  You put yourself in a mental position to hit more bad shots.

5.Β  And to top it all off, you have to pay to get them fixed or replaced.

Imagine if you were judged for the rest of your life based on those two incidents?

LOL.Β  Precisely why I don't have strong negative opinions about things like Rory's WD earlier this year.Β  It would be hypocritical of me to think he's a jerk and then be offended when everybody else thinks the same of me.Β  We all make mistakes, we all do stupid sh*t, but that doesn't really mean that is who we are.

I forgot to add, though, that I still like to curse when I eff up.

We had a member who was notorious for breaking clubs in anger. One time I was playing with him and another guy who had been a Division I defensive lineman (Read: BIG!).

The Angry Young Man hit an awful drive and swung around toward us to the side and slammed hisΒ driver into the ground, making the head snap off and come spinning fast and hard in our direction. After jumping out of the way, Division I Guy walked menacingly toward him and told him that if he ever did something like that in his presence again, he would be very sorry. The guy practically got on his knees in contrition and was on good behavior the rest of the day.

He is long gone now, but that is his legacy. Everybody remembers him as the nut who broke golf clubs.

I've called myself names before after performing poorly. Β But never have I done so with any of the kids I coach.

Yes but otoh, think of the entertainment you provided the other players by breaking that driver in such a spectacular fashion - I would have rolled around on the grass LMAO. Isn't it a bit selfish to deprive us of this sort of thing? ...... ;>)

LOL, fair point.Β  My friends were doing exactly that!Β  Well, I don't think they were literally on the grass, but they were hysterical.

I will definitely drop some curses while playing, but I don't let myself get angry for any extended period of time. I don't know where I read this but the phrase "You're not good enough to get mad" is something I like to hold on to. That and, "The worst day on the course is better than the best day at work". Although difficult at times, laughing at a horrible shot seems to loosen me up.

This past weekend my buddy let fly a few choice words along with his wedge. It was a nice throw but it flew into a tree and stayed there. I suggested he throw a provisional club since I didn't know if we would be able to find the first one. LOL He wasn't amused.

It's easy to prevent the club from breaking if it's an iron or wedge! just turn the toe of the club to the ground... won't break and you can still get upset :)
