One of our members requested we cover a specific chip shot in our virtual lessons that we just started. It's a shot I personally hate: a short chip shot with zero green to work with from the deep stuff.

Here is a short video with our head pro, Jason Gobleck...in short, play it like a sand shot:

Spam. Just pushing your YouTube videos.-Just stop-It wont end well for you. I propose a more organic approach.-Participate. Let people get to know you. Discuss some things without shoving your videos down our throats and let people see you as a smart guy or group or wahtever. Then-When the time is right-Share a timely video that is intended to help someone. This is just promotional spam.-No timeliness other than 'we need to send people to our YouTube channel.' Think before you act.-This site calls the forum a 'community' and it is a bit of one. Im the grumpy guy who has seen it all and who is tolerated because he knows whats what.-Plus I make a mean cup of joe.

This wasn't meant at all to be SPAM...I'm brand new here, and it appeared to me that I posted this in the correct place. I clicked on a few other topics specifically to watch a video lol. I'm not trying to hide what I posted...it's a 1:30 video of advice to hit a short chip from the deep rough. I apologize if I offended anybody, or it got interpreted as "SPAM". I thought this area was the place to post tips/video instruction?

It is the place. The better place is to do it in a timely fashion when it actually helps someone.-This just comes across as 'We Need to Promote our UTube Channel'. This site does not like people promoting themselves without giving back.-Its a selfish attitude.-I agree too. That video is nothing special. Why not make the lie tougher and have ball sit way down in deep grass? I like to see how it's done when it's tougher to utilize the bounce

It is, if you're a pro or instructor you should contact @iacas and register with the site as one.  We welcome everyone and want them to contribute throughout the site, not just post videos that would promote their business.

I don't particularly love this position: when the shaft gets this steep the golfer has to cut under the ball "artificially."

I'm also not sure why a standard chip shot wouldn't have worked well there. The ball only has to fly a few feet.

I think the question deserves an answer.... @WHGC1913 the ball looks like it is perfectly placed and a regular chip would get the ball off the grass and on its way.. I have seen Erik ie @iacas show us videos of pitching out of the deep stuff, and this is no deep stuff.. I agree with using the bounce, but I don't agree that this was a proper demenestration. Just out of curiosity, it looks like a classic bump and run chip shot. The rough is probably only 2-3 inches deep (as the top of the ball is clearly visible), and there's a lot more green than rough to work with. Why not just use a PW/9i and just bump it half a yard onto the green?

Or are you trying to simulate deeper rough?

EDIT: Didn't read @iacas comments. So, I agree that this video does not make it look like a tough shot. I even have a VLOG showing me chipping and subsequently putting for par out of deeper stuff on a two way lie.

Yeah I wouldn't say you have to have a tough shot to demonstrate a technique you would use on a tough shot, but it would surely be more realistic and convincing.

That's an easy enough shot that any number of techniques could work just fine.

He described the lie as downhill and did not discuss setup changes for a downhill lie from the rough that I usually hear such as "shoulders parallel to the hill" and another one I cannot remember ... lean a little forward?

Amen.

The grass is so thick at our course that if the ball was sitting down, and it was against the grain, that technique would never get the club to the ball.

Disclaimer: I will admit that not many courses I play have grass as thick as ours...but still...

That was one of my first shocks when golfing in FL.

TPC Tampa let that stuff grow boot height. A full swing 8i got my ball out about 20 yards from that stuff.

I know funny and that's funny. I've had to lay up from 50yds out of Florida rough before!

Nah just an unwillingness to make a double on a short par 4 ;-) Easier to make 4 from the fairway then the bunker

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
