What do y'all think of this theory: CONTENDING in a major is a good thing for Spieth at age 20. WINNING a major at age 20 could be bad for his long-term career.

It could be yea. He does seem like the most stable famous 20 year old I've seen in a while though. If anyone can handle it, he looks like a good candidate for it.

But it could be a really, really bad thing for any 20 year old in this modern era.

I don't think it'd be bad for him to win. Success breeds success, so I can't imagine it won't help.

I don't think it'd be bad for him to win. Success breeds success, so I can't imagine it won't help.

The other side of the theory goes that early success can be bad overall. Lots of flashes in the pan. Duval, for example. He talks about how once he won a major he just fell apart, basically. Lost will, motivation. Said yes to too many people. Etc.

My theory is the fewer "mental demons" the better. Losing doesn't necessarily build demons but losing the wrong way can.

BTW. Just holes a bunker shot!

      Played Musgrove Mill GC today. 72.3/155. First round in 4 weeks and shot 44-39. 2 triple bogies on the front and horseshoed 4 putts today. Overall, 10 fairways, 8 GIR and 31 putts.  Set a goal today to par the 3 toughest holes (4, 18 and 9) and birdie 10 or 12 (which I have never birdied). Parred 4, 9 and birdied 10. Crushed my drive on 18 and had 139 left, but in casual water. Dropped back a little ways and took an extra club. Hit my 8-iron well but it came up short. Bunker shot from wet sand left me an 18’ for my goal. Read the break well but perhaps an inch too much break, and a touch heavy on the speed. Ball circled the hole 270* and tapped in for a bogey. Handicap dropped 0.1.
