Probably is. Quebec is the highest taxed province in the country and they are pretty creative/innovative in finding ways to grow their business. We also get taxed on our taxes, they accomplish this by calculating provincial sales tax on the total after the federal sales tax has been applied. LOL.

When you get your bill in a restaurant it's almost like there is someone else sitting at the table with you!

It all evens out. We pay lower taxes in Alberta, but nothing is "free". Housing is overpriced, it's ~ $1000 per month for a 1/2 decent daycare, and you might have to wait > 9 hours in the emergency ward to see a physician.

What this means is that if you are not tipping someone who work's in the hospitality business you're not just putting less money in their pockets, you're actually taking money out of their pockets as they will be taxed on the hypothetical tip that you did not give them. Of course crappy service deserves whatever it gets.

Same thing here. You're supposed to report tip income.

Actually I see the guys that unload our cars make more money than the cart girls - mind you the guys that load our clubs get minimum wage and only load up clubs for about 2-3 hours on a weekend morning, while the cart girl is our there for 8 hours making servers salary and 3/4 of the people golfing buy nothing (the club definitely looks the other way on the issue of people bringing their own alcohol.) I'll tip the cart guys $3 and the cart girl makes considerably more off of me - but she will always start on whichever 9 I am starting on (probably because I am the only guy buying at 8am) and will always let me know when she is going in so I know if I need to buy some extra. It's the same thing in the clubhouse - I always tip and receive excellent service, the ones that dont tip are always the first to complain.

There can be arguments made that the course should just pay the cart girls/servers a higher wage, but every golfer will pay a higher rate if that is the case, which will just scare off potential customers. Kind of like our government and all the hidden *user fees.*

Those on server wages in the states are taxed on their sales (perceived tips) - so not tipping them drops their $4/hour wage even further. Those that give bad service rarely last anyway. I cringe when I hear the GM say *if i need to pay someone $4/hour to fill ice for people all day, I will* - they wonder why they can never fill that Monday slot - the clubhouse is closed and the retirees will never buy a drink at the course (nor tip for the ice.) They do all chip in and give a $10 gift card to all the cart girls at the end of the year. (which works out to about 20 cents a week divided by 30-40 guys)

I play almost all my golf at just two clubs and my rules of thumb for dealing with the staffs there are: Always be polite, remember people's names and tip well. Seems to work -- I generally get the coldest beers out of the back of the cooler and nobody has yet called me a douche to my face, which I appreciate.

I tend to see young people tipping the most. Probably because they're most likely to be (or have recently been) in the service industry. People in my generation appreciate paying people for their work but don't feel the need to pay people more than they're worth at our own expense when not making any purchase at all is also a viable option. Old people are just cheap and cranky. ( ps - I'm basing all this on my father's changing tipping habits during my lifetime).

Don't forget that some businesses rip off the tips that we give for service.  One country club I know makes all the tipped workers put the money in a kitty and it is divided equally to all the employees.  Another restaurant I have friends who work there, take the wait staff's tips and divide it with the cooks, bus boys, hostesses etc.  And the tipped staff don't get to see the total counted before it is passed out.

No U R not my friend.I am sorry but your friend is.

Whats that old saying Pay Back is a BITCH.

Dont get me wrong but these girls dont have a pot to piss on or they would not

be working for Peanuts and have to deal with Snobby golfers.

What I do B4 a round is I find the girls that will be working on the

course and I take care of them right away.

Now if a friend is buying the drinks I know the tip is covered what ever he gives her.

I did a small survey last year on two courses and asked the workers how they

get tipped and they looked at me with a look of Disgust.

So I guess it is not just our friend their is a whole bunch of them.

(I guess we are the few that look out for these girls)

I consider myself a good tipper and I never thought to tip the beer cart girl.  For some reason, none of the courses I play have them, anyway.  I have only ever seen a beer cart girl once - it was at a corporate event and I didn't know enough that I should tip her.  whoops.  Thanks to this thread, though, I will definitely tip the cart girl . .if I ever see one again.

Unless I get bad service, I always tip 20% in restaurants..........

With that said...on to the cart girls....

I'm not a golf drinker.... I carry my own water bottle 99% of the time and keep it filled at the water-coolers.   I rarely buy something from the cart-girl, but when I do it's a Gatorade......  I just tell her to keep the change.  That's just how it is....

I usually don't buy anything from the beer kart girl but when I do I tip her. In the OP situation he was cheap on the tip but maybe he assumed that 2 waters wouldn't be so much.

Being a beer kart girl isn't difficult and they get paid minimum plus tips here. After talking with a friend who has been in charge of beverage service at 3 courses for the last 4 years the girls end up making about $25-30/hour to drive around on a kart and hand out beer on a sunny summer day while working on their tans.  They make roughly the same amount per hour that most journeyman trades people makes per hour. Based on an hourly rate they make more then policemen and firemen as well. Just saying.

To be honest if you cut out the perverts that think that because they tipped big that the girl is interested instead of the cheap tippers I bet their jobs would be easier.

I am Sorry but you are way off.We are not talking about 15 dollars and leave 7.50.

We are talking about 1dollar and if you have to figure out the % then maybe you

should be working at the course cause it seems you need it more than they do.

I will not buy from the cart girl/guy because of the inflated prices AND the expectation of a tip.  I think it is the tip portion that bothers me more than the inflated prices.

Also, I'm not going to pay $75 or more to play a round of golf.  It is just not worth it.  I could take my wife and kids out for the night with that much money.  I'll draw the line at $50 and still feel that that is a bit on the steep side.

The problem with this reasoning is that when you take certain jobs you know the base pay is low but you will get tips.  Except from guys like you.

But then again, what the hell do I know?
