I also HATE celebrations in the NFL. I make exceptions for a long-time player who scores his first-ever touchdown or something like that, but most of the time I feel like screaming at the TV "Stop celebrating for DOING YOUR GODDAMN JOB!"

When I score in rec soccer or hockey, I just walk or skate back to center (or sub out). I don't even fist pump. It's the whole "act like you've been there before" type thing. Hell, I scored the OT game winning goal in our rec hockey league (shorthanded) and just turned to skate back to the team, give them some handshakes/glove bumps, and shake hands with the other team. I acted like it was an empty-net goal in a 12-2 game. (So, I may be a bit too extreme the other way…)

Come on, man!  You can "act like you've been there before" and still be happy to have done it again.  If you can't get excited a little bit, why do it at all?  After all, we do these crazy things for fun don't we?  I do think there is some sort of "grading" system to celebrations however.  For example, in golf, I rarely "celebrate" when I hit a fairway, but often do when I hit a close approach, make a putt, or hit a long drive.  It depends on the circumstance.  I have no problem with pros celebrating, within similar guidelines as you had.  They have a dream job and love it!

On a original related note, I'm killing it in fantasy football.  11-3, plus won 1st round of playoffs.  I'm looking good to take it all as well :)

I think it's cooler to act like you've not only been there before, but you expect to be there several more times in the near future as well. Plus, I can personally be very excited inwardly without necessarily having to dance around or look like an idiot outwardly.

Whether you celebrate something or not outwardly doesn't mean you have or haven't been there before.  Certainly the more you do something, the more common and less "excited" I suppose a person would be.  But people are different.  If someone scores a TD, dunks on someone, or makes a putt and they get excited- good for them.  Chances are, I would be celebrating with them!  Enjoy the moment.  Dancing around doesn't make someone look like an idiot.  They're having fun man!  As long as it doesn't slow down the game or denigrate/disrespect someone else, I don't really see how someone can be called out for having fun...  Besides, that's what fans are paying for.  To see a good game and be ENTERTAINED.

Okay. You have your opinion, and I have mine.

For example, I'm entertained by the play , not the stupid idiotic dancing .

There's clearly a fine line even in my opinions seeing as how I've said I like Tiger's reactions on the golf course and hate the robotics, but that's more (again IMO) because golf itself is not terribly exciting. There aren't big hits, big runs, etc. Football, for example, has that already, so stupid celebrations push it over the top in my eyes.

You sure about that???

I could keep going, but I think you get the point. :-P

The guys that hustle back to the huddle, hand the ball to the ref, or just realize that they have a job to do will NEVER have any of the above happen to them.

On top of this ... when guys are celebrating touchdowns or sacks while their team is losing always look like idiots as well.

We talked in a messaging thread about this and I think golfers do this more often. In soccer and hockey I'll compliment the other team on plays they make.

I also wonder if it's a little survivalist. If you're nice to people, they may not try to hit you as hard or punish you versus a QB who whines about being touched and talks smack.

I was very lucky as a coach because the parents of my kids would clap any great play on the field, especially good saves by the keeper.  This kept the parents on both sides calm, which in turn calmed the whole game down.  It was great because the kids could just play.

When my boys got older, they would get all upset about trash talk, sometimes almost wanting to fight.  That is where the real coaching came in. We let them know that they were too good a player and too good a young man to let it bother them.  At that level, poor players talk, good players play.

True, it can be overkill.  I'm not saying that at all.  I also agree that if you're behind and you celebrate, you do look a little ridiculous.  However, sometimes that good play and little "swag" if you will, may be the spark you or your team needs to get back in the game.  If nothing else, doing a little bit of celebrating (without forgetting to get back on D and all that) can help.  My only point is, it's ridiculous to criticize a guy for having fun.  Is it really that necessary to get all bent out of shape (calling them idiots and using profanity to get your point across) over a guy having a bit of fun?  I just know when I play sports (I play basketball, football, and golf regularly-Played varsity ball in these sports back in the day), we trash talk, celebrate, and just have fun.  We're all good buds and it's all in the spirit of fun.  Sounds like some people just get overwound over the simplest things.  I guess I don't notice as much, because I'm too busy enjoying the game or talking about it with my friends as we watch the play to notice the celebrations.

A more recent incident, luckily a veteran player calls a time out.

It is when the celebration costs a team a victory or a big play. First and foremost the player has to do their job, which means doing their assignment in the play. For a key player like a RB or a WR that means get the ball over the goal line first then celebrate. If you get a sack, be aware of the downs and get back on defense.

If I was an OC I would have a quick call to the QB after every sack and rush the offense to the line. First most of the defense is pumped up and their minds are not on the play at hand. Second, you can possible get the incident that almost happened in the link I posted.

In the end, make sure to get the job done and make sure you are ready for the next play. Besides that, celebrating is fine.

Are you playing so you keep a multi-million dollar contract? Are you playing to win a superbowl? If I was a team mate of a player who drops the ball before the goalline because he wanted to celebrate, and that cost us the game. I would be going off, not saying, "Oh nice moves".

Agreed and agreed 100%.  Celebration doesn't come before performance.  You're actually saying what I'm (trying to) say.  Also, I would do the same thing in that situation.

I guess the NFL had to crackdown to keep it from getting out of hand, but the shame is that they have also killed originality. Love him or hate him, but TO with the Sharpie was pretty damn good. That, and this . . .

Him and the Ochocinco.

I personally love celebrations when done right.

This is my favorite one though:

Upon reading that URL, I just realized how funny it is that the Raiders have a player named "Tuck." :-D

Gonna go out on a limb and suggest that "funny" is probably not the word Oakland fans would use.
