when somebody ask's what you scored during your round, or even when you post your score to this site, do you answer with your gross or net score? am I robbing myself telling everybody I shot a 90? 69 sounds much better :)

You should definitely tell them the gross score, but feel free to follow it up with the net. ;-)

Gross is the correct score, although I did shoot a 66 the other day......net

BTW how many folks on here still do this? http://golf.about.com/cs/handicapping/a/coursehandicap.htm

Also if you are 10 what holes do you take 10 strokes off? http://golf.about.com/cs/handicapping/a/whichholes.htm

We adjust in my league, and then in stroke play you get strokes on the holes with the smallest handicap number. So if you're a 5 and the other guy is a 3 you'll get a stroke on the #1 and #2 handicap holes then play straight-up on the other holes.

I believe in you're example you'd take 1 stroke off holes with handicap #s 1-10.

It's always gross, net scores are only used for tournaments.

hijacking my own thread, can I decide what holes I want strokes on after the round? also so I understand if I'm a 20 hc and the guy I'm playing is a 1hc. that should be that I get 19 stokes? if so would it work for me to start the round 19 under vs the 1hc?

As to your first point, why wouldn't they?  Anyone maintaining a real handicap index is presumably doing it for a reason and for that reason to make sense they need to know the course handicap - which is simply a way of translating a "universal" handicap index to a course handicap that adjusts for the difficulty of the course.

As to the second point, the handicap holes really are only relevant in match play.

Say you are a 10 and you are playing against an 18 (in both cases using course handicap, NOT handicap indexes).  You will be giving him 8 shot.  If you were playing stroke (or medal) play then you would just compare final scores and if you were 9 or more less than him you win.  "Taking off" strokes on specific holes really does not matter, since it is the total score that counts.

But if you are playing match play there are 18 holes and you have to give him 8 strokes so it becomes necessary to determine on which holes the strokes should be given.  The scorecard should indicate what handicap number each hole is.  You will give your opponent one stroke on each of the handicap number holes 1-8.  I have heard people say that he should get a shot on 1-18 and you should get a shot on 1-10 (which effectively would mean you were giving him strokes on 11-18) but that is wrong.

Hmmm, as I reread your message, to which I am replying, I see I may be misreading it and you were not asking the questions you were offering the information.  If so sorry.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Always talk gross score. The holes you takes strokes for would only apply to match play. If the difference is 19, you get one on each hole and 2 on the toughest hole (handicap 1). For medal play, you subtract your handicap from your gross total.

Same as stroke.

Yep. The PGA Tour is medal play, except for a few match play tourneys. The PGA tournament used to be a match play tourney.

I used to focus on Stableford when I was at a higher handicap, but today it's all about the gross score.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
