I wonder if the new iPhone 6 will be useful for swing videos since it's coming with an option for 240 fps high speed video. Anyone have thoughts on the matter? For me, it makes an upgrade seem like a double bonus if I can also record high speed swing video with it.

It won't make me buy one, but I don't need a new phone anyway. 240 fps is cool and all, but you don't really need it. I feel I do well enough with my DSLR at 60 fps. The primary function of my cell phone's camera is to snap action shots of my kids, and the last iPhone I looked at had a significant enough delay from the time you clicked the button to the time it actually took the picture. Not sure if they addressed that or not.

The 5S is pretty darn good for swing videos. Only the 6 Plus has 240 fps. I need to look at the specs to see what other differences there are between the 6 and 6 Plus.

Edit: I was wrong, both 6 and 6 Plus have 240 fps:

The time to ready to take a photo on my 5S is pretty fast. Exponentially better than the 4 or 4S. That's not a problem anymore with any of the models 5 onwards.

I have a 4S.  It's funny because now that you guys mention this, I remember when I first got it, the speed with which it was able to take pictures was one of the things that impressed me.  Now, it's just aggravating.  I don't know if my patience has gone down or the phone is just slower because it's older.

The last two times we've got new phones, we've upgraded to something a bit older than latest and greatest (we got the 4s when the 5 came out, and before that the 3 when the 3s came out), but this time around I want to splurge and get one of the new ones.  5.5" seems awfully big, so I think I'm leaning away from the plus, and it's been suggested to me that 64gb is probably more than enough space, so I don't need to worry about 128 ... sooooo, currently talking myself into a 64gb 6 for $299. :)

My Casio only does 210fps, so if I can get something that does 240fps, and at a much better resolution, and is already in my pocket 24/7, that's a no-brainer. I plan on upgrading to the 6. I lost my tripod recently anyway (and the replacement I got is terrible), now I don't have to deal with the crappy one. If I can find something to hold the iPhone 6, that is. Only downside I can think of is that I like to listen to my iPhone while practicing on the range. Workarounds include: buying wireless headphones, re-enlisting my iPod Classic. FWIW, I've never had a problem with my iPhone 5 not being fast enough to take pictures. At all. Like, not even a little.

Any leads on this yet???

Only idea I've had so far is to hire someone full-time who can follow me to driving ranges and hold my iPhone to film my swings. Seems pricy though, and it just won't be as steady as a tripod. But I'll get back to you.

Can he really hold the iPhone with that wooden hand?

Not Chubbs ... that's his instructor.  I'm talking about the guy with the beard who took baths in the pond, washed his socks in the ball washer, and stole the other players ball markers. ;)

Ahhh right. Yeah, that's probably our best bet.

I still use my iPod nano for that. The kind that you can turn into a watch. :-)

That'd be pretty nice, I might be able to swing with that in my front left pocket. I always have to move my phone to a back pocket when I want to listen to music or else it just gets in my way it seems.

I have used this for a year or so.  $4.

It fits my 5" S4.  It would probably fit the 6 Plus, too.

I get 120 FPS right now and that's great.  I would LOVE to get 240, though.

Yeah I have that one. The cell phone holder on the top can come of and does screw into a camera tripod, which is what I will do. You can also get those holders separately. I have a lightweight aluminum tripod bought at Target that I prefer now.

    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
