Being a college golfer I think I need to purchase one yes haha. I probably will settle on the pin seeker

Rangefinders can help anyone, but honestly, the better you are the more positive impact they have.  You'll have more birdie opportunities and also hit more greens.  As a former collegiate golfer myself (we sucked though lol) - I would highly recommend...  You will gain confidence in your yardages and we all know we get into trouble when we second guess.  Many schools have deals with manufactures.  Ask your coach if you have deals that would allow your team to get rangefinders.  I can't say enough, how much more accurate you are. Combined with a green sheet showing pin placements, you have a huge advantage to play strategic.  Eliminate guesswork...   Good luck this season!  Now go sink some putts!!!

Agree with the bolded. Knowing exact distances to pins, hazards or whatever is a advantage for anyone but golfers can't really capitalize on this info unless they can hit consistent distances with their clubs.

If your 7 iron distance varies from 130-150 yards depending on your strike it doesn't really make much difference knowing that the pin is 142 yards and not 150 yards. Obviously this is not an issue for @MasonAsher2014 at 5.6, but more of a general comment for other readers.

As your swing develops some reasonable consistency a range finder is a great way to learn what your actual yardages are. That's why I'd like to get one soon, I know my yardages in a vague way just from on-course experience and driving range, neither of which are particularly good ways to measure your yardages...my distances are fairly consistent now so it's probably time to find out exactly what they are.

Last night was the first time for me to use the Bushnell V3 on the course and it's going to be a game changer. I've been using GPS but exact within a yard numbers led to much closer shots. It's a different way to play. For example I was inside the 150 marker and hit the pin with the laser. Because it was back a bit the number was 155. With GPS it likely would have showed something in the 140-145 to middle of the green range. Ten yards is a club difference for me. Thinking 145 would have made me grab a 9 or maybe even PW depending where the hole was. I hit an 8 and my ball mark was about 5 feet short of where my ball rolled to flag high roughly 10 feet from the hole. That's a legit birdie opportunity compared to before I may have been faced with a much longer putt from a bad angle.

I really think it's going to help avoid trouble on par 3's. I don't get near enough pars on those. Just hitting random shots based on flag color and hoping it lands near the flag isn't working. Again was surprised to hit the flag with the V3 and get 177 yards to the flag on a 155 yard hole, tees back, flag back.

Yep, that's a huge discrepancy. That would be roughly 2 clubs difference for me. I imagine it will be REALLY beneficial on the courses you're less familiar with.

Yeah I figured out within a few holes I'd been approaching holes wrong, and that's on a course I play every week. Just hope I remember to bring the damn thing. When I forgot my GPS in the past I may as well not played. Course markers suck if you can find them at all besides the usual blue, white and red.

Yeah, all my course has is blue, white and red and considering that some of the tee boxes have about 18 yards of latitude for where they place the actual tee markers...well...

I'm also looking at buying a rangefinder, and came across the Sureshot Laser Pin Loc 1000 for $199AUD. Does anyone have this model? Significantly cheaper than Bushnell etc.

The one that looks like a Pez dispenser with the engines from an x-wing glued on top? Seen them but haven't heard anything whatsoever about them.

Season starts next week so I'll probably go and get the Bushnell V3 since that's the best one. And yes @Ernest Jones my distances are pretty spot on but I'm not really a 5.6 anymore I'm down around a 4 now. haha

In my bag:

Taylormade R11S Driver
Taylormade RBZ 3-wood
Nike VRS Irons 4-9
SM4 Titleist Vokey Wedges 47, 54, 58
College freshman playing golf at Wabash College in Indiana!

Great choice.  You won't regret it.  -double check with your school though and see if they have a deal with Bushnell (probably not), but we had something with Callaway (which also makes a rangefinder)..  Might save you some money.

I did check and they actually do! I can get the V3 for something like 125 less than retail which is awesome.

Ha ha, think you may be thinking of something else.

Looks pretty generic?

This is the one I was thinking of:

Can you get 2? Hahaha.

That was my first thought! Haha! Bushnell is really good to my college in terms of equipment. I think it's gonna be $160 plus tax

Do any of you that are using these lasers wear glasses?  I wear glasses and the ones I have looked through don't seem to be all that great with glasses..    Are there adjustments possible??

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
