My 56* wedge is 14* bounce. I'm thinking about buying another 56* wedge but wondering if a lower bounce would be better. What degree bounce do you use for fairway shots?

These thread are popping up a lot lately.

I use my 54/13 for a ton of shots from 115 yards and inwards.  I don't consider the bounce on full swing fairway shots because it doesn't come into play.  You hit those shots with forward shaft lean and make contact with the ball before the turf.  More bounce, at most, is simply going to keep your divots a little bit smaller.

The extra bounce definitely won't hurt you, and if you happen to catch it a pinch heavy it could actually help by (somewhat) minimizing the digging that may occur.

Agree with GD. My 56* has 14* of bounce and sees more action than any of my other wedges because of that. I have a 60* that I love dearly but if the lie is at all sketchy the 56 gets the call. My 60 has 8* of bounce and I love to have more.

I have a 54.11 and a 56.10.  I don't use either one for full shots (54 is my bunker wedge and the 56 is my version of a LW).  My shortest full wedge is my 51° GW, and I don't know or care what the bounce is on it, but it's pretty much the same as my PW and 9I.  This is just my way to play, and doesn't mean anything to anyone else.

Agree w GD and EJ I played 14 of bounce in my 55 and don't have issues with tight lies. Having said that, you need to not only look at the bounce but at the grind on the sole. I've had SW where the leading edge stays off the ground and wedges with leading edge hugs the ground. As long as the shaft lean is forward, you should not have any issues. The bounce will help you on shots that are slightly fat Of course, if you are hitting off bare ground with the leading edge high above the ground, then that may cause some concern. But that is a special situation

Yeah I now take a deep breath before clicking

I'll just share this link and have 6iron decide for himself.  I wouldn't recommend wedges in a low bounce.

Since I hit a lot of pitch shots from a case of missthegreenitus I use the bounce a lot. The 56 I have now has 13 degree bounce with a flat grind so I can do very well with flop shots off of thin lies with it. It was perfect for the course I used to play, with very firm ground and very short thin grass. It's not ideal for the course I play now because this course has much softer soil and much thicker and longer fairway grass with a lot of grain. Way too easy for the leading edge to catch that grain and suck the club right into the ground before impact when depending on the bounce.

Funny thing is that I gave away my old 56 that had a much more rounded grind because it was terrible where I used to play but would be great where I play now.

Moral of the story: Doesn't hurt to have more than one wedge if you play multiple courses with different conditions and/or bunker sand. The bounce that may be perfect for one course may not be ideal for another.

Thanks!

    • Phone launch monitors are only getting better.  The cameras are improving with each new generation of phone and software is getting more accurate.  It is only a question of time before phone apps are good enough for all the basic information a golfer needs (club head speed, ball speed, carry distance, total distance).  It makes me wonder about the value of launch monitors in the long run, barring high level amateurs and professionals who want very accurate data and more parameters
    • I live in South India so temperatures are virtually never cold enough to stop play.  Just that the monsoon can make play difficult.  I am just not willing to play in the rain and kind of reluctant to play when the ground is soggy and balls are plugging all the time.  And since we don't have snow here, any time the ground is dry enough I am willing to play
    • Just listened to episode 8 - I really enjoyed this one. The vegetable analogy is great IMO. Candy is fun and gives you the instant high, but if you only eat candy you're not going to be feeling too good. Vegetables don't give you that instant high, but they keep you healthier and long term you'll feel much better.  For what it's worth, for me, sometimes I want something that is going to help me shoot a better score on Saturday and others I want to improve something about my swing that will make me better long term even if I struggle a little in the short term. It's up to me to communicate that with my coach.  Last comment - I would indeed share the hope that every lesson leaves the player "better" than they were on the way in. I would imagine if you have a good coach and good student, then the only time that doesn't happen is when you leave the lesson with it going so badly that you just revert to the old pattern.
    • After the Watson disaster, it really seems like the Browns are hedging their bets with quarterback now.  My guess is that Flacco is still seen as the old reliable that can play if need be, but they are just hoping one of the other three can separate himself. Somebody is going to be the odd man out by the time the season starts, so it makes for an easy daily storyline out of Berea come training camp. Still kind of thought that with the 2026 QB class so well thought of, building the other positions made more sense, but nobody is paying me to run a football team.
    • I think the initial red flag is having Deion second guessing every coaching decision. Blabbering in the media about his kid being under utilized and unable to shine.   I think the secondary fear is Deion wanting to coach and turning the team ownership and leadership into a chaos and a clown car! The more talking heads I had heard, have reported that Shedeur showed up for interviews unprepared and unserious. And that is not how a #1 draft acts. it would be 1 thing if he was the most talented QB who played at a top ten school. But he played in a lesser division and as someone else stated, had to score a lot just to win (9-4 & 4-8).
