Great videos, Mike and Stretch! I learned a technique similar to this from the pro here at Rutgers. She taught me to open the club slightly, play the ball closer to the front foot, and choke down on the club so that the grip runs through your palm and the butt end of the club can rest along your forearm. From there, you just make a putting stroke. She said to adjust for distance by changing clubs, not by swinging longer.

MVMAC - thanks for the post. I just join the forum as I've been having lots of inconsistency with the traditional chipping stroke. This is great.

2 questions here for the rest of us

1. Can we use this stroke from rough around the green too?

2. what if the ball is kinda far from the green? let say 10-20 yard to the green(edge) and the hole is another 10-20 yard from the green? Can we also do this? (should we hinge the wrist to create more speed?

Thanks all

Saenar

Saenar go to the search bar and type in quickie pitching video. Thats the shot when you are a few yards off the green or more. I can hit that style of pitch shot from 3 to50 yards probably more.

Thanks Jakester23!!!...i will go there right now. Hopefully, it's good enough for my weekend!!

I can't emphasize enough what the videos say about taking the hit instinct out of the shot. For me I feel the tempo of my back swing and match the tempo going into the shot. When I struggled(which was rare) with this shot I would try to hit the ball. I know this sounds weird but you should be thinking about tempo more than the hit. When I'm really doing the pitch correctly I don't even know I hit the ball I just feel I had the tempo back and forth perfect.

You could chip this way out of light rough where you don't have to carry the ball very far.  For most shots out of the rough you'd be best served to use more a pitch motion, more on that below.

Thanks Jakester23!!...i will hit the range today and will focus more on the tempo on the quickie pitching swing. I will also try to chip putt here.

I'm excited!!!..this could be my new weaponsss

Has anybody found success in using a hybrid from this position? I have started to practice using that club to get used to the distance, or "pop" of the ball off of the hybrid (I use a Titleist 913, 3 hybrid) and once you get used to the fact that you have to trust the run out and not hit it hard, it seems to work well. It especially works well when your on the fringe with first cut of rough directly behind the ball. I feel it works better than bellying my sand wedge.

Of course it all depends on your position around the green and where the pin is located.

I've never had any success chipping with woods and hybrids. When I have the first cut of grass directly behing my ball, I was taught to raise the handle and chip off the toe of the club. I use the same stroke.

I played around with using a hybrid to chip but always found it to be too hot, couldn't get used to it. A lot of people do chip with their hybrid though.

Technique would be the same, handle high, stand closer to it, arms bent.  Hybrids and fairway woods are good clubs to use if you ball is on the fringe and up against the rough.

Mike I was wondering with this method of chipping how do you determine what club to use? I really struggled chipping this year(I think mainly because of technique) and I was always questioning which club to use. I tried using my 50 degree wedge and seemed to not get any rollout. I would also use my 7 iron on farther shot and would have the opposite problem.  Is there a way to know which club to use depending on how far the shot is? Or do you use one club and adjust how far you carry the ball onto the green?

I would recommend using the clubs between you 50* and 7 iron ;-) Juuuust kidding

You just have to practice it a bit using different clubs so you have an idea of how far they run out.  What I really like about this technique is how consistent the ball comes off the face, that obviously helps a lot.  Most of the time I use this shot it's with a 7,8,9 iron but I've also used it with a gap wedge and 5 iron.  I  don't practice these shots with my 5 iron but I have a decent idea how far my 7-9 irons run out.  My suggestion is to get good at contact, which doesn't take that much time for this stroke and distance control will come.

Ok thanks. I'm in Wisconsin so I have some time before I can practice. I had this shot (the way I used to do it) kill me twice on my best round of my life. So I want have this shot be a strength not a weakness.

Yeah you could even practice it on your carpet or something.  Cool thing with this stroke is even if you're a little off with your club selection, it won't "kill you" on the hole.

That's great. I would putt through 2 or 3 yards to avoid this type of shot. I like the idea of practicing in my house I will do thanks coach.

Is this a product of the courses you play? I find the same in my short game, as well. I can't think of a single hole I regularly play at where a 5i chip wouldn't just roll right off the green. Would it be worth it to practice with that club (or longer) to get a better understanding of the rollout, or would that just be a waste of time?

Like I said, I don't practice that shot with a 5 iron but I have used a 5 iron a couple times in the past, obviously a shot of 40 ft or more.  I'm not carrying the ball that far on the green  I think time would be better spent with a 8/9 iron, the stroke style doesn't change, just the club.

    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
