Just read the answer and was surprised never thought about the hole like that. Guess that's why my handicap is so high :D Will be purchasing a copy of the book for sure. Should do more of these threads for different holes fun and interactive.

A few of us have posted similar using holes at our home courses. Post one of your own. I agree these type of threads are informative and entertaining.

I always like these posts, but because I only login every once in a while, I always get to pick an answer after the "right" answer has been revealed. Kind of a bummer. Was wondering - would it be acceptable for forum members to take pictures from several angles of their favorite hole on a local course they play often and submit it for analysis just like you guys do? I've got one in mind already...

Edit - BTW, I'd honestly pick driver myself, but now it seems clear why that makes sense. Why would you hit for less distance and risk putting it into a hazard vs. more distance and take the hazards out of play? I'd rather be hitting out of a bunker from 30 yards away for my second shot than from a crummy-looking hazard 75 yards away.

I have done it in the passed on a few of the more tricky holes for me at my local course, always enjoy it but don't like to spam forums to much.

It's not spamming. People like them.

Well when you're assuming your drive is going to be in the hazard then of course it sounds stupid to approach the hole that way.  I think this argument has been used several times already I this thread and I find it a little funny, folks are basically picking what they would do and then throwing the worst case scenario out there in order to justify it.  Anyway, how many people on here aren't perfectly capable of shanking it into one of those hazards with a driver anyway.

That's not what it says. It says you are playing the tees that would put the ball in the areas specified. [rule] I updated the OP with a link to the "answer."

I also forgot to mention that I usually play longer than I should....jk So ill say hybrid then

Driver: Callaway Mavrik 10*

Wood: Callaway Epic Flash 17*

Hybrid: Callaway Mavrik 20*

Irons: Callaway Rogue X 5i-GW

Wedges: Vokey SM8 54*S and 58*K

Putter: Ping Prime Tyne 4

The simple fact is you're less likely to hit it into the hazard with a driver while also getting closer to the green than you are with a 3W.

Both reduce your average score.

I'm upset I didn't see this thread until now.

Being that I am a conservative player (even though I can hit the ball long), I don't think I would even hit as much as a 5i.  I hit my 6i 185+ so, being that the hole is 320 from the back tee, I play the 6i to that nice fat part of the fairway before all the hazards, have 135-130 left which is a nice uphill PW to the middle of the green, two putt and RUN away with a Par happy that I didn't get suckered into the design of the hole.

I would consider driver also BUT, my miss is a straight pull and if I'm at that point of the round having a difficult day with the driver, I don't want to miss long and left on this hole as Par from that position would be a very low %.

I am confident in saying I have a 80% chance (maybe more) of putting the ball in the fairway with my 6i.  EVEN IF I miss hit the 6i (say I hit it a little fat and am left with 150-160), that's still only a full 9i which still gives me a high % for the GIR.

I think the gist of the solution is to hit is as close to the green as possible in most situations unless the hazards near the green are most penal than the fairway hazards.

Yes, that is correct.

But as I said, in the case of this specific hole for my game, if I was feeling it with the driver that day, Option A would be yanking the driver out of the bag and blasting it into the front right bunker.  However, if I'm having a bad driver day, or not really feeling it (for whatever reason) I would resort to Option B...6i off of the tee.

Option A gets me as close at possible.  Option B puts me in a position that is nowhere close to the hazards with a very manageable PW shot into the green.  Both Options are the highest percentage for me making Par.  Again, in the case of this "specific hole," I would rather have the 135 yard PW shot than the awkward 30 yard, severely below the green pitch shot from the rough on the left side of the green (I mentioned that my driver miss was a straight pull).

Who said I assumed it'd be in the hazard? Throwing the worst case scenario out there is called course management. If you want to use the best case scenario, then with hybrid you are 90 yards from the hole in the fairway and with driver you are 30 yards from the hole in the fairway. Where would you rather be? The chances of putting it in the hazard with a 3W or hybrid are greater than with a driver here. Hence, driver...

Really??

How many times do you miss the green from 135?  Keep in mind this green is very shallow.

How many times do you miss the green from 30?

I have a feeling he doesn't miss the green from 135 that often, but I'd prefer even an awkward pitch from 30 yards over a full PW shot. Then again, I'm uber-confident with my short game.

Yeah I'm actually fairly good at almost any kind of short game shot (even "tough" ones). From 135...Well, not so much.

You make it seem like it's a flat, clean lie, 30 yard pitch shot?  Didn't you see the pictures Erik posted?

As I said, I miss my driver left.  So if I hit it left on this hole with the driver, I'm in the hazard if the drive is short or in the rough on the left way below the green if it carries the hazard which brings a variety of things to play.  The ball can be sitting down in the rough and the green, I would guess in that spot, is at least 6-10 feet above you.  It isn't a "simple 30 yard pitch" onto the green.  As you say, the green is shallow so that pitch out of the rough more than likely won't hold the green anyway unless it's a PGA Tour quality flop of some sort.  Not my strength so I'll take the right green side bunker shot as Option A (much easier to hold the green with the bunker shot, more spin, etc) or Option B, the 135 yard shot.  But that's my game...others may choose to play it differently than me.

I did not try to make it seem like a flat, clean lie.  I also did not intend to come off snarky.

I consider myself a below average sand player, and slightly above average short game player.  Even yet, I would bet I hit the green at least double the time from the 30 yard sandy or crappy lie vs. 135 in the fairway.

    • Day 20: Did 30 minutes after getting home from work, before kid's baseball practice. This session was piecing out the new hip move in transition, doing 2-3 rehearsals from the top, and then hitting a ball from between P5/P6. Did another 45 minutes after baseball practice and dinner. Did 30 more minutes of what I did earlier, and then about 15 minutes of full swings trying to incorporate athletically.
    • Day 296: did a stack session.
    • Day 126: 5/1/24 Putting and chipping practice. Slow motion swings with 8-iron.
    • #4 - 1st hole at Kingsbarns I rolled in a 15 footer for birdie. Showed my caddie an old guy could still play a bit. #3 - 18th hole at Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT. I had played matches against my nephew over the years. He had never beaten me although through the years he had become a long hitting teenage golfer. I was 1 up but bunkered near the 18th green. My nephew had a long putt for birdie. I splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet. He rolled his first putt close and I gave him the par. Sadly for him, I rolled mine in and won our last match. He went off to college and then Europe for a Ph. D. It was our last match. Family champion forever. #2 - First playoff hole in the City of Livonia, MI “65 & Over” division. I rolled in an 8 footer that broke about 4-5 inches. #10 Whispering Willows GC. #1  18th hole at TPC Prestancia, Sarasota, FL. A 4 foot slicing putt for par to beat the prior year’s Member/Guest winners and win the Member/Guest with my father at his club. I was having heart palpitations as I played the final hole solo when my father put two in the water. There was never a better golf sight for me when that ball dove into the hole.
    • Finally, wedges getting somewhere. This one a punch gap from 87 yards to about 12 feet. Contact and ball flight absolute restaurant quality. It's nice when grass comes back.
