Easy. You say it so that they don't hear you, or say it in your head. And as I said before, camera time is not an excuse. Bradley and Dufner got plenty of camera time at the 2011 and 2013 PGA championship, but I didn't hear them swear once.

The people you've mentioned have sworn loudly enough that other people could hear them. Just because you haven't seen them do it on camera, doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

Fred Couples swore on camera at the Bob Hope (IIRC) one year. He dropped his ball, it settled down, and a guy nearby chuckled. Fred said "You think that's ****ing funny, do you?" Picked right up on camera.

These guys all swear a helluva lot more than you seem to want to believe.

@everyoneelse Maybe you should hear from Tom Watson.

Yes, let's listen to the guy who cheated on his wife with a fellow PGA Tour player's wife (and then divorced his wife so he could marry her). Plus, Tom Watson swears too.

Guess what @tmac20 : Neither spitting nor swearing bothers me in the least. And that doesn't make me better or worse than you. It's just how I feel about it.

Is tmac not allowed to have the opinion that he does not like Tiger swearing in front of kids and on live TV??

Criticism does not equal censorship. Of course tmac is welcome to his opinion; nobody said he wasn't. I repeat: criticism of his opinions does not ran anyone wants him to stop giving them.

Pros can swear all they want, just Don't do it when they are within earshot of kids watching on the sidelines.

And spit in the fairways, if they must.

When Tiger swears, how often is he near kids? Not too often from what I can tell. Alone on the 18th tee at Pebble. In the middle of the fairway at the British Open. And those mice can pick up a lot of sound… including a fart with David Feherty nearby.

They don't put microphones on the line of scrimmage for a reason. If you detest hearing swearing during TV coverage… here's a thought: blame the TV coverage. They should know better by now. Cuz guess what: athletes tend to swear.

What makes your morals the right ones?

So you think it's fine to swear loudly in front of strangers (including young children) and spit? Good morals.

Well, I have yet to hear it. And look at the Tom Watson video I posted - it's obvious that Watson thinks Woods has a problem with his profanity.

Have no idea, never been to a golf tourney. All I can assume is from the TV coverage.

Let me ask this, is swearing really necessary..?  It doesn't fix a bad shot, won't help you swing better, so what's the point..?

Cool it a bit, dude. I can't say exactly where the line is, but you're approaching it if not over it slightly already.

My kid can watch a movie with swearing in it. She knows the rules and expectations we have for her. I don't think that's a "morals" question at all.

Did you read what I wrote, or are you just skimming and sticking to your guns no matter what? Sorry, but Tom Watson is one of the last guys that gets to preach about how a man should behave.

Straw man. The point is that the vast majority of people on the Tour swear. And yes, I think it is necessary and/or helpful sometimes.

What if now that I know you are an atheist, I think that there is no way you can ever be a law abiding citizen or a good person?

FWIW I don't agree with any professional athlete (or anyone) swearing in front of impressionable children. JMHO I still find golf more interesting when Tiger is playing and even more so when he is playing well. Therefore I root for him to win.

Spitting and cursing in front of children is so tiny that it barely registers as an event. Like, how many times do you think parents curse and spit in front of their kids? Who gives a flying shitball what Tom Watson has to say? Why should we regard him as a source of morals and wisdom?

You seriously think what adults do around kids is "Tiny"..?  Kids mimic adults, i.e. if it's o.k. for Dad to swear, then it must be o.k. for me. Just for the record, My Son is 40, and I or my wife have never cursed in front of him, even to this day, and no, I'm no angle, but I have enough sense to know when and where to do, or say things.

First of all, that's not what I said. What parents do around their kids of course matters but to think that cursing or spitting actually matters is ludicrous. My parents rarely cursed around me and I curse just as much as the next person. "Bad" language and spitting are not indicators of a bad person. And trust me, I get it; I understand why people don't want their kids to curse or spit. But that is not a pro golfers problem, nor is it an issue that really matters. Plenty of men and women curse and are good and plenty of men and women who don't are bad.

It doesn't work that way, sorry. My kid knows that I can swear and she cannot. It's not exactly a tough lesson. She knows how she's expected to behave. She's got an IQ north of 40, so I think she can comprehend that rules are different. Adults can swear. She cannot. It's not rocket science.

That's your opinion, and please don't act like it's the superior position or that anyone who swears "lacks sense" or something.

Sometimes I swear, as most guys do. I swear less than most guys, but most guys swear.

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Stephen_Fry:
Swearing is a really important part of one's life. It would be impossible to imagine going through life without swearing and without enjoying swearing… There used to be mad, silly, prissy people who used to say swearing was a sign of a poor vocabulary - such utter nonsense. The people I know who swear the most tend to have the widest vocabularies and the kind of person who says swearing is a sign of a poor vocabulary usually have a pretty poor vocabulary themselves… The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education or a lack of verbal interest or - is just a ****ing lunatic… I haven't met anybody who's truly shocked at swearing, really, they're only shocked on behalf of other people. Well, you know, that's preposterous… or they say 'it's not necessary'. As if that should stop one doing it! It's not necessary to have coloured socks, it's not necessary for this cushion to be here, but is anyone going to write in and say 'I was shocked to see that cushion there, it really wasn't necessary'? No, things not being necessary is what makes life interesting - the little extras in life.

Tom Watson was also known for having an affair on his wife. It was discussed in Kansas City, where he resides for a time but no one made a deal of it. Sure you were. You have "enough sense"… and so everyone else does not.

But as with swearing, I choose not to be offended. You typed it, and I can give you the benefit of the doubt. But that's what you wrote.

Happy to move on if you are.

@iacas I read your post, but I immediately disregarded your Fred Couples example because that must have been in the 90's. Find a more recent example. You have your opinion, I have mine. No reason to ban me over conflicting opinions. My parents didn't like it when people swore around me as a young child. That's probably why I get mad when Tiger Woods or anyone else swears in front of a child. In my opinion, it's rude and selfish.

The fact is, you hear Tiger swearing and see him spitting more than other players. Does that have to do with the fact that the camera is on him more? In my opinion, no. Some of you think otherwise. Last year at Bay Hill, the commentators were unimpressed with Tiger's use of language.

Bottom line, in my opinion , I think Tiger is arrogant and a bit of a pig, which is why I don't like like him as a person . As a golfer, I appreciate what he does for the game of golf.

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
