I've already started to create one in 2014. A friend that I went to school with. I talked about golf to the point where I thought he was either going to puke or ask to play round or learn how to play. Well, he decided that he wanted to go to the range with me. I lent him my old set for the day and we went to the range. He hit a couple shots pure and he was hooked. A week later he found a full set of Alien clubs (3-PW, 5 wood, 3 wood, driver, putter and stand bag for $80) on Kijiji and he bought them. He has yet to play a full round with me yet or a round by himself but I'm sure that's the next step after a few rounds at the range.

First day on the range went okay with my daughters bf.  He's a baseball player so he was constantly swinging for the fences and his head was moving around like a boxer in the ring with Mayweather.

He hit some decent shots when he didn't try to kill the ball.  He has a lot of natural athleticism so he's picking things up pretty quick.  I lent him disk 1 and 2 of 5SK and see when the weather will allow us to get our next session in.

This is a great idea and I am in.

My sticks:

Ping I15 irons

Ping G5 hybrid

Ping K15 3 wood

Ping G15 driver

Odyssey Whitice Sabertooth putter with extra large Winn grip

Done. I tried getting my buddy John into it last year, and it didn't go well. But I talked him into buying better clubs, and he's gonna give it another go this year. I will force his ass to golf with me weekly until he loves to hate it like the rest of us...

That and the fiancee...I will make her golf too, even though she hates it. :)

Two range sessions so far, a round booked for 5th April and he's decided to get several iron-replacement hybrids. Good start! :)

Im definitely in on this I have a target in mind and already got her the clubs. I just gotta get her out to the course.

I found a target. One of my friends hasn't played in 6 years. He's had some knee injuries and hasn't been able to do his regular sports. He's seen my obsession with golf and interested in starting to play again. It's still cold as heck out here. But as soon as it warms up, we'll get the course.

2nd range session this weekend.  Took video of him to show because he was convinced he wasn't moving his head during his backswing.  It's amazing how true the statement "feel isn't real" is, because he was shocked when he saw the video and his head was moving up and back every backswing.

I realize my limits so I'm only trying to "teach" him what is in the 5SK videos.  I told him that if he does some practice on his own and wants to learn more I'll pay for his first five lessons.

Very nice gesture! If you are able to film him, consider sending him lessons via evolvr.com and that way you can watch and help him apply his lessons, too.

Hands on is often quite important for newer players, though, and I'd actually go that route rather than evolvr if he's newer to the sport and there's a good local instructor.

I've told him about the site, he's stalking right now, maybe he'll sign up once he's more comfortable.  He's humbled by how difficult golf is for him, didn't realize his Happy Gilmore swings weren't really golf swings.  We're waiting for the local ranges to open during the week so he can get more practice in but I'm hoping given his natural athletic ability we'll hit a real course mid-summer if he sticks with it.

Took my friend to the range today. First time I have ever told him about golf. Got him to hit balls and make some putts and he took a lot of pictures. He loved it. Not sure if it will materialize but I'm happy about it!

I've been meaning to post here for a while (great thread). I've identified a target but am finding it incredibly hard to schedule a game / range session to kick it off. Time pressures on both sides. I'll continue to try but bambino 2 is coming along next month all going well. I may have to just pledge that I will remain a golfer :) if I fail this year, I'll consider next year as my Friday round and I'll have to go 2 under to make the cut ;) Good luck to all.

What should someone of my (relative lack of) ability do when they take someone to the range for the first time? I bring a few clubs from my starter set that I let them use, and kind of let them try a bit on their own before, if they aren't doing well, trying to show them how to do a half swing (which is how I first started making anything resembling contact way back when). It's probably better if I don't try to coach anyone through a full swing yet, but how exciting can I make half swings?

The first four words of S&T; - Weight forward, shoulder down. Shorter swings.

Make sure their stance and grip is "okay" too.

Excellent, thanks! I think I can handle that much.

    • Day 121: did a bit of mirror work with my driver. Working on shortening the backswing.
    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
