I think this one's easy.  It's worse to come up short 9/10 times than to go long 1/10 times.

And I can generally count the number of times on one hand, and have a LOT of fingers left over, that the average amateur is past pin-high in any given round......

Agreed. It's one of the things that separates good players from really good players… the really good players will be past about 1/3 to 1/2 of their distances because they catch it a touch cleaner or something.

But that doesn't mean just taking an extra club and hitting it past pin high 50% of the time will lower your scores or make you a really good player. :)

I hate when that happens. Cause its always tends to happen when the pin is tucked in the back and my ball comes to rest on some ridiculous down slope, making it nearly impossible to get any height on the pitch shot. I end up with a 40 foot putt because the green runs away from me. :pound:

I look at it like a pattern when shooting my rifle. If more shots are low than high I click the scope up. If more shots are left or right I click the scope the other way. My goal is to have an equal amount of misses all of the way around the bulls eye.

When I'm playing pretty well my pattern is tighter and when I'm not playing as well my pattern is larger but the goal of having the target* in the center of my pattern remains the same.

* Target doesn't mean the pin. With serious trouble either left, right, short, or long my target adjusts so the edge of the pattern is still out of trouble.

this actually gives me a great idea. i think I'm going to make a drawing on where my approach shots land in comparison to the green/pin. i think that might give me a realistic idea of if I'm missing more right or left or short because i really don't keep track of that sort of thing

So I'm not going to lie I've been pretty lazy the last two days and today I went for my weekly round and had a not so great front 9 (48) but I was unstoppable on the back (37) started with a birdie then on the 14th I got a bogey and another bogey on the 17th. Ended up with an 85. I hit 10 fairways 7 greens and 18-13 31 putts. I was very happy. I hit some great shots and had some lucky ones as well. Tomorrow is a range day so I'll take some videos for my swing thread

I'll be following the thread. My goal is to get to a sub-5 handicap this before next 1/4 - my birthday. I read there's a big difference between 5 and scratch, so good luck :).

Not a lot of activity recently, so I figured I'd use it as an opportunity to toot my own horn. Shot 81 today. My best score ever. 5 more of those and I'm at 6, so pretty pleased. Left a lot of shots on the course too. Hit 6 FWs and 9 greens. Only once was I truly out of position and had to get up and down for bogey (failed). Also, no birdies despite 3 good chances. So much fun hitting the ball how you expect and for misses to go where they're supposed to.

That was a great course too.

My kid liked it.

We might come out within the next two weeks anyway, since my kid is on spring break.

Hmmm, more time to work on golf?  I was curious about getting a part time job at a course several years ago, wondering if it would give me more time/access to use the course facilities for practice.

Anyway, does this mean the business is on hold, or what?

    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
