Sorry, I disagree...at this point, yes, it was a horrible tragedy, but it was 12 years ago. Time to move on. I know I'm in the minority with that opinion, but it is what it is. How is that different from some Country singer writing a song about it to turn a profit? He's heralded for profiting off of it though. It would be one thing if they did this in 2002.

Obviously the people it personally affected (lost a loved one, etc.,) will see it differently, as they should, but as far as the rest of us, I think it's time to move on. Not forget, but finally move on.

I know I'll get flamed for that, but it's just one man's opinion.

As one of the comments states, we have no issue with memorial day sales, right? The difference is, the memorial day ad could be displayed the day after a parent loses their child in Afghanistan. That's worse IMO.

Another way of looking at it is if terrorism is intended to disrupt and undermine the way we live in the US a day on the course is a big giant middle finger to all that practice it.

I worked in WTC 1 and this is just in bad taste, but like what I said about the MLK tweet, like Memorial Day sales, it's tacky, hyper-commercialist, I'll make my opinion known about it and move on.

Just joined.  Bad taste regardless of logic.  If they said they will donate $9.11 to a cause and charge $19.99, that could have been better.

Businesses as a general rule shouldn't try to profit off of a tragedy or loss of lives but as Slice of Life stated, we regularly see Memorial Day weekend sales and don't react negatively towards those businesses that advertise them.

What I find most distasteful in the ad is the pricing (9.11 and 19.11) seems the golf course should have rethought the use of those numbers and just left it at $10 and $20.

I'm with you Slice. This isn't a big deal to me, and I consider myself to be a very patriotic individual. They aren't saying it wasn't a tragedy, or that we shouldn't reflect on the day and remember those that were lost. To me it just seems like they are saying hey, instead of moping around all day, come play golf with us and we'll give you a discounted rate as we remember this day.

Death threats?!? I mean come on, that's ridiculous. People often confuse mourning and caring as the same thing. They believe that if you aren't still visibly upset 12 years after the event, that you have forgotten and don't care anymore. That couldn't be farther than the truth.

With that said, I'll take two sets of 9 holes for $18.22 instead of 18 holes for $19.11. Their logic seems pretty dumb as far as that goes.

People do think Memorial Day sales are tacky. Just Google Memorial Day Sales Tacky. It's been so much a regular part of the year that most people are inured to it. Death threats - that's of course too much, just shake your head and move  on.

Yeah, that's how I took it as well. The rates they're offering are over 50% off of the regular rates, so it seems they're losing money on this, not "profiting from a tragedy". They just wanted to commemorate the day.

It was probably a PR error to just give a discount instead of charging the regular rate and donating the difference to some charity or foundation (in fact they have since said that they will honor the discount *and* donate the difference to the 9/11 memorial fund), but neither one seems in bad taste to me.

I'm not offended by this.  But I'm not offended by much.  I guess everyone has their own threshold, but I think as a society we get offended by nearly everything. It has become offended overkill.

I throw it in the "poor taste" category at best. I lost a very close friend that day who worked in the WTC. Funny, he was the person who turned me on to golf in the first place way back when. Great guy, the kind of person who just went out of his way to make everyone feel welcomed...miss him big time, prayers to his family on this day!

They did a bit about this last night on ESPN last night: It's a solid piece, if only because I get the chills every time I hear that Griffey story retold. When it aired live they had video of that, but it was replaced with vague pictures for YouTube. I'll say only that I don't like seeing the remembrance of a tragedy reduced to hashtags by corporations just looking to drum up press and tacky Facebook statuses that half of my friends seem to feel the need to post. Look up comedian Joe Mande's Twitter feed today if you want to know what I mean.

I don't get bothered by it, but I think the backlash will probably hurt their reputation.

I was going to say about the same thing Maddog. Good interpretation.

This.  It is almost reaching a point of insanity what offends some people in this country.  A joke.

Yeah... I'm probably too insensitive in general, but by the same token there are a lot of people who are *overly* sensitive.  (Unfortunately most overly sensitive people feel their amount of sensitivity is exactly the right amount, so anything less is insensitive.)

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
