How are the knees when you do this stuff?

Specifically (obviously) the left knee?

I’m having trouble getting it to really push back my left hip. I can do it slow, but as I increase speed, l lose the feel.

I meant pain or whatever-wise.

No pain when bent or starting to straighten, but it gets wobbly when I fully straighten it with all my weight on it. So when snapping it straight it kind of gets weak. I think it has to do with the torn meniscus. I can do squats because it doesn’t affect that area, so the leg is strong, but not when straight.

I got an adjustment to my drill from Erik. I need to really move my hands down faster from the top, which will then require me to rotate faster to get to impact. I also need to get my left hip back farther, which has been a challenge.

I broke out the Butt Board 2000 to try and help the feel. It helps a bit.

Drill. I’m trying to feel the left butt cheek go back and have a fast arm motion down.

Swing with the BB 2000. A bit of improvement but I need to exaggerate more.

Full swing sans BB 2000. Still a little EE. Work in progress.

Shove your left butt cheek behind your heel. There’s enough force pulling you toward the ball that you can pull back the other way to offset it.

A swing from yesterday working on the same pieces with more emphasis on pushing the left hip back more aggressively.

I’m still in PT at the moment and working hard to get back. I’ll give PT a couple more weeks before deciding to get a shot (which may or may not work).

Good luck with everything, its tough getting old!  Just my experience, the epidural steroid injection I got has made a world of difference as far as the pain goes.  I have a feeling that the PT exercises will need to continue forever, but that's a pretty small price to pay if they help me avoid future episodes.

I started doing slow swings again. I’ve had a rough year since last June. Hurt my left SI joint and took the better part of 9 months rehabbing it. Then I got a repeat hernia last December. I had repair surgery 4 weeks ago and now can start with slow swings. I’ve only played three times since the outing last June and only the last one without any back pain as the back finally has healed. I have to take it slow with the hernia because the golf swing can put a lot of stress on that area. I am able to work out again too since the surgery, which helps.

Started Monday with just backswing work with 6 iron and driver. Today, more of the same with some slow chippy swing with 6 iron and driver. Focus of the practice is from my last GEARS session.

Setup: Feel like I’m on my toes almost falling toward the ball. Arms hand down vertically and feel like I’m almost too close to the ball.

Backswing: The idea is to keep my hip center from moving toward the ball. I need to feel like I’m swaying back a bit on the takeaway, but in reality, push my right hip back toward the wall 45 degrees behind me to P3. From P3-4, start moving toward the target.

Downswing: Hands feel like they start dropping straight down from the top. Left leg pushes the left hip back and up.

Did backswing feels first then slow 25% swings. About 10 balls each with rehearsal feels. It will be a fews week before I can really do full swings, but this practice may help reset things and remove old bad habits. I’ll try to film when I have a chance.

Glad to hear you're sufficiently mended to start swinging again! As Bette Davis said "getting old is not for sissies". I

I'll check in with you via PM or text in a few weeks and hopefully we can get out at NKGC this year!

Not that you need to hear it from me, but take it slow. I’m sure you’ll be back out on the course in no time.

I actually found that the silver lining when being injured is that I was able to prioritize working on the setup stuff without being distracted by making actual swings. I spent two weeks last month doing nothing but focusing on that because I really do anything else and I think it’s starting to pay dividends.

Its good to hear you're back to swinging, and more important that you're feeling healthy enough to do it.  As Bill says, take it gently, push just a little, I'm sure you'll be back to speed soon.

Went to the range yesterday and did some full swings. I didn’t feel any pain or tightness in the surgery area and wasn’t sore this morning. I should be able to start playing now.

    • Its going to be a busy few months for me.  In just a couple of weeks I'll be joining the SandTrap group near Pittsburgh for 2 rounds.  Then in August we'll be in Nova Scotia for a week, including both Cabot courses.  And now we've added another little holiday.  Following my niece's wedding west of Detroit, my wife and I will go up to Forest Dunes for 3 rounds.  I picked that spot because I'm intrigued by The Loop, a Doak design that is played in different directions on alternating days.  One day is the Red, playing counter-clockwise, the next days is the black, going clockwise.  And there's the original course, a Weiskopf design.  All told, 10 new courses to add to my list!
