At 6' 4" I also lost a bunch of weight, about 50 lbs ( 248 down to about 195) @ 195 I felt skinny and at times weak. I found there was a complete adjustment to my swing, it went south and was unpredictable, not really terrible but dispersion was much wider. Missing a few fairways than usual and a bit further away from the pin on par threes However there is hope, eventually you find it again. in my case my weight came back to 210-15 and I played much better. BTW that's great news on your weight change, and life style change. When I lost my weight I often had. People I knew would pull me aside, some would ask if I was Sick or had cancer. I took it as a compliment, their intentions were right.

Yeah, I get a lot of sick or cancer questions. I have a lesson tonight and I am hoping he gets me back on track.

I'll add my congrats on the weight drop as well. I'm currently just trying to shave off about 25 more to get to my fighting weight of 185-190. About the power dropping off- I would guess (after seeing quite a few of the 'larger' golfers out there over the years) that your original swing was probably pretty flat trying to get around the mass of your body. Now that the mass is lower and subsequently, the volume is lower, your swing plane is getting more upright and its harder to control. Leading to weak contact and fades or slices. building your strength back up- core, legs and arms will certainly help. But grooving a new swing plane is probably what the instructor will be working on. you will find a slot that is comfortable and easy to repeat. It might not click right away, but practice and playing should build a repeatable swing eventually. you will be able to use your core and legs more and the distance will return. I play with a friend of mine who is of a 'larger' volume (so to speak) and he has the opposite problem. He still swings with a much too upright swing that he had when he was 20 (30 years ago). With his size he cant get the clubhead high enough to create any clubhead speed and comes over the top and it's almost always a weak slice to 175-200. I've tried to get him to swing "AROUND not UP" to use his mass to his advantage, but he doesn't stick with it on the course. Good luck, and congrats again...

Impressive.  Before and after pics are amazing!

Just wondering, what did it?  Obviously it's a mental shift that's really personal, but I mean practically.  Specific diet, calorie counting, just a sort of general no junk food, more veggies?  Stomach surgery (one of my uncles had it maybe 18 months ago now and made a transformation similar to yours, and he's now an obsessive runner)?  You say you're running a 5k and aiming for a half-marathon.  Was running the main exercise?  Did a particular exercise routine help, both for weight loss and maintaining mental outlook/focus?  Feel free to ignore if it's too personal.  I'm just interested cause it's such an impressive transformation and I wonder what enabled you to go all in like that and stick with what I imagine was a fairly long process and tough permanent life change.

No personal experience to share in the big weight change, but I'm a tall guy (tad shy of 6'3") and I'm relatively flexible and definitely have flexible shoulders.  I can definitely see how dropping that much weight and volume would get you out of positions you were relying on your volume and lack of flexibility to ensure you stayed in.  I'm still learning how to use better mechanics to slot myself in the right positions.  It's easy to slide out of good positions if you're at all flexible and don't have good habits ingrained.  Good luck with the lessons!

I don't now about that.  That girl there looks like she might have Dad wrapped around her finger.

She is my hunting buddy. She has hunted musk rats, helped clean ducks, geese and pheasants. She can scout deer and has her first bow...... But yup, I am wrapped around her finger. :-D

We moved to Pa from North Dakota...... It is just a way of life up there. Nothing better than a 4 year old girl pulling a nice Northern Pike out of the ice or letting me know what bucks are shooters and what ones should be passed up on.

North Dakota??  Were you running away from the oil boom?

I am from the other side of the state but the oil boom has been great for the state. I am in corporate security and unfortunately cows don't steal so there is not much in that field up there.

Gratz on the weight loss. Im in the same phase myself. About 50 lbs weight remains of my goal. I should reach it by january 2015. My advice is for you is to incorporate a gym routine. Im doing 4h gym per week plus my aerobic exercises which add up to 5h per wweek thusfar.

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
